AIBU - Egg or beans on toast + veg is sometimes okay for dinner

I'm having an argument with DH. We are really skint at the moment and a couple of times recently I have given the children (and me) beans & sausages from a tin on toast or scrambled egg on toast with a side of green beans or brocolli. They have fruit and yogurt to follow. This is normally at the end of the week before payday. And the children like it.

He's really against this and says it's not a proper dinner and doesn't like me doing it. He won't eat it himself and always makes himself something different, which is fine as he does a very physical job, but for me and the children I think it's okay occasionally. AIBU?

If there are alternatives there (you say he cooks himself something different?) then you're not really struggling are you?

There you go then OP. Financial problems solved!

Tinned spaghetti hoops (half tin) with a poached egg on toast was a regular tea for DD (once a week). I never even bothered with other veg (or fruit and yoghurt) 😊.
Only on MN does it seem normal to give kids fruit and yoghurt after their main meal every night.

I think it's fine except for tinned sausages. It tastes fake and vile.

SheSparkles · 05/12/2017 10:39

Beans on toast (esp if wholemeal) is one of the most nutritionally balances meals you can get! Large amounts of extra brownie points for serving it with veg! Your dh is being a knob

Bobbins43 · 05/12/2017 10:41

Something on toast nights is a regular occurrence here at Bobbins Towers. Your DH can bloody cook if he doesn't like it

DonkeyOil · 05/12/2017 10:41

at least it doesn’t end up with her eating something reconstituted, in breadcrumbs with oven chips.

Do you mean chicken nuggets by any chance? Grin Actually, if you go by the 'traffic light' food classification, oven chips look comfortingly healthy. Much better than deep fried chips, I should think.

RatRolyPoly · 05/12/2017 10:44

Cheerios you're my hero for saving salt for me! Sugar I couldn't give a toss about, but salt; HEAVEN.

YANBU OP. It's pretty unanimous.

pigeondujour · 05/12/2017 10:45

I don't understand how people can say sausages in beans tastes bad. I concede it's not very good for you, but I honestly can't think of many nicer treats. Probably the same oddballs who don't like cocktail sausages.

RavingRoo · 05/12/2017 10:46

It’s cheaper to make pasta - get a 500g bag for 50p, use tinned tomatoes, frozen veg, and minced meat for the sauce, and you have a meal for all of you plus leftovers for the same cost as the beans on toast.

Like others have said - stock up on tins, frozen, and dried food when you have money.

KathArtic · 05/12/2017 10:46

My teens love beans on toast (no veg), so on those nights I will do DH an omlette - 3 eggs and then anything from the bottom of the fridge such as tomatoes/mushrooms/onion/peppers/frozen peas or sweetcorn/ham or bacon.

He's always stuffed afterwards and has a big appetite.

soberexpat · 05/12/2017 10:48

my picky DD has sometimes just had a bowl of cold baked beans for dinner. i consider this a triumph as she lives off fresh air.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 05/12/2017 10:49

There is no way you can buy pasta, minced beef, vegetables and tomatoes for the same price as beans on toast.

Furthermore, mince, frozen veg and tinned tomatoes would make a really unpleasant sauce.

CheeriosEverywhere · 05/12/2017 10:50

Furthermore, mince, frozen veg and tinned tomatoes would make a really unpleasant sauce

Of course it would not if you made it properly. How do you think bolognese is made? Vegetables, minced meat, tomatoes!

Eltonjohnssyrup · 05/12/2017 10:51

Thanks all, I will show him this. We do have pasta and baked potatoes too, but this is the real dog end of the week cheaper than chips option. At least I know I'm not alone thinking this is okay!

I'm with you, pigeon. Just off to buy cocktail sausages.

HolyShet · 05/12/2017 10:55

We have a something on toast meal once or twice per week here, beans, egg or cheese, with a bit of salad if it's cheese and a bit of fruit after. Sometimes we even have tinned tomato soup. Gasp.

Its perfectly nutritious.

Though I'd never touch a tinned sausage.

Also, for the fretful upthread, it's the diet as a whole that matters, not individual meals. If you consider your eating over a week does it seem good and balanced? If so your DH can do one, frankly.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 05/12/2017 10:55

Onions, garlic, celery, herbs, mushrooms...not a bag of frozen veg!

user789653241 · 05/12/2017 11:00

pigeondujour, I think tinned sausages taste vile, but I love cocktail sausages.

DeleteOrDecay · 05/12/2017 11:00

Beans on toast is absolutely fine, mine have it maybe once a week or so. I usually chop up some cherry tomatoes or cucumber as a side but not always!

They are partial to a fish finger and sometimes I even do them a 'cold dinner' consisting of sandwiches/wrap, fruit, yogurt etc. Nothing bad has happened to them yet.

user9217 · 05/12/2017 11:02

It's perfectly fine - I give this kind of dinner to my almost 1 year old ds regularly he loves it lol. A nice quick warming dinner after a busy day and it's cheap! Yanbu

CheeriosEverywhere · 05/12/2017 11:04

Onions, garlic, celery, herbs, mushrooms...not a bag of frozen veg!

Frozen onions, frozen garlic etc etc. You assumed a bag of diced mixed veg but nobody said that.

You can make an excellent bolognese using frozen ingredients.

RavingRoo · 05/12/2017 11:04

@Tawdrylocalbrouhaha - I make a bolognese type sauce without onions and garlic as I learned to do when I was dirt poor. Will cook the veg in water with salt and pepper and whatever else is on hand to make a stock, then use a bit of that to cook the mince. And use a bit in the tomatoes when I cook them.

IceFall · 05/12/2017 11:05

*Well it's bad because it's a lot of sugar OP and processed meat is really not good for anyone but on here, a lot of people will say it's fine
*
That's just bollocks. Its not a lot of sugar in the scheme of things at all, and the stuff about processed meat is badly reported and misunderstood.

Well.... you really shouldn't eat more than 25g of sugar a day. (The uk sugar allowance is whacko and above the level WHO recommends).

1 tin of beans has 19.6g of sugar... That is virtually all your daily allowance so it is entirely accurate to say they are full of sugar.

RavingRoo · 05/12/2017 11:05

But yea as Cheerios said can get frozen veg with onions too - just pricier.

Camomila · 05/12/2017 11:06

You can buy soffrito mix (onion, carrot, celery) frozen for bolognaise. Saves chopping time and means things don’t go off.
