AIBU to think if you cement your head into a microwave you should be fined by emergency services?

I've just seen on Twitter the news about the YouTuber who put his head into a microwave & then filled it full of poly filler.. Hmm
West Midlands fire service have posted a video basically saying every time they respond to stunts like this they are obviously then not able to go to actual emergencies & this call out would have cost £650.

Aibu to think if someone does something as stupid as this they should be fined?

I've watched the YouTubers response video & whilst he says thanks to the emergency crews, I don't actually think he seems all that apologetic..

I remember a couple of years ago another you tuber threw himself off Tower Bridge for a bet & had to be rescued, he then raised quite a bit of money for the lifeboat charity as thanks.

YANBU. People who are drunk, drugged, overweight or smokers are often addicted to their drug of choice. As far as I know, jamming your head into a microwave isn’t something people are usually addicted to

But an addict still makes a choice. If an alcoholic/drug addict/obese/smoker was in a plane crash and landed in the middle of nowhere with (miraculously) all they needed to survive but without the issue above, they WOULD survive. Withdrawal might be hard, but they would withdraw and continue to live.

But these groups are a huge drain on the NHS.

I should add, I'm not being judgemental. I'm in at least one of those groups (although not in a place where I've been a drain on the NHS)

PerspicaciaTick · 08/12/2017 23:04

I bet he was wetting himself in fear when he found he was stuck and his breathing was compromised. There is something very wrong with him if he has learned nothing from the experience.

JustPutSomeGlitterOnIt · 08/12/2017 23:05

Nah, where do you draw the line? This is all just our opinion.

He was a tit. Some people are. Heck for all we know he pays his taxes towards these services like anyone else.

It's annoying, but it's not for the public services to discern who's worthy I think.

Mummyontherun86 · 08/12/2017 23:12

He shouldn’t be made to pay, that way darkness lies.

The mum who in sleep deprived state forgets to shut the stair gate and takes toddler to A&E after a bump

The student whose drink was spiked but gets accused of taking drugs and made to pay

The old lady who sets fire to her house because she’s got the start of dementia

The person who was sexually abused as a child and drinks too much to forget.

Nope, emergency services need to be free to all regardless of ‘blame’.

7Days · 08/12/2017 23:17

I agree he shouldn't be charged.

But this is where the concept of Public Shaming comes into it's own.

jcsp · 08/12/2017 23:18

If he were to be fined/changed the should be plenty of others receiving invoices.

I don’t really begrudge his stupidity, he’s not alone.

He’s lucky he didn’t boil his head, some may remember the school girl who lost fingers after trying to make a cast of her hands in an art lesson some years ago. Plaster can get very hot as it sets.

saladdays66 · 08/12/2017 23:19

What a nobber.

tiptopteepe · 08/12/2017 23:28

YABU because it would be impossible to draw the line anywhere. I mean would you charge people who went skiing or horse riding or extreme sports who injured themselves or became stuck? You are willfully putting yourself in danger in pursuit or fun in those situations too.

MillennialFalcon · 08/12/2017 23:38

He's a total plonker but I agree with others who say he shouldn't be charged because it's a slippery slope to other people who can be somehow blamed for their circumstances, condition or injury having to pay and potentially going without vital medical care as a result. This is obviously an extreme example where he is completely and utterly in the wrong but policy can't be based on one incident.

VladmirsPoutine · 08/12/2017 23:42

Yabu and sanctimonious.

Goingalonenow · 08/12/2017 23:52

I know the guy. He's a regular in the pub I work in.

He's a cunt.

Sparklesocks · 08/12/2017 23:55

He is so defensive in the response and is rude about those criticising him, clearly hasn’t really learnt anything..

GallicosCats · 09/12/2017 00:03

This puts a whole new slant on the phrase 'Go boil your head'.

Perhaps he should join James, Jeremy and Richard on that Grand Tour thing.

DorisDangleberry · 09/12/2017 00:07

I regularly concrete my head into a household product. It is part of my human rights that tax payers money is spent chiseling me out.

MrsDoyleFallingOutTheWindow · 09/12/2017 00:13

Agree with everyone else that you can't charge people for self inflicted situations because where would you draw the line.

Also agree with a PP that the fire chief gives good interview and was very measured. I particularly liked the bit where he said they had to call in specialist help as it was outside their area of expertise. Trans: they'd never before dealt with a fuckwit who put their head into a microwave oven full of pollyfilla.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 09/12/2017 00:34

You cannot charge someone to use the emergency services because you don’t think they are very nice.

LemonysSnicket · 09/12/2017 00:42

I don’t think people should be charged if they didn’t have intent. So alcohol, they didn’t mean to get so drunk they needed aid, it’s stupid but then people are likely to not seek help for fear of a fine. So if someone fell down the stairs drunk and knocked the self out and didn’t get treatment for fear of a fine, then died as a result from head trauma or concussion ... who does that help?
Cementing your head into a microwave has intent .. basic common sense tells you you will get stuck.

Doingthebattybat · 09/12/2017 11:09

I think drawing it at the point where some twat concretes his head inside a microwave would be a good place to start.

MrsDoyleFallingOutTheWindow · 09/12/2017 11:18
Grin
TrinitySquirrel · 09/12/2017 11:21

Because there was an actual threat to his life (through suffocation) they sadly can't charge.

Though if he was a clever boy he'd donate 10x the amount. Youtubers have that much cash dont they?

Roussette · 09/12/2017 11:25

Elvis has nailed it. never thought I'd type that sentence!

Also agree with Doing. This stupid twat deliberately got his mate to mix concrete and pour it round his head.

JonSnowsWife · 09/12/2017 11:34

YNBU. I thought the same about the youtuber that jumped into the river Thames for a stunt.

AFAIK however at least he had the good grace to look sheepish and donated the proceeds from his video to the RNLI.

JonSnowsWife · 09/12/2017 11:35

The mum who in sleep deprived state forgets to shut the stair gate and takes toddler to A&E after a bump

But that's not comparable to cementing your head in a microwave/jumping into the River Thames is it?

One is an accident, the other is complete stupidity.

MoistCantaloupe · 09/12/2017 11:40

But an addict still makes a choice. If an alcoholic/drug addict/obese/smoker was in a plane crash and landed in the middle of nowhere with (miraculously) all they needed to survive but without the issue above, they WOULD survive

This is a very simplistic view of addiction. Having worked with addicts, it’s really not a straight forward choice and would be terrible if medical services or mental health support wasn’t avalible when needed.

Totally agree with you @lemonysSnicket on the fact that charging people would cause fear/lack of medical attention when needed!

SweetieBaby · 09/12/2017 11:41

Of course they should bill him.

If you are in a RTC you are billed for the ambulance with the expectation that you claim it back from the at fault driver's insurance company (I was hit by a drunk driver who fled the scene. Still received a bill and had to get my insurance company to pay)
