Hotel mistake, wibu to tell them I'll correct it after Christmas?

Sanshin · 09/12/2017 09:40

Recently went to Vietnam on holiday. Stayed in a 3 star hotel for 3 days at a cost of £90. Lovely hotel, lovely staff.

Whilst there we booked a trip organised by the hotel at a cost of $100.

When we checked out they forgot to charge us for the trip and we never realised as we were rushing around so just settled the bill they presented to us.

A week later I receive a friend request on Facebook from a lady who worked at the hotel. I accepted and she sent a message saying that whilst we were at the hotel we booked a trip that they forgot to charge us for. She goes on to ask if we will now pay for it because if we don't, the staff have to pay for it themselves. It was very polite but almost pleading. I felt really guilty as I know $100 is a hell of a lot of money to these people so I replied straight away and said of course we will pay.

I spoke to DH on the night who wasn't happy because we will now how to pay a currency conversion fee but agreed we would pay. Then as we have been so busy since we got back we forgot.

So she sends another message asking if we can pay now and if we send her the card details we can pay like that. I meant to speak to DH about it again but he's working long hours at the minute and I keep meaning to mention it but when he's here I keep forgetting!

Anyway yesterday she sent another message. However now we can't really afford to pay it until after Christmas. We have £500 left to last us until after Christmas and that $100 will leave us skint. If they'd charged us at the time it wouldn't have been a problem!

As it was there mistake wibu to tell them I'll pay after Christmas?

Doesn't sound like a scam to me? Why are people saying scam? - fuckin hell. So you wouldn't think twice about sending your card details to someone who says she works in said hotel? This hotel who would have your email address or even real address?

Ok then, I work for Netflix - you watched a film the other night and forgot to pay. Please give me your card details (incl the security no) so I can bill you. Honest! Otherwise 'they' will dock my pay, and i need it right before Xmas...

Hmm
Bombardier25966 · 09/12/2017 11:42

I've not read the full thread, but am struggling to see why the OP has not already called the hotel and settled up? Five minute call and this could all be resolved.

Brandbrandbrandy · 09/12/2017 11:43

Yep. I agree with you Bombardier

NachoAddict · 09/12/2017 11:44

I would phone the hotel or contact them on the original email address you used when booking and pay the hotel directly.

Scam written all over this.

Bombardier25966 · 09/12/2017 11:45

You don't pay for films separately on Netflix. OP acknowledges they do owe this money.

You don't work for Netflix. OP knows for a fact that this lady does work at the hotel.

Netflix would not dock someone's pay for an error. A hotel in Vietnam more than likely would.

Pick up the phone ok. Stop the silly conspiracy theorists!

festivedinosaur · 09/12/2017 11:45

This totally sounds like a scam and I would be wanting to warn other travellers who go to this hotel

I also would not have accepted a friend invite from staff at a hotel in another country in the first place

It's worrying the amount of people who say you should pay straight away without any consideration or thought about this being a scam and shows why just so many people get scammed so easily and how we must be seen as easy targets in this world

myusernamewastaken · 09/12/2017 11:46

Really pisses me off when people use the 'im so busy....im always rushing around' excuse for not paying what they owe....ring the hotel now and pay it.....why wouldn't you?

Noofly · 09/12/2017 11:46

I agree with Bombardier as well. It would be so quick and easy to settle just by contacting the hotel directly yourself. And Sanshin seriously, if you are this close to the wire with money, you need to persuade your DP to get out of Bitcoin- some of that money should be paying this bill.

iBiscuit · 09/12/2017 11:47

OP knows for a fact that this lady does work at the hotel

Does she?

Roussette · 09/12/2017 11:49

Here you go OP.

www.globalwebpay.com/send-money-to-Vietnam.aspx?gclid=Cj0KCQiAsK7RBRDzARIsAM2pTZ8lLBRlJZr99QK5H0M7R-fLksOPmjpSFHCi178AasPXCv6H90KbEKcaAuZVEALw_wcB

It costs £1, just £1 to pay to another bank account in Vietnam. Competitive rates. It will arrive tomorrow latest. No excuse not to sort this immediately once you have details from the Hotel.

HuskyMcClusky · 09/12/2017 11:50

am struggling to see why the OP has not already called the hotel and settled up?

Because she doesn’t want to pay what she owes.

Otherwise, she could ring the hotel and say ‘Oops, so sorry, just going through our bank statements and realised we didn’t pay for the tour we took. Can we settle that now, please?’

No scam, nobody gets in trouble, and the hotel doesn’t even need to know the employee contacted her.

notangelinajolie · 09/12/2017 11:50

Would there be photos and comments of your trip to Vietnam all over Facebook by any chance? The thing I don't get is that you are more worried about being skint over Christmas tree than the glaringly obvious fact that you are being scammed.

MyrandaRoyce · 09/12/2017 11:51

This has probably been said a hundred times already, but contact the hotel directly and check how much you need to pay and arrange to pay securely (ask them if they can send an invoice via Paypal for example, then you won't need to pay a transfer fee). DO NOT send your card details to this woman!

whyhastherumgone · 09/12/2017 11:52

Do be careful OP, this happened to a friend of mine and it did turn out to be a scam. Her card details ended up being compromised and because she'd given her details freely over FB messenger she struggled with the bank to get the money back.

Is there another way you can contact the hotel to check this is legit?
If it is legit, then I agree you should pay sooner rather than later, you went on the trip and it is a very poor country, they shouldn't be out of pocket. Just be careful how you do it.

whyhastherumgone · 09/12/2017 11:53

Sorry, just realised I have reiterated what loads of people have said! Good luck OP.

HuskyMcClusky · 09/12/2017 11:53

festivedinosaur, yep, that’d be it: all those devious Vietnamese people sitting around waiting to scam poor unsuspecting Brits. Oo errr.

Have a look at yourself.

notangelinajolie · 09/12/2017 11:53
  • oops not tree Xmas Smile
Roussette · 09/12/2017 11:54

Personally I don't get that the OP is more worried about being skint over Christmas than paying what she owes. (In a safe way, see link above)

Hotels, meals, everything is so cheap over there, this will be a basic nice hotel, maybe family run, and it will matter to them that someone has buggered off without paying what they owe. Of course they were remiss in not adding it to the bill, but there is no way I wouldn't have noticed that and not got it added to the bill, because it's so cheap anyway and so noticeable that the tour isn't on the bill

youarenotkiddingme · 09/12/2017 11:55

I’d be very careful here.

The hotel should have your contact details and card details from when you booked.

I wouldn’t be sending card details to an employee.

ptumbi · 09/12/2017 11:59

Bombardier25966 - you might know all this. I know all this. But from the evidence of posters on this thread, many many people will just guiltily sent their cc details over the www without even thinking about it.

Obviously easily scammed.

Hotel should ^have contacted OP directly - not over FB. The 'employee' could be anyone.

MiddleClassProblem · 09/12/2017 12:00

I’d contact the hotel. She could still give you a fake invoice.

As you are well aware YABU not not pay for a service you have used and could afford at the time.

You might be worried that the mistake might cost her her job but it did happen and it would be worse to get scammed. They could still process it through hotel channels correctly to rectify it rather than on Facebook.

CorbynsBumFlannel · 09/12/2017 12:00

No one is saying the op should give her card details over fb.
But arranging to pay the hotel directly and securely isn't a scam. She's had the trip and needs to pay for it! Why book it if she was so short of money? Also failing to see how the op missed the fact that a trip worth more than the entire bill had been missed off!

timeisnotaline · 09/12/2017 12:01

Of course you should pay it directly in a secure manner but shame on you for considering not paying it.

iBiscuit · 09/12/2017 12:01

The scammer might not even be in Vietnam - "she" could be anyone, anywhere.

It's easy enough to look at Facebook check ins to see who has been where. Message a few hundred people claiming they owe money, and eventually you'll get lucky (sooner rather than later, judging by this thread).

MiddleClassProblem · 09/12/2017 12:03

Yup could easily be a catfish
