To wonder why MN is so left wing/liberal?

MN hates Brexit, the tories, pink toys, violent video games... you get the idea. But in real life most women don't mind buying gender specific toys/clothes and the election/brexit female vote was about 50/50. So what makes this place 90% lefty/lib when general society is either split or completely reversed? Confused

I think Mumsnet is quite balanced between left and right wing, but you will tend to get the more extreme or vocal posters expressing themselves and lots of people who are in the middle or just plain unsure won't join the debate. It's just like on the atheist/theist debates. People who don't care that much are unlikely to post.

I agree, I think it's just a product of online discourse in general though, this site is balanced but is definetly left leaning which is nothing to be ashamed of, but that's not due to education or whatever else backslapping metric posters use.

I admit to confirmation bias, but even small c conservatives are usually shot down by the many active party members on this site who will not deviate from just pushing the party line.

thecatfromjapan · 07/12/2017 18:11

gin Some of 'the Left' are against open borders. Actually, most of the mainstream left are against open borders - it's a niche view.*

Some of 'the right' are very, very in favour of open borders. Not just more immigration but full-on open borders.

Prepare to have your mind blown: some of 'the Left' are very, very anti-immigration.

And it is quite true that authoritarianism is not the preserve of the right. Which is one reason I suggested that some folk on this thread are probably better characterised as authoritarian nihilists, rather than right-wing. I suspect they'd have more in common with left-wing authoritarians than the progressive, or even centre, right.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 07/12/2017 18:16

cat, I'm aware some of the left are anti-immigration and some of the right are pro. But pretty much open borders are left wing orthodoxy these days and although niches may pretend otherwise it's extremely disingenuous of you to pretend that the left are anti-migration in general.

Justanotherlurker · 07/12/2017 18:18

It's great isn't it OP? So refreshing in this world of right wing fake news

I know, I only read the canary and get my non click-bait headlines from the Indepentant, occasionally read CIF to make sure I get the real factual news....

Very well said - it's extremely disingenuous. What proportion of the Left are "very, very anti-immigration"? Which lefty political party is? Not Labour, not the Lib Dems, not the Greens, not the SNP, not the Welsh nationalists.

Mind blown, eh?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 07/12/2017 18:21

LOL. The 'Independent' is a Saudi owned Saudi mouth piece and the Canary is openly extremely biased to the left.

I might as well say 'Well I get my unbiased and objective news from Brietbart and the Sun'.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 07/12/2017 18:22

And CIF who suppressed news of the Cologne attacks...right...

GinsAndTonic · 07/12/2017 18:27

To be fair to justanotherlurker, I think they were being sarcastic Wink. But it can be hard to tell these days!

Viviennemary · 07/12/2017 18:28

It's not fashionable to be right wing these days. So you send your kids to private school. You wouldn't of course if you had decent schools nearby. You use private medicine. You couldn't afford time away from your work or family. But those of course are awful right wing things that you wouldn't need to use anyway if Labour was in power because everything would be just perfect. Hmm

BishopBrennansArse · 07/12/2017 18:28

Most right wing posters on here are extreme. I've seen overt racism and homophobia and calls for eugenics for disabled people justified. They are a minority, though.

Mostly posters here are quite centrist.

I'm left of centre due to my own life experience living as a disabled person and having experienced the effects of austerity on my own health care and disability benefits. I've also experienced the rise in hate towards disabled people that went alongside this. I'm certainly not the frothing communist madwoman I was painted to be by far right AstroTurfers back in 2010 when I pointed out what benefit reform would mean for working families as well as those who were solely reliant on benefits to live.

Justanotherlurker · 07/12/2017 18:30

Do I really need to point out being sarcastic on a predominantly British website?

You also forgot that the independant had Russian with KGB ties long before it was fashionable for people to blame the Russian for interfering with our news

Eltonjohnssyrup · 07/12/2017 18:32

Sorry lurker I apologise! But you know there are people on here would say that in all seriousness!

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 07/12/2017 18:43

I find it to be quite the opposite!

Justanotherlurker · 07/12/2017 18:52

I do Elton, there are quite a few posters on this thread who unironically have posted Canary and obvious fake click bait Inependant articles in the run up the last GE, they aren't afraid to call others uneducated daily mail readers either.

Justanotherlurker · 07/12/2017 19:01

Well to be fair, JC did say he would end FOM if he got elected, it's usually brushed over though when talking about Labour being a brexit saviour, it's a hard right policy apparently and people are trying politically camp brexit as a left v right issue.

user1471596238 · 07/12/2017 19:05

Personally, I think that if we can resist immediately provocative/insulting/baity labelling like 'leftie', 'fascist', 'remoaner', 'snowflake', using 'liberal' in a sneering way and many other phrases that are frequently being used in social media against people with opposing views then it might be a step towards getting back to tolerance of said views.

user1471596238 · 07/12/2017 19:08

It's absolutely right that there are people on both the left and right of the political spectrum that have been in favour of brexit. The divergence is how either side views what a post brexit society would look like.

Sevendown · 07/12/2017 19:14

MN congregates the type of mothers who hate the ‘hun’ world of netmums.

I imagine they are more brexiting and pink than us.

Possibly because they are poorer and less likely to benefit from the EU?

BORING SITE.

However, their posters are normal people with everyday life's.
Not every single one of them as a post grad qualification ....

ACertainRatio · 07/12/2017 20:15

I just hate the Tory Party: it's in my genes, I think. The country feels grim when we're being held to ransom by ideological cuts. I don't like any of the opposition either, mind you...

My ideal system would be a form of PR, returning anti-Tory coalitions who tax and spend on NHS, education etc. I'd happily pay a few hundred pounds extra in tax each month, and I'm not a high earner by any stretch. I think looking after each other is the sign of a civilised society.

MN showcases a mixture of views although I do worry about the Russian shills frequenting the Brexit threads.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 07/12/2017 20:17

Well, yes, but all that just shows how broken our asylum system is. Rather than asylum being given to those who are tough enough and rich enough we should be looking at ways to proactively go to refugee zones and bring those most in need and in danger to the UK. Particularly the persecuted like Christians and Yazidi, children with health problems and women exploited sexually.

At the moment our asylum system helps those who are the least vulnerable which is not what it was set up for. And nobody can challenge this because the left won't admit the 'child' refugees turning up in Croydon are 40 year old men.

Yep cat nailed it! I used to be Yoko but deregistered. I'm a fan of lesser-known Factory bands.
