To ask what on earth to buy my (seriously ill) dad for Christmas

My dad is very ill and still not sure he will make it till Christmas. Cant eat, rarely awake and not much interest in anything. He also has enough money to buy anything he might want. He's not in an altruistic place or I'd do something charitable in his name. What the heck do I buy him. I dont have lots of spare cash at the moment - using it all on regular trips home.

I woulden't, your being there and your time with him is enough. This is from someone who's dad and gran died of cancer.

If you want, find a special photo of him or you both, and buy a frame for it.

I got my dad socks, a book on landrovers he wanted to read. He died in Feb so he got something out of it. I guess. Sorry about your dad it’s a horrible time.

Could you make a photo album of him through the years? We done this for my granny when she was very ill and she loved it

Put it by his bedside, when the inevitable happens you will have that special photo or photo album for your to look through.

Also FIL really felt the cold when he was like that, how about a fleece blanket?

Things my dad loved in the final weeks of his life -

A good back scratcher.
New warm socks and slippers.
A DVD film about sailing that he'd not seen (and enjoyed!).

I was going to suggest a nice warm blanket, or nice pjs. How about some of his favourite music, you could put together his favourite songs and play it to him whilst he’s in bed. Or if he’s the reading type but can no longer read an audiobook.

I just didn't, asthey weren't aware, I just sat there with them in my own grief.there are some wonderful suggestions here. How about a photo Album or special photo in a frame by his bead, and a nice blanket and socks to keep him warm.

my hubby gave his dad a book from the local bookshop with lots of photos of the town years gone by, just on a whim really. but it gave him things to talk about of his younger years we would never of known. sorry you are going thru this, you sound a very loving daughter.

Anything photo like think is good and easy-ish to sort.

Does he like music? How about 'curating' I hate that word- a really significant play list of his favourite music on Spotify?

May be a good idea if he's not awake enough to read.

A recent photo is nice because he can show it off to the staff (with you and him together or grandkids etc)
A nice (not feminine) handcream and lip salve. It's so drying in hospital.

God this brings back memories of Christmas shopping for my dying mum eight years ago. In the end I bought her a teddy with a pouch that you warm in the microwave. She had it in bed with her until she died. I honestly can’t bring myself to think about how I managed to buy it, it was a very dark time in my life. I’m glad I did though.

My partner is getting his dad a Turkish shave - they're going to come to his bed and make a real fuss of him.

What about a digital photo frame then you can upload pics to memory card/usb and he can watch them?

@lookingforacorkscrew - I bought my Mum the exact same thing 8 years ago, she too had it with her in bed until she died. So sorry for everyone’s losses. Lots of lovely ideas OP and to you.
