To think pate is not a breakfast food?!

Have just had a conversation with DH about breakfast on Christmas day (inspired by the thread on here) as we are spending it at his parents this year. He said they might have pate on toast! He then went on to say he thinks it's weird that when we have it, it's for lunch as it's a breakfast food? Not a problem on Christmas as I can just have jam on my toast but AIBU to think it's not a breakfast food? I told him I would get MN opinions

Also I totally get that you can have any food at any time of day but if I had to label pate I would label it starter food not breakfast food.

Also, I thought pate was a normal breakfast food!

DrRisotto · 07/12/2017 20:57

It's Christmas....all bets are off. It becomes ideal breakfast food Grin.

ShimmeringBollox · 07/12/2017 20:59

I think it is a breakfast food, I remember my Nana having it for breakfast, so maybe it's something that's fallen out of fashion and simply isn't the norm now.

PinkHeart5914 · 07/12/2017 20:59

What makes a food “breakfast food” though? You can have any food you like at any time of the day.

Lweji · 07/12/2017 20:59

Pate is good at any time of the day or night.

OTOH, I don't get that people actually discuss breakfast.

ShimmeringBollox · 07/12/2017 21:01

Breakfast is one of my favourite conversation topics. How else am I going to find new tasty gems to break my fast with.

chipsandpeas · 07/12/2017 21:03

i could live on toast and pate, breakfast, lunch and dinner

TwitterQueen1 · 07/12/2017 21:05

My tastebuds need something, well, tasty... in the morning. So for me, cheese and pate is a fab breakfast. But then so is balsamic glazed melon with parma ham / prosciutto. Likewise Danish pastries when I'm starving. Or fresh fruit with pancakes. Or leftover onion bharjis.

Breakfast food is whatever you want.

Marnie182 · 07/12/2017 21:05

We have pate on toast for breakfast here too.

StripySocksAndDocs · 07/12/2017 21:05

I'd eat it for breakfast (and have) though wouldn't class it as just a breakfast food. I'd also eat it for a starter (and again have), but don't class it as just a starter food.

So both you and your DH are wrong.

Pâté on toast is fabulous and should definitely be a whenever you want food.

starzig · 07/12/2017 21:05

They sell biscuits aimed at breakfast so pate is definitely OK

AdaColeman · 07/12/2017 21:06

I think it would work well as a Christmas breakfast, especially with a glass of Sauternes. I also like ham and cheese for breakfast, and chilled soup. Xmas Smile Wine

gillybeanz · 07/12/2017 21:08

It's lovely for breakfast, on toast and at Christmas you can have what you want.
I suppose many feel that the sweet pastries in a continental breakfast don't belong there, but if you like them, why not?

camelfinger · 07/12/2017 21:08

Sounds fine to me. Bacon and eggs is a bit weird to have at breakfast time when you think about it.

expatinscotland · 07/12/2017 21:09

There's no such thing as 'breakfast food'. My Dutch friend serves pate for breakfast, and cheese, and sliced meats. I make myself a sandwich. Mmmm.

deepestdarkestperu · 07/12/2017 21:10

Ooh, we have pate in the fridge - definitely having it for breakfast tomorrow morning!

HermioneIsMe · 07/12/2017 21:11

There is not such a thing as b’fast food. This is just food.
Not that much difference imo with sausages and black pudding tbh.

I quite like a bit of pate at b’fast.

BikeRunSki · 07/12/2017 21:12

My French BiL eats pate, tuna straight from the tin and seafood for breakfast most days.

kitkatsky · 07/12/2017 21:12

Breakfast on xmas day! Not normally

KinkyAfro · 07/12/2017 21:12

seriously who cares you cared enough to post!

I wouldn't eat it for breakfast OP, definitely lunch or a starter at evening.. .It's a bit rich for breakfast for me

ivykaty44 · 07/12/2017 21:13

Why would some foods not be eaten to break the fast?

InappropriateGavels · 07/12/2017 21:13

I had pate on toast for breakfast this morning.

We could open up this question to other items - to think pizza is not breakfast food?

I love pizza in the morning. If you like it, then eat it whenever you fancy. It may end up that I have pizza for breakfast on Christmas day. I'd be jumping for joy if that were case.

Littlewoo · 07/12/2017 21:14

I have it on oatcakes for breakfast most days, love it and really satisfying

Mum2jenny · 07/12/2017 21:15

My dcs will eat pate for breakfast or chow mein, it's just food. My dh will eat breakfast cereal at any time. Food is food, it's just a convention when we are expected to eat certain things.
