Please help me!

We have decided that we're going to have a real tree this year! Yay!! However... we need help to settle a debate.. this happens every bloody year!

Tinsel on the tree or not? I say not, we never had it when growing up it just doesn't feel right.. DH is adamant tinsel only goes on the tree and they always had tinsel on the tree as a child.. his Mum disputes this fact and her tree is always beautiful and tinsel free Hmm

I did the tree beautifully last year with no tinsel, went out for a night shift and he covered it in tinsel...

I've attached pictures of our first tree together which he did himself and is atrocious and his mums to prove there's no tinsel!

TLDR- tinsel on tree yes or no?

No to tinsel!

randomsabreuse · 04/12/2017 07:10

You need super skinny tinsel then the proportions work so much better! Always tinsel but only the skinny stuff very few places sell!

KingscoteStaff · 04/12/2017 07:13

Tinsel on the bannisters.
Decorations, lights and strings of gilded popcorn on the tree.
(I have teenagers who feel very strongly about this...

APipkinOfPepper · 04/12/2017 07:16

Could you compromise on lametta? Still has the twinkly sparkles tinsel look but less heavy? We don’t do tinsel on the tree - round the banister and in the children’s rooms in this house!

mumof2sarah · 04/12/2017 07:18

No tinsel here either, I do go for big bauble that are placed inside on branches rather than hung on them to add a bit of depth though. Then just normal decorating x

Kitsharrington · 04/12/2017 07:19

Just lights and baubles here. No tinsel.

BoomBoomsCousin · 04/12/2017 07:23

Tinsel goes on the tree and only on the tree (although use as a halo for school nativity is acceptable). It does not belong on mantle pieces and hand rails and around windows. Your DH is holding the line and deserves extra mince pies in the face of such a concerted attack on true Christmas tradition from you and his DM Shock

Bluntness100 · 04/12/2017 07:23

I didn’t know folks didn’t use tinsel on the tree either!

Yes, we do it here too, but not like yours, the tinsel is placed very far back closer to the trunk, it’s not obtrusive or in your face.

Could you try that as a compromise? The tinsel goes on first and quite far back, then you do the baubles.

NataliaOsipova · 04/12/2017 07:23

Tinsel? No, no, no.

SoupDragon · 04/12/2017 07:26

If I use tinsel on the tree, I tuck it right in near the trunk where it just catches the lights and sparkles.

For the last few years I've used a sort of curly silve wrapped wire with stars on it though. It wraps in large curls around the tree.

SundayLunchHappy · 04/12/2017 07:28

I grew up in a non tinsel household (Dutch if that makes a difference) but dh grew up in a tinsel household. I plan, bake, buy, make and cook Christmas, therefore I win Grin

feska5 · 04/12/2017 07:32

It’s a no from me!

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 04/12/2017 07:35

Yes to tinsel! But I put it on the tree before the baubles. So it's more 'background'.

FlouncyDoves · 04/12/2017 07:35

No tinsel. Tacky, gaudy and totally unnecessary.

White lights only too.

Clutterbugsmum · 04/12/2017 07:44

No tinsel here I hate it, it always look to big especially now it seems to be a wider then it used to be. I do however use the foil strands over the tree.

justilou1 · 04/12/2017 07:45

I loathe tinsel

dementedpixie · 04/12/2017 07:59

This was ours last year. Has black and silver tinsel

PanPanPanPing · 04/12/2017 08:08

No tinsel for me either.

But I'm intrigued to know what tinsel smells like Xmas Confused

Ninabean17 · 04/12/2017 08:12

We cover everything in tinsel, we love it. It's on the tree, around the tops of picture frames, on our hand rail up the stairs, but have to agree with pp your one looks a bit thrown together. If you're going to put it on the tree you need a lot of it.

EmilyChambers79 · 04/12/2017 08:19

Love the smell of tinsel. Definitely tinsel on a tree. I don't like those plastic strings of beads you get for trees though

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 04/12/2017 09:06

No, no tinsel on the tree. It looks really trashy!

anyoldname76 · 04/12/2017 09:11

You'd hate my tree, its got multicoloured lights, too many baubles, beads, tinsel and lametta, its like a 70s throwback, plus its got a light up colour changing star on the top [grin

HuskyMcClusky · 04/12/2017 09:12

^ I would love it Grin

RosesInTheHospital · 04/12/2017 09:14

Yes to tinsel. On the tree, round the picture frames, round the tv.
My tree looks like a multicoloured Christmas rainbow of sparkles, glittery bits, multicoloured twinkly lights, a million baubles. Every branch has two baubles. It’s chaos. And beautiful.

Robinkitty · 04/12/2017 09:18

We have tinsel on our tree but only the big fluffy tinsel. It smells of Christmas
