To think pate is not a breakfast food?!

Have just had a conversation with DH about breakfast on Christmas day (inspired by the thread on here) as we are spending it at his parents this year. He said they might have pate on toast! He then went on to say he thinks it's weird that when we have it, it's for lunch as it's a breakfast food? Not a problem on Christmas as I can just have jam on my toast but AIBU to think it's not a breakfast food? I told him I would get MN opinions

I get you OP, however, Bucks Fizz isn't breakfast food either and I'll be having one of those bad boys!

Zoomaa · 07/12/2017 21:21

It's very normal on the continent

crunched · 07/12/2017 21:22

I will have mackerel pâté for breakfast quite regularly- it's less hassle than kippers, but stimulates my tongue with the same flavour iykwim.

LemonysSnicket · 07/12/2017 21:26

far too rich for breakfast!

diddl · 07/12/2017 21:28

It's just food!

Suitable for any meal I'd say.

Thanks for sorting CD breakfast!

I'm having leftover mushroom risotto for breakfast tomorrow,

It's just food that needs eating!

Summergarden · 07/12/2017 21:28

Mmmmm, mackerel pate on bagels, food of the gods!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 07/12/2017 21:29

When I was 18 I worked in a hotel in Germany where the main event at breakfast was a vast array of salami, sliced hams, pate and cheese, which would be eaten with bread rolls. I believe this would be standard in many continental countries.

I became vegetarian - I just couldn't look at that volume of meat at 6am.

Tootyfilou · 07/12/2017 21:30

We always had pate on toast for Christmas breakfast when I was a child. it was quite a treat to have proper pate in the 1970"s in South Wales.

Seniorcitizen1 · 07/12/2017 21:33

Depends. When I stay in hotels abroad I often start breakfast with cold meats like salami ham also smoked salmon and pate before moving on to bacon eggs etc. But not sure I would eat it at home

I'm reading this as I eat pate on toast. Eating it for breakfast seems a great idea to me!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 07/12/2017 21:34

It is in continental Europe.

Oakmaiden · 07/12/2017 21:36

When I was at boarding school we had "hot liver sausage" for breakfast. We used to spread it on toast. It was basically liver pate in a disc shape. Fucking gorgeous. Have never found anything similar for sale...

ILikeyourHairyHands · 07/12/2017 21:36

All foods are breakfast foods. I am completely non-discriminatory as far as food is concerned.

I often have cheese or pate or ham with bread/toast/crackers and tomatoes for breakfast.

Much rather that than crappy cereal or the dirge that is porridge.

DamsonGin · 07/12/2017 21:39

Ski4130 I have to ask, how do you serve the squid and olives, I love both but haven't had them for breakfast.

I'm thinking of having kippers, just as my father, and my father's father did. Though equally could have pate, as my mother and my mother's mother did. Torn between the two now.

peachypetite · 07/12/2017 21:40

It's Christmas, normal food routines go out the window!

PolarBearGoingSomewhere · 07/12/2017 21:41

My Christmas Day breakfast typically consists of 14 Ferraro Rocher, a mince pie and half a tube of Pringles. Pate seems a very sophisticated choice.

Fwiw I have it on toast for lunch usually, but wouldn't be averse to it at breakfast time. I sympathise with OP though; I remember I gasped aloud when I discovered that German families often have hot chocolate for breakfast!

cdtaylornats · 07/12/2017 21:45

I had a fish finger sandwich for breakfast today

InappropriateGavels · 07/12/2017 21:46

Oakmaiden - you've just made me hanker for some haggis on toast for breakfast tomorrow Envy

ILoveMillhousesDad · 07/12/2017 21:47

I love pate on toast. Well I used to. It reminds me of my old dog. My husband had pate a fair but but if the tiniest piece fell on the floor, the dog would roll around and rub himself in it.

It made me feel a bit ill 😷

Bluntness100 · 07/12/2017 21:50

It’s an any time of day food. Like left over pizza. I thought every one knew that?

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 07/12/2017 21:54

Pate on toast is an "any time of day" food and I've had weirder things for breakfast than that. Hummus and cherry tomatoes on toast is good too.

RavingRoo · 07/12/2017 22:01

Samon / crab pate on toast with a poached egg, yum

RestingGrinchFace · 07/12/2017 22:03

It's perfectly suitable for breakfast but definitely not a breakfast food.

Lunde · 07/12/2017 22:03

Paté for breakfast is pretty popular in the Scandi countries and other places in Northern Europe.

bluesu · 07/12/2017 22:06

Pâté on toast with a cup of sweet tea is breakfast of the Gods. My only complaint is that your PiLs save it for Xmas day. Should def be an every day occurrence
