Please help me!

We have decided that we're going to have a real tree this year! Yay!! However... we need help to settle a debate.. this happens every bloody year!

Tinsel on the tree or not? I say not, we never had it when growing up it just doesn't feel right.. DH is adamant tinsel only goes on the tree and they always had tinsel on the tree as a child.. his Mum disputes this fact and her tree is always beautiful and tinsel free Hmm

I did the tree beautifully last year with no tinsel, went out for a night shift and he covered it in tinsel...

I've attached pictures of our first tree together which he did himself and is atrocious and his mums to prove there's no tinsel!

TLDR- tinsel on tree yes or no?

I didn’t even know people did their trees without tinsel! Am now flirting with the idea of going tinsel free just for novelty’s sake.

gobster · 04/12/2017 01:27

I’m a no tinsel person but it’s mostly as I prefer lots of lights and bells and a more Scandinavia style

Battleax · 04/12/2017 01:31

No tinsel.

Ribbons or bead strings. Lametta if you must

No tinsel here! I hate it (and for some reason 19m old is terrified of it 🤔)

Tinselled · 04/12/2017 01:49

@pisacake I can't find any photos of the tree from the last 4 years! So went with the first one we had which was £15 artificial tree from Tesco that was absolutely awful. I can't make artificial trees look nice at all! I'm hoping this year with a real one it might be easier!!

dh and I have had similar disagreements and I managed (just about) to bring him to my way of thinking that tinsel (good quality thick stuff) wraps around the tree trunk. I really don't like it lose at the end of the branches as it overwhelms the decoration I think.

KickAssAngel · 04/12/2017 02:14

wrapped up close to the trunk, with lights reflecting off it, then ornaments on the edge of branches.

But I hate real trees, sorry, so I'm probably a heathen.

Insomnibrat · 04/12/2017 02:16

No to tinsel!

HuskyMcClusky · 04/12/2017 02:30

Yes to tinsel.

And coloured lights (tree only! not outside!) and unmatching decorations.

Christmas trees are supposed to be tacky. In my world. Grin

HashtagTired · 04/12/2017 05:04

I always used to think tinsel went on the tree, but one year I went rogue and went without and since then I'd say, no tinsel. Tinsel is tacky imo.

aSleepyPrincess · 04/12/2017 05:46

Love tinsel, I don't care if it's tacky either Grin

CiderwithBuda · 04/12/2017 05:56

No tinsel here. Used to have it as children but I don't like it now. I think whoever said it seems old fashioned is right. For me anyway.

Although I've never tried it wrapped around the trunk with the lights on after and then the decorations. Haven't seen it done either. That might work and would be a compromise.

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/12/2017 06:17

If you have some already toss a coin to decide, or alternate tinsel/no tinsel each year.

If you don't have any, don't buy any more and use other decorations. I think it falls into the 'nasty non degradable plastics that's killing the planet' category so you don't need it now.

DappledThings · 04/12/2017 06:18

Trees without tinsel look naked and unfinished to me

Ifailed · 04/12/2017 06:21

looks like its 50/50 on MN. How about you arrange the tree and seating so the 1/2 he can see is Tinsel City, whilst the other half is tinsel free?

SparkleFizz · 04/12/2017 06:21

We usually have tinsel on the tree.

Incidentally, we also always had tinsel on the tree when I was a child, but these days my parents decorate their tree without using tinsel.
So I wouldn’t take a currently tinsel free tree as evidence that they’ve never had tinsel.

XmasFairy86 · 04/12/2017 06:22

Yes. Yes. Yes!!!!

Tinsel is a tree staple!!

CottonEyeJosephine · 04/12/2017 06:42

Always tinsel. Wound quite close to the trunk (so away from baubles), thick stuff at the bottom, getting a bit thinner as you get to the top of the tree. My baubles are lots of different colours so I stick to one colour of tinsel to draw it all in together.

SoGoodToBeBackHomeAgain · 04/12/2017 06:45

Have read the word tinsel so often, it no longer seems like a real word now! Xmas Smile

pictish · 04/12/2017 06:45

I had this debate with dh for a long time. I don't like tinsel, he says it's essential. In the end the kids chipped in and said yes to tinsel so we have it. I'm not keen but there we have it.

afishnotabird · 04/12/2017 06:46

If DH is a rogue tinsler, I would take control of the situation by doing tinsel myself and doing it as nice as possible, rather than risk a surprise tinsling in the night.

KittyB52 · 04/12/2017 06:50

I have seen lots of beautiful trees on Facebook, all colour coordinated and tinsel-free. However, that is not my style at all, and we will be going with full on tinsel and mismatched decorations, including some that my Nan bought, some I made as a child (with the occasional missing sequin) and a glittery dinosaur I made a few years ago. Grin

OliviaBenson · 04/12/2017 06:54

I'm a no tinsel person. But if your DH is adamant, you should concede but decorate it yourself- don't let him add to the tree while you are working. That first tree is monstrous. Your DH clearly has no clue.

LTB!Xmas Grin

bimbobaggins · 04/12/2017 07:00

I don’t like tinsel on my tree but have seen some nice trees with tinsel it’s just not my preference.
Why don’t you decorate a half each and he can have tinsel on his half
