I thinking need to stop worrying about the debt and seek help with getting your repayments reduced to a nominal sum of £1 each per month as affording a place to live is far more important right now. Don't even worry about adverse credit or not payin back what you owe. You didn't get into debt deliberately so just seek help from a non Judgemental and free to use advice agency.
I really hope you find somewhere to live .

I think trying to be a lodger is the best bet initially. Some people will take one week's deposit and one one weeks rent if you explain your situation- not ideal as it means you will be out straight away if you don't pay on time and you would need to have an honest face as they say as it is a risk and possible hassle for them.

Why weren't they helpful? They changed my life.

If you can't afford rent due to paying out huge minimum payments on debts, you need to get in touch with your creditors. Make a budget to show them outlining your incoming money and outgoings (Stepchange can help you make this and send you a copy so it's neat and tidy etc. They also know how much you can out in certain categories). The goal of this is to prove you cannot afford your current repayments. Then write to all your creditors saying you cannot afford more than £1 a month at present and you hope they will consider freezing interest for the time being. Again, Stepchange can help you with a template letter. Include your budget and post to each creditor. You can print cheaply at the library and send second class (though 2nd class recorded might be worthwhile).

When I did this, every single creditor (15 of them) agreed to freeze interest and charges and accept a repayment of £1 a month. It was a bit stressful as when they sold the debt to debt collection agencies I had to renegotiate but it was fine. A few months down the line when I was back in my feet I called stepchange again and set up a debt management plan. They run this for me. Again, all the creditors have frozen interest and charges and none of them contact me. I pay an affordable amount to Stepchange each month and they manage it all for me. They are amazing. Please try them again.
