To wonder why MN is so left wing/liberal?

MN hates Brexit, the tories, pink toys, violent video games... you get the idea. But in real life most women don't mind buying gender specific toys/clothes and the election/brexit female vote was about 50/50. So what makes this place 90% lefty/lib when general society is either split or completely reversed? Confused

OP posts:

nah, a socialist issue, not a feminist one. My SAH(male)P was screwed more than me by the cuts to SureStart etc.

TammySwansonTwo · 07/12/2017 15:06

Labour lite?! One million people from working families living below the poverty line and you think they're Labour lite? Christ.

tendergreenbean · 07/12/2017 15:12

I think it's rather patronising to assume that the people who don't fall on the left side of the spectrum don't care about anybody else.
It reeks of self-aggrandising tosh, and nobody seems bothered in listening to why people have different views to them.

All I see here, as an other threads, is attempts to discredit through name calling and generalisations. From both sides.
Why can't anyone just debate the issue on it's own merits, without making it a left/right thing.
Brexit was not a "left/right" issue, it's rather naive to assume it's that simplistic.

Feeling uncomfortable with progressivism doesn't necessitate a Tory vote, nor deem someone "right wing".
Limiting yourself and others to a left/right mentality and not appreciating that other people's political opinions are the result of an accumulation of many experiences and much research is insane.

People are beautifully complex, sometimes paradoxical and not always rational. So many things come into play, that reducing people to characatures of their beliefs doesn't solve anything.

It feels like people just want to give themselves a pat on the back for being more virtuous than others - whilst lacking even the slightest hint of true introspection - rather than actually have a debate.

You're all just shit-slinging and persuading nobody.

Missymoo100 · 07/12/2017 15:12

Tammy-
As I just said I don't like the conservatives as they are-
There policies are not conservative at all- I don't think they stand for much other than cuts.
The cuts haven't helped anything- some don't realise deficit which they bleat about reducing is not the same as national debt, which has sky rocketed under conservatives.
I do think labour would completely ruin the country though.

ZaraW · 07/12/2017 15:15

The Conservatives are Labour Lite?! Are you even aware what's happening in the UK ?!!

Missymoo100 · 07/12/2017 15:23

Yes as I said labour lite- more interested in "progressivism" than actual conservative policy

Missymoo100 · 07/12/2017 15:31

In answer to op I agree mumsnet is left leaning-
A demographic of largely snobby middle class women. They like to make out others are stupid, appear intellectually and morally superior, making snide comments like the "daily fail" readers.
They don't get brexit because they're not living in a poor area, where the landscape has changed because of uncontrolled immigration, where you can't get a job or social housing. People are sick of hearing that uncontrolled immigration is a good thing- being told it has no impact on housing, school places, services, NHS- when of course it does, it's a lie we've been told and have to swallow down with good grace so that we're not labelled racist.

ZaraW · 07/12/2017 15:40

That is the first and last time I'll be reading the Conservative Woman...... So who do you want to be leader JRM?

mountford100 · 07/12/2017 15:50

Watch it Missymoo you will get reported by one of the Teachers Pets.

It never ceases to amaze me the ones posting about the desired revolution can also be found asking for advice which is better NLCS or Surbiton High !

It just goes to show that many of the 'lefties' have just had very comfortable lives. This does not mean just financial, this means a host of things such as never being threatened never bullied or feeling isolated in their bubbles.

Hence they have a reason to think that by proposing to be left wing, they have been 'educated' enough to think past selfishness.

What these posters are actually are the modern day equivalent of the 'sanctimonious' Victorian middle class that believed people from 'GIN ALLEY' had to be saved from themselves.

Charles Booth colored these people and their housing in black, to determine them as bottom of society.

This therefore gave the 'bored' middle class Victorians something to campaign about and also to feel morally superior.

The truth was they had nothing but 'contempt' for them , like the majority of the 'wealthy' left.

PerkingFaintly · 07/12/2017 16:02

The irony! Missymoo you are the one dedicatedly ignoring poorer people on MN - and making snide comments while you're about it.

There are many, many threads on here by MNers who are struggling. By MNers who are working poor, or disabled, or escaping domestic violence. By MNers stuck in poor quality rental housing, being forced to move for the third time in two years, or being invaded by landlords/ladies who march into their homes regardless of rights of quiet enjoyment. By MNers caring for elderly parents and doing all of the drudge work Gingernaut describes.

Do you sweep past with your eyes averted, so that you can maintain your fictions that "MNers are..."?

Missymoo100 · 07/12/2017 16:05

Perking- that's bull

thecatfromjapan · 07/12/2017 16:24

I'm loving the irony of the fact that this thread has so many 'silenced right wingers' on it. Grin

Question: Why are so many of you so particularly irked by well-off Labour supporters?

Are we only allowed to be Labour supporters if we live on gruel? Are we breaking some sort of rule (of yours) in not voting Conservative?

Missymoo100 · 07/12/2017 16:31

mountford

  • yes I don't think leftists represent the common working folk anymore.
They're too busy telling us that uncontrolled immigration is a wonderful thing which we should be grateful for. They like creating various disenfranchised groups which they like to remind how oppressed they are, usually by distortion of truth or now blatant lies to divide everyone against each other. If you oppose any of their ideologies your a racist, sexist, homophobe, transphobic, right wing, facist who hates the poor.
puffyisgood · 07/12/2017 16:32

On Brexit specifically, that was basically won by the over 50's (both genders), who are hugely under represented on MN. But even that on its own isn't enough to explain the 'bias' on here. It's a combination I suppose of the other things people have mentioned, MN being disproportionately affluent and educated, and liberal types being disproportionately vocal.

Thesqueezermustghost · 07/12/2017 16:36

..if only there were more haters on here shitting on immigrants...........shudder.

BertrandRussell · 07/12/2017 16:40

You do know that we don't have uncontrolled immigration, don't you?

Missymoo100 · 07/12/2017 16:41

The squeeze-
Here we go, anyone who might see a problem with mass uncontrolled migration is a racist. Typical.

mountford100 · 07/12/2017 16:43

That's because i find this site to be very 'ageist' you continually read posters saying how 'lucky' people over 55 were and how unlucky they are .Some posters have even said that people over 70 should not have a vote in Elections .

This is because it is very difficult to manipulate old and experienced people in to voting the way the 'trendies' want them to.

Instead many on the left advocate for 16 year old's to have the vote, knowing how easy it is to manipulate or promise miracles.

shhhfastasleep · 07/12/2017 16:46

Over 50. Voted Remain. Mum over 80. Voted Remain.
Please don't think all over 50s are some generic mass of easily led idiots.

PerkingFaintly · 07/12/2017 16:46

And claiming poorer people can only hold left wing principles if they've been bought for £10 a week is the height of patronising, sneery contempt.

mountford1008 Wed 06-Dec-17 23:10:42
I think you can only be left wing if you are either very poor where just a extra £10 a week is enough to swing your vote . Or alternatively comfortably off enough to indulge in virtue signalling !

Is having an informed opinion and principles not something you credit to people under a certain income level, mountford?

thecatfromjapan · 07/12/2017 16:52

The one and only thing that cheers me up about Brexit - and I'm one of the over 50s who voted Remain; the strongest correlation was between authoritarian attitudes and voting Leave, not age, btw - is that DH met with someone from DEXEU and was assured that the government is considering completely liberalising immigration across the board, after we leave.

Oh, how I would laugh if that happened!

I live next door to an ex member of the Labour Party. They have 2 nannies from a developing country who have left their own children over there with extended family and they pay them way less than minimum wage. Total hypocrites.

Missymoo100 · 07/12/2017 16:54

Yes spot on- then kids can be indoctrinated at an early age into the leftist trendy cause de jour.

Older people have much more life experience, yet i see many an instance when they are blamed for brexit, I have even seen comments suggesting they should die off so we can remain in the eu.

Missymoo100 · 07/12/2017 16:57

Cat from japan-
Yes I believe corbyn would invite mass immigration from no eu countries- he said as much
Just because the goverment are trecharous b*stards doesn't mean the brexiteers were wrong.
