To think pate is not a breakfast food?!

Have just had a conversation with DH about breakfast on Christmas day (inspired by the thread on here) as we are spending it at his parents this year. He said they might have pate on toast! He then went on to say he thinks it's weird that when we have it, it's for lunch as it's a breakfast food? Not a problem on Christmas as I can just have jam on my toast but AIBU to think it's not a breakfast food? I told him I would get MN opinions

It's quite indulgent, but I have it now and again on toast for breakfast as I love it.

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 07/12/2017 22:10

I sometimes have pate on toast for breakfast...

Whisky2014 · 07/12/2017 22:11

Yeh I love Pate but wouldn't ever have it for brekkie. Smooth meat on toast for breakfast? No thanks.

Ansumpasty · 07/12/2017 22:11

It's a staple breakfast food in Northern European countries

crazypenguinlady · 07/12/2017 22:15

I really want pate on toast now! And I've just finalised the shopping order just before reading this so it's too late Angry Grin

'When I was 18 I worked in a hotel in Germany where the main event at breakfast was a vast array of salami, sliced hams, pate and cheese, which would be eaten with bread rolls. I believe this would be standard in many continental countries.'

It's what was on offer, as well as peanut butter, jam, butter and yoghurt, at the most basic of hotels in Amsterdam and what my Dutch friend always has on the table for breakfast when I visit her.

In Russia I was given a plate with pâté and pork fat on it with a glass of vodka for breakfast.

Miscella · 07/12/2017 23:34

I regularly have pate on toast for breakfast. I couldn’t face anything sweet for breakfast.

iboughtsnowboots · 08/12/2017 01:29

I used to only eat sweet things at breakfast, a couple of years in Latin America has changed that and I can manage all sorts of spicy savory stuff now but my first thought was not pate. Then I remembered it is common in European buffet's so I guess it isn't odd, I prefer marmalade though.

Nakedavenger74 · 08/12/2017 01:52

Huh? Who gives a shit? Why we think only refined wheat with sugar on is acceptable at breakfast is beyond me. I've had curry for breakfast many times and my personal trainer regularly shows me her breakfast which is usually chicken breast and broccoli or some aubergine concoction.

LockedOutOfMN · 08/12/2017 01:54

Pâté for breakfast sounds lush and a nice Christmas treat. Is it that different to having ham, sausage or bacon?

When I lived in the U.K., Marks & Spencer sold tuna pâté (don't know if they still do). I'd happily eat that out of the tub with a spoon, at any time of day.

LockedOutOfMN · 08/12/2017 01:55

RavingRoo
Salmon / crab pate on toast with a poached egg, yum.
Couldn't agree more!

diddl · 08/12/2017 08:53

I'm sure that some folks think that fried bread, pots, bacon, egg, sausage, mushrooms, toms & baked beans is an odd combo!

Zoomaa · 08/12/2017 08:58

It is an odd fucking revolting combo.

I tell you what my European relatives think is utterly off the wall - vinegar on chips. They're like WTF!?

MiniTheMinx · 08/12/2017 09:02

Yesterday I ate cake for breakfast.

I'd have eaten pate but I haven't been shopping yet.

Whisky may I ask why?

I have to agree Naked. People living on the continent have a far better grasp of what makes a satiating breakfast than many people in the UK do with their cocoa pops and skimmed milk. I've had things like curry or fish for breakfast, and always try for something high fat, high protein/lower carbs than high carbs/lower fat and protein, as it keeps me full for hours.

kinkajoukid · 08/12/2017 18:32

Mmmmmm, yes LOVE pate on toast for breakfast... or at any time! I much prefer a savoury, continental type breakfast to cereal/ jam and find it gives me more energy.

BackBoiler · 08/12/2017 18:34

Its tasty at any time of the day!

abitoflight · 08/12/2017 18:45

Takeaway curry is breakfast food imo if it’s left over and needs eating
Just like cold sausages from night before
I think this thread has given me Christmas Day breakfast - sounds perfect

curryforbreakfast · 08/12/2017 19:00

I agree

Whisky2014 · 09/12/2017 22:28

whataload because
a) I don't really like having meat for breakfast
b) I have only eaten it as a snack in afternoon or starter so always after mid day at least. I have never associated it as a breakfast food. I guess because it's usually served with a chutney and I wouldn't have that for breakfast either!
C) it's just wrong!
:D

To me breakfast is: toast/cereal/porridge/eggs/fruit/cereal bar and very rarely...a fry up.
