Please help me!

We have decided that we're going to have a real tree this year! Yay!! However... we need help to settle a debate.. this happens every bloody year!

Tinsel on the tree or not? I say not, we never had it when growing up it just doesn't feel right.. DH is adamant tinsel only goes on the tree and they always had tinsel on the tree as a child.. his Mum disputes this fact and her tree is always beautiful and tinsel free Hmm

I did the tree beautifully last year with no tinsel, went out for a night shift and he covered it in tinsel...

I've attached pictures of our first tree together which he did himself and is atrocious and his mums to prove there's no tinsel!

TLDR- tinsel on tree yes or no?

there's something lovely and nostalgic (for me) about trees covered in multi-coloured lights and tinsel. Takes me right back to my 80's childhood where Christmas was one big tack-fest!

Exactly! Grin Our plastic tree was dragged out of the shed every year and draped in multicoloured tinsel, lights, and a random collection of plastic baubles & homemade ornaments. Nobody was even attempting ‘classy’!

White lights, red tinsel, 30+ years worth of collected decorations.

Liquidrevolution we have a silver version of that but it's at least 12 years old and has lost a lot of its stars. I would love to get some more but never see it. Where did you get yours from?

No tinsel anywhere!!!! Hate the stuff. I've banned coloured lights too.

Not a fan of tinsel on trees. But if you can get it to hang in swags from the v tips of the branches horizontally , it can look good. I was in a hotel at the weekend where this was successfully done.

No tinsel. But I might try the winding it up the trunk thing.

I prefer strings of bells etc.

I think tinsel is good. And personally I find the matchy-matchy, glam trees a bit naff. I'm sure that the classier element would go for a much more higgledy piggledy mish-mash of tinsel and non-matching old decorations.

Yes to tinsel, as much as you can get on. If you can still see tree when you think you have finished decorating then you are mistaken and need to get more tinsel to fill in the gaps Wink

A tinsel-less tree is like a salad with no lettuce.

Kirstie Allsopp favours tinsel. You might not like her but common and tacky she ain’t. I am firmly in the YES to tinsel camp. I loathe colour co-ordinated trees.

That settles it. ALWAYS do the opposite of whatever Kirsty says Wink

I asked this upthread and 'nobdie' answered; but what on earth does tinsel smell of - what is it supposed to smell of? Xmas Confused

I can't get over how miserable your tree is, sorry, I am a no to tinsel person but your tree is so bad it needed something. Do your tree nicely and no tinsel is required, decorate it with a handful of plain baubles and nothing else then tinsel will definitely help (lighthearted as no offense is intended but it's too bad to not tell you 😂)

No tinsel on my tree - I have a very long string of tiny coloured glass beads instead.

I also have another whole tree made out of tinsel though. This could be your solution to the eternal dilemma

We have tinsel

Plus coloured lights and a mishmash of 25 years of random ornaments. We’ve always taken the kids to choose a couple of new tree ornaments every Christmas and they all get thrown on.

Classy it ain’t Grin

I'm going to have to go round and sniff tinsel, aren't I?! Not sure where I'll find any though 🎄

My tree always has tinsel - I love it!! I don't like the way Christmas trees look without it...bare and a little miserable. Tinsel makes the tree sparkle.
