Please help me!

We have decided that we're going to have a real tree this year! Yay!! However... we need help to settle a debate.. this happens every bloody year!

Tinsel on the tree or not? I say not, we never had it when growing up it just doesn't feel right.. DH is adamant tinsel only goes on the tree and they always had tinsel on the tree as a child.. his Mum disputes this fact and her tree is always beautiful and tinsel free Hmm

I did the tree beautifully last year with no tinsel, went out for a night shift and he covered it in tinsel...

I've attached pictures of our first tree together which he did himself and is atrocious and his mums to prove there's no tinsel!

TLDR- tinsel on tree yes or no?

I love tinsel. Tucked right in, at least half way back down the branch towards the trunk. Draped rather than spiralled.

GreenTulips · 04/12/2017 17:02

Tinsel on trees is bloody awful!!!

We had the same debate and I won!! Anyone comes near my try with tinsel and it's whipped off sharpish

TheFallenMadonna · 04/12/2017 17:03

Laughing a bit at the "technically common" comment. Technically??

GreenTulips · 04/12/2017 17:07

If it looks bare it doesn't have enough decorations

TrinitySquirrel · 04/12/2017 17:07

No tinsel on the tree ever. It's for decorating mirrors and picture frames if you must. It's from the Woolworths era and belongs with the rest of the shop.

Lametta is for the tree if anything!

PinkSquash · 04/12/2017 19:15

Tinsel AND lametta in this house. Can't beat it.

PizzaPower · 04/12/2017 19:22

I’m now very confused. Growing up I always thought tinsel was for trees. However not 60 minutes ago DW has told me we shouldn’t be putting it on our tree.
I’m not going to argue with her... just sneak some on while she’s not looking.

Crunchymum · 04/12/2017 19:24

Tinsel all over the shit heap that is the kids tree.

No tinsel on the main my tree.

IAmALeafOnTheWindWatchHowISoar · 04/12/2017 19:28

AmayaBuzzbee · 04/12/2017 19:57

Yes to tinsel -BUT only if it’s silver or white, so gives the impression of snow/ice on the tree. No to any other colours.

PeanutButterCheesecake · 04/12/2017 20:22

Definitely yes to tinsel..i didn't realise some people didn't!!

The DGP always had tinsel, DM never did. We don't because we have a 2ft, fake, predecorated tree and it would fall over! Xmas Grin

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 04/12/2017 20:41

Peanut your tree is beautiful!!!😃

Allthewaves · 04/12/2017 20:44

The kids love tinsel. I possibly gave more tinsel than tree. They requested more while shoppingHmmGrin

BackBoiler · 05/12/2017 17:23

Can you not buy some thin tinsel and then its a compromise?

irishbaby · 05/12/2017 17:35

For 14 years we've had so many trees. Fibre optic was lovely but couldn't put baubles on them, or white trees.

This year we've gone green ( Colorado pine 6ft in Tesco omg what a tree) with multi coloured lights and loads of baubles.

We put 3 tinsel on red ones.
Draped so looks like one huge piece.
It does set it off nicely.

As a kid God too much tinsel was on them. That's why i only use a little. It just depends how you place it.

Have a good Christmas everyone xx

yomellamoHelly · 05/12/2017 17:41

We have tinsel, but it's the posh sort and is pushed into the middle of it so it reflects the fairy lights back / glitters. Don't over do it either.
My mum used to be very attached to lametta and would put so much on as an outer shell to the tree that you couldn't see any of the lights / baubles clearly.

PeapodBurgundy · 05/12/2017 17:43

I hate tinsel personally. I hate the look, feel and smell of it. I'm very particular about my tree, and like it perfect. I don't know what I'm going to do when DS is bigger and wants to put colourful crap decorations and lights all over it. probably get two trees.

Codlet · 05/12/2017 17:44

Yes to tinsel.

Applesandpairsonthestairs · 05/12/2017 17:47

Come on OP! Where's your Christmas spirit !! Bring on the tinsel!!! Christmas trees are for family fun! Not to give the house a designer look!! Xmas Smile[santa]

Ladymadness · 05/12/2017 17:56

Put the tinsel on first, it shows less. It's a very British thing to have it on the tree. No right or wrong these days just personal choice and family tradition. I've noticed in Europe you can't even buy tinsel...

Originalfoogirl · 05/12/2017 18:01

Tinsel on the tree. Anything else is wrong.

Someonessnackbitch · 05/12/2017 18:02

I hate tinsel 😩

Frederickvonhefferneffer · 05/12/2017 18:02

Tinsel in the bin.
