Hotel mistake, wibu to tell them I'll correct it after Christmas?

Recently went to Vietnam on holiday. Stayed in a 3 star hotel for 3 days at a cost of £90. Lovely hotel, lovely staff.

Whilst there we booked a trip organised by the hotel at a cost of $100.

When we checked out they forgot to charge us for the trip and we never realised as we were rushing around so just settled the bill they presented to us.

A week later I receive a friend request on Facebook from a lady who worked at the hotel. I accepted and she sent a message saying that whilst we were at the hotel we booked a trip that they forgot to charge us for. She goes on to ask if we will now pay for it because if we don't, the staff have to pay for it themselves. It was very polite but almost pleading. I felt really guilty as I know $100 is a hell of a lot of money to these people so I replied straight away and said of course we will pay.

I spoke to DH on the night who wasn't happy because we will now how to pay a currency conversion fee but agreed we would pay. Then as we have been so busy since we got back we forgot.

So she sends another message asking if we can pay now and if we send her the card details we can pay like that. I meant to speak to DH about it again but he's working long hours at the minute and I keep meaning to mention it but when he's here I keep forgetting!

Anyway yesterday she sent another message. However now we can't really afford to pay it until after Christmas. We have £500 left to last us until after Christmas and that $100 will leave us skint. If they'd charged us at the time it wouldn't have been a problem!

As it was there mistake wibu to tell them I'll pay after Christmas?

So you could afford a trip to Vietnam but are complaining you’ll have only £500 left for the month? Boo frickin hoo. Pay what you’ve owed for months and stop behaving like an over-entitled brat. Obviously make sure you pay in a smart and safe way but come on, YABTU!!

Carrie80 · 10/12/2017 20:47

It was their mistake so yes pay after Christmas if you went to a shop and they did not charge you you would not be chased up and expected to pay

pisacake · 10/12/2017 20:52

yeah pay them after Christmas, because the worker on $100/month who hasn't been paid yet doesn't need the money as much as you.

or something.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/12/2017 20:53

I would pay, but only on an official hotel invoice and I would expect the hotel to cover the conversion fees.

pisacake · 10/12/2017 20:56

because credit cards are free if you use them in Vietnam?

northernshepherdess · 10/12/2017 20:59

possible scam.

Staff member "accidentally" doesnt charge for trip which will go unnoticed by the hotel.
Staff member fb the guest asking for payment because they will get in huge trouble and have to pay for it themselves.
Guest hands over card details, staff member hands over card details... account is emptied.

although there is an increase of travellers to vietnam most it seems dont want to go back and the most common reason is, being ripped off.
it appears that many Vietnamese see the western population as being rich and so don't have any issue with charging a traveller 3 times the price of a local etc. I know this goes on in places like thailand too as my friend was married to a Thai woman. They both openly admit it too :(

dudsville · 10/12/2017 21:01

If you'd paid before the you'd still be $100 out of pocket, if you pay now then you'll just be as you would have been had you paid on time. And you would have coped somehow presumably because you opted to take the trip. So is suggest you pay, through a proper channel.

MarklahMarklah · 10/12/2017 21:01

Yes, OP should pay what she owes, but she should pay in such a way that she is assured the money owed goes to the hotel directly.

Christmas being imminent, the amount owing and any other factors are irrelevant.

CharlieSierra · 10/12/2017 21:05

Well yes the hotel fucked up the bill. But they've tried to get the money have they? I thought a random employee had facebooked the OP and asked for her card details. No other request for payment has been made. When the hotel contacts her in an official capacity she can pay the bill.

guestofclanmackenzie · 10/12/2017 21:10

OP you don't need to wait for her to FB message you back with the invoice details!

You can still ensure you settle up with the hotel ASAP by simply emailing the hotel directly!

Unless you are stalling until after Xmas?

LizzyGa · 10/12/2017 21:13

No I would so not pay this money. (A) it's their tough luck they didn't charge you, not your problem at all. (B) Sounds like a complate scam to me. Don't pay it sounds like trouble to me.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 10/12/2017 21:14

How long since you asked for the invoice?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 10/12/2017 21:16

yeah pay them after Christmas, because the worker on $100/month who hasn't been paid yet doesn't need the money as much as you.

At the moment OP has absolutely no reason to believe this is true and not a scammers manipulative line.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 10/12/2017 21:18

Are you kidding? She's just come back from a luxury holiday and she's gambling on magical internet beans? She's loaded.

So, yes, basically. You're jealous that she's been on holiday so you want her to be punished and pay £100 to anybody including a scammer. Because you're bitter.

pisacake · 10/12/2017 21:23

I'm heading off to the SE Asia myself in a couple of weeks.

So bitter.

Mmm sunshine.

Cockadoodledooo · 10/12/2017 21:27

Haven't rtft yet, but surely if you'd have had the money to pay had you been billed correctly at the time, well that would still have been before Christmas, no? So you've spent it on something else instead?
Yabu to not pay right away. YAB incredibly fucking irritating with your tinkly 'oh I'm so ditzy I just goshdarn forgot' Hmm It's almost like, I don't know, you have no intention of paying.

Going to read through now and see if you've developed a conscience. I hope so.

Buttercupsandaisies · 10/12/2017 21:37

I wouldn't pay no, not in any curcumstances.

Pellucid123 · 10/12/2017 21:44

This is a scam.

Christmasgrinchthesecond · 10/12/2017 21:52

Irregardless of whether it's a scam- OP is BU not to contact the hotel and get it sorted.

ticketytock1 · 10/12/2017 21:54

Yabu
But don't send her your card details through fb, contact the hotel reception directly and do it that way

Buttercupsandaisies · 10/12/2017 21:55

Disagree I wouldn't contact at all. It's up to the hotel to contact her through the proper channels - not through some social media request. Just block and forget about it, it's a pretty common method of fraud

"Disagree I wouldn't contact at all. It's up to the hotel to contact her through the proper channels - not through some social media request. Just block and forget about it, it's a pretty common method of fraud"

Fraud? They didn't pay their bill and now the person responsible is chasing up, as is their responsibility.

XmasInTintagel · 10/12/2017 22:06

Pisacake, how do you know it was a luxury holiday? How do you know I wasn't out there teaching English to poor communities? I mean, I wasn't but still ...
Well it was the $100 day trip that probably tipped people off actually OP! As you have said yourself, that would be a months pay for someone living there, and more than many people in the UK would spend on a day trip - hence, luxury.
I don't really see why so many people think its a scam - its someone who works at the hotel, who knows the details of the OPs bill and who has correctly stated that she failed to pay for a specific trip. That is a bit different from a bogus Nigerian prince randomly emailing her.
IF there was a problem, she would have a full record of the woman contacting her and extracting payment, and the woman would lose her job and likely get a criminal record, so I can't really see why an employee would risk everything in such a thoroughly traceable way?

Unfinishedkitchen · 10/12/2017 22:10

An employee pressurising you to pay through facebook and not through the companies own website. Hmmm doesn’t sound kosher to me at all. Call the hotel directly and see what they say. You may very well owe the money but maybe they didn’t take the money as a set up to drain your bank account.
