Please help me!

We have decided that we're going to have a real tree this year! Yay!! However... we need help to settle a debate.. this happens every bloody year!

Tinsel on the tree or not? I say not, we never had it when growing up it just doesn't feel right.. DH is adamant tinsel only goes on the tree and they always had tinsel on the tree as a child.. his Mum disputes this fact and her tree is always beautiful and tinsel free Hmm

I did the tree beautifully last year with no tinsel, went out for a night shift and he covered it in tinsel...

I've attached pictures of our first tree together which he did himself and is atrocious and his mums to prove there's no tinsel!

TLDR- tinsel on tree yes or no?

Tinsel is traditional and we like traditions at Christmas in our house.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 05/12/2017 20:18

It's traditional for you. We like traditions at Christmas in our house too, but tinsel is thankfully not one of them.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 05/12/2017 20:24

Personally think tinsel looks tacky - sorry

But otherwise adorning a live tree with glittery shite is...tasteful?

Of course it's tacky! That's why it fits right in with the entire glitter-fest of gratuitous spending on unnecessary crap that marks the birth of Jesus.

Lizzy1978 · 05/12/2017 20:56

I hate tinsel, and coloured lights, and plastic tat. My partner produced his own tree last year 😂. I made tasteful, ceramic, handpainted decorations with the kids last year......they refused to put them on my tree 😂

TimrousBeastie · 05/12/2017 21:17

Im luckily allergic to the stuff :) i have beads and various decorations on mine

KnightsOfCydonia · 05/12/2017 21:26

I'm not a fan of tinsel, I do wrap ribbon around my tree which I think serves a similar purpose to tinsel but IMO looks nicer.
I've attached a pic of my tree with ribbon. Xmas Grin

Tinsel wrapped round the lights before they go on the tree gives you more twinkle.

Ladymadness · 05/12/2017 21:35

Knights
Your tree is amazing Xmas Shock I may have to try that next year.

JosieJasper · 05/12/2017 21:39

Several years ago we all got a bit prissy (I include myself here) and decided coloured lights were tacky they had to be white, the tree had to be fully coordinated and there was to be no tinsel in sight! Then people realised Christmas was all about fun and being OTT so we can all do what we bloody well like. Merry Christmas 🎄 😜

londonmummy1966 · 05/12/2017 21:46

Tinsel is the spawn of the devil.... it's sole purpose is to adorn the heads of little angels - in the case of my two it is the spawn of the devil adorning the devil's spawn....

Can you tell they have been absolutely awful this evening? Gin

KatyaZamolodchikova · 05/12/2017 21:50

TimrousBeastie I’m also allergic to tinsel! Weird, I’ve never known anyone else be allergic but now there’s two of us it’s definitely A Thing.

On the basis it is itchy swelling hell to me it is absolutely banned from the house.

caringcarer · 05/12/2017 22:06

I let kids put tinsel on bottom branches because they like it and keep top branches for my hand blown glass baubles.

I put tinsel on the tree but ours is artificial so when building it I put a layer of tinsel between the branches so it looks like it's inside the tree I then tease bits out towards the edges to catch the light. It's a great way to fill the gaps you get on an artificial tree makes it look so much fuller.

grannieali · 05/12/2017 23:38

Life is too short for such petty disputes. Are you more interested in visitors admiring your tasteful tree or letting husband and children decorate it any way they like. You can always even outthe baubles when they are not there. They won't notice.

mumindoghouse · 06/12/2017 00:12

Not personally into tinsel. DSx2 are. We have tinsel. Such is life

abouttimeforanotherone · 06/12/2017 00:26

Tinsel or not, I prefer artificial trees as I don't much like the idea of cutting down living trees. Funny really, because I know they are grown as a crop, and all the holly and mistletoe etc doesn't bother me in the same way at all.

LondonLassInTheCountry · 06/12/2017 00:29

They are completly different trees...
You cant compare.

Imo:
Real trees, no tinsel.
Fake tree, Tinsel

EB123 · 06/12/2017 00:37

We have been a no tinsel on the tree household but this year I think I might get some.

Last year DH and I picked up a load of the naff ceiling decorations like our parents put up in the 80's. We decorated our ceilings one night and the kids absolutely loved it and have been asking about them again this year.

Bobbi73 · 06/12/2017 01:33

We have two small children who love to decorate the tree so tinsel or no tinsel it looks like an explosion of Christmas tat. I'm sure one day in the future I can have an elegant, tastefully decorated tree but for now, I'm loving the madness.

Italiangreyhound · 06/12/2017 01:41

We have, and have always had, tinsel on the tree.

mrshectic · 06/12/2017 01:50

I don't particularly like tinsel, but I do put some on the tree.....I alternate it with the tiny silver ball ones.

However....I also tuck it in a bit, why on earth do people drape it all around the edge?! Xmas Shock That does look awful (imho)!!

berni140 · 06/12/2017 06:48

Tinsel and tackiness is totally for the kids but if it's not your thing that's fine too! The question is which one of you wants it more? I.e. If it disgusts you beyond belief or if he feels he's missing out on something that was a huge part of his childhood, then the other should just go with it, sad it is the season of goodwill!!!

berni140 · 06/12/2017 06:49

I didn't mean 'sad'I meant 'as it is the season of goodwill!!!'
