AIBU - Egg or beans on toast + veg is sometimes okay for dinner

I'm having an argument with DH. We are really skint at the moment and a couple of times recently I have given the children (and me) beans & sausages from a tin on toast or scrambled egg on toast with a side of green beans or brocolli. They have fruit and yogurt to follow. This is normally at the end of the week before payday. And the children like it.

He's really against this and says it's not a proper dinner and doesn't like me doing it. He won't eat it himself and always makes himself something different, which is fine as he does a very physical job, but for me and the children I think it's okay occasionally. AIBU?

Are your kids hungry? No. Job done then. Don't sweat it.

You don't need validation from anyone here, and your DH should remove his head from his arse.

I eat a whole tin of beans at a time Blush

I also love sausage and beans in a tin. One of my ultimate guilty treats.

Just beans on toast though is an absolutely fine meal in my opinion!

Nom...beans on toast, worcester sauce stirred in, strong cheddar grated on top, sprinkle of chopped parsley...ambrosia!

Swatsup, I used to. beans on toast with sliced carrots and cucumber. I was obsessed that DC had their 5 a day when they were small, however picky they were about food generally.

I eat that kind of thing all the time (minus tinned sausages). It's a nutritionally balanced meal and very easy to prepare as well as being inexpensive. Also totally normal AFAIK. Win-win-win-win.

Me and my partner had a full english breakfast for dinner as we had all the ingredients in and fancied one
Id say beans toast broccoli and yogurt and fruit all make a meal that's perfectly healthy to have everyday if you wished
Does your DH know 1 can of beans has the same amount of protein as a steak ? Plus carbs from the toast vitamins from the broccoli and fruit and calcium from the yogurt its all a healthy balanced meal

DS1 had a kit kat last night. He refused his sausage and chips.

MerryMarigold · 06/12/2017 11:09

Can't have beans without some Lea & Perrins. Super fussy ds1 is the same.

VioletHaze · 06/12/2017 11:13

Sounds totally OK to me. In fact, it's what I cooked for dinner last night - cheesy scrambled eggs on toast with tinned fruit and yoghurt for pudding. It's not what I'd serve every night, but no one ever died of malnutrition from a single evening of food like that.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 06/12/2017 15:51

DT2 had jaffa cakes and a mug of Malted milk for tea last night as he felt grotty.

Today he has eaten, malt loaf, cherry tomatoes and 1/4 of an apple. (he left his taramasalata and pittas and is refusing dinner). He'll live.

Buy the Heinz no added sugar ones. They taste great to me.

ermmmm.... feel like Im missing the point - surely scrambled egg on toast with a side of greens is a super nutritious and enjoyable supper... its one I choose to have once a week regardless of whether my bank balance is up or down.... Eggs have got to be one of healthiest cheapest proteins out... and yes, I do buy organic and supper is a lot cheaper than non organic meat or whatever....
