AIBU - Egg or beans on toast + veg is sometimes okay for dinner

I'm having an argument with DH. We are really skint at the moment and a couple of times recently I have given the children (and me) beans & sausages from a tin on toast or scrambled egg on toast with a side of green beans or brocolli. They have fruit and yogurt to follow. This is normally at the end of the week before payday. And the children like it.

He's really against this and says it's not a proper dinner and doesn't like me doing it. He won't eat it himself and always makes himself something different, which is fine as he does a very physical job, but for me and the children I think it's okay occasionally. AIBU?

Absolutely nothing wrong with it OP. My children love a poached or dippy egg with toast and I buy supermarket own brand reduced salt and sugar beans to have on toast. I'd imagine it's more nutritious than the nuggets and chips people wouldn't think twice about serving up. Not that there's anything wrong with those either, the best thing you can do is give your children a varied diet with a bit of everything.

Cagliostro · 05/12/2017 13:27

I was so excited when I found those little tins with the sausages in with the beans. But the sausages are horrible now, they have changed from what I remember! I'm gutted!

Obviously YANBU though. There's veg, I sometimes forget to add any so you're doing better than me :o

FireCracker2 · 05/12/2017 13:28

Eggs on toast-Ok, beans on toast ok. But with veg? Revolting and try-hard!

Eliza9917 · 05/12/2017 14:35

I want to know what the husband eats instead.

IfYouDontImagineNothingHappens · 05/12/2017 15:15

YANBU for a cheap meal once a week...however very surprised that he'll make himself something different if the aim is to save money. Think it's pretty selfish to allow his wife and growing children to make the sacrifice

TinklyLittleLaugh · 05/12/2017 15:17

Everyone's fave meal in our house is huevos rancheros; basically sausage (chorizo), beans, tomatoes, veg and eggs, albeit ponced up. but nutritional probably very similar to eggs and sausage on toast plus veg.

nigelschristmasham · 05/12/2017 15:27

Its fine. No kid died from having beans on toast.
Who analizes the protein, carb, vitamin Content of every meal. Life is too
Shortt

ginteresting · 05/12/2017 15:28

We’re not skint, but my kids love Heinz’s beans and sausages in a tin and the macaroni cheese that smells like vomit. Op, you are feeding your children food they will eat, the end.

Coconutspongexo · 05/12/2017 16:20

That actually sounds disgusting - I googled to see if I could find a pic of it or literally anyone else that has it, google failed me.

I did find this though:

www.slimmingeats.com/blog/cheesy-broccoli-toasts

Doesn’t look too bad actually there was also posh beans on toast (sourdough bread and garlic)

BrutusMcDogface · 05/12/2017 16:26

All the people criticising the geeen veg with the beans- ffs. It's not meant to be gourmet food. It's healthy and if they'll eat it then why shouldn't the op give them it?! It's the same same giving veg sticks with pizza because I feel like they're at least getting some nutrition.

expatinscotland · 05/12/2017 16:37

I love it when the food bores show up on these threads. It's fine, OP, and if your h wants them to have something else he can cook it for them himself.

JonSnowsWife · 05/12/2017 16:46

YABU to have veg at the side, most people have ketchup Wink

But no YNBU - DH is being a bit silly.

niccyb · 05/12/2017 18:55

Nothing wrong with it. my daughter is now 14 and will occasionally make herself this as it’s still a favourite of hers

notangelinajolie · 05/12/2017 18:56

So after reading this thread I've just gone and made myself jacket potato with beans and cheese and it was bloody lovely Xmas Grin

Elendon · 05/12/2017 18:59

I just want to add that a bag of pasta for 30p is something I'd hate.

Beans on (buttered) toast anytime!

MexicanBob · 05/12/2017 19:01

My DM would have happily served that without the veg on the side.

noeffingidea · 05/12/2017 19:05

I wouldn't have the veg on the side. Carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, and frozen peas are a good snack though, to fit in with the 5 a day.
Beans on toast with a fried egg on top is more or less what I lived on when I was skint last year. Very filling, a good source of protein and fibre, and very cheap. What more could you ask for?

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 05/12/2017 19:06

It’s not a meal I would give my children, as beans and sausages are high is fat, salt and sugar, mine also don’t like beans.

But it’s a meal.

Sludgecolours · 05/12/2017 19:38

Depends on the beans and the sausages! If they are reasonable quality I think it's fine.

Kittykat93 · 05/12/2017 19:47

It baffles me that there are some people who don't think it's acceptable to give children something like beans on toast once a week. Ffs Confused

WanderingJules · 05/12/2017 19:48

Beans and toast yum
Tinned sausage and beans on toast yum
Cheese and beans on toast yum
Egg on toast yum

Could you make a large chilli con carne in the slow cooker, with jacket potatoes for the children, and chips or garlic bread for dh for his dinner ? Would that be cheaper, put loads of veg in the chilli to bulk it out?

HandbagKrabby · 05/12/2017 20:11

We have beans on toast fairly regularly. Today as it happens.

I get the impression it’s not middle class enough for the food bores as it’s easy to make, completely unexotic, easy to source and cheap.

Don’t feel bad op and I hope your dh isn’t having steak to your tinned sausages!

WanderingJules · 05/12/2017 20:45

I wasn’t being sarcastic with the yums btw, nothing wrong with B on T etc whatsoever.

Just an idea with the chilli 🌶 xx

EnglishGirlApproximately · 05/12/2017 20:47

Ds has had a cooked scotch egg and beans for his tea tonight, some of the posters on here would have a heart attack if they saw it! He’s tired, full of cold and grumpy and frankly my only thought is giving him something warm to eat which fills his belly that he’ll happily eat.
He has a good balanced diet, the odd quick meal like that does no harm at all.

Swatsup · 05/12/2017 20:51

Come on op! Admit you don’t really put a side of veg with beans on toast.
