I accidentally didn't pay in a shop today.

In mitigation (though I think it would count in a court), I'm highly stressed.

So I went through the self scan thing and it kept asking for approval because I was buying paracetamol. I paid no heed, cashier came and scanned them for me. Then I needed a bag, So she had to do that for me too. Last was the machine telling there was something undedected on the belt. I walked out and ignored the machine because it is forever going on at me.

Got to bus-stop, checked for wallet. Eh. I didn't have it. So if I had been caught doing this stressful thing, it's not as if I forgot to pay, (which I did) as I didn't even have the means to pay. They'd have thought it was pure theft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wallet is here at home. It was only £4, but Jesus I need to recover my senses.

If you were you wouldn't be rattling on about the law

Well I take it back the OP should carry on doing what she's doing until she eventually gets caught. OP admits this isn't the first time it's happened, she's even nearly walked out without paying when she was at a proper cash till.

Not paying is breaking the law otherwise we could all walk into shops and take what we want and I'm sure find some reason for doing so or say it was an accident, couldn't we.

Yes, that post really makes you appear caring and not massively patronising. NOT

If I walk out of somewhere having made an honest mistake I feel under no obligation to go back. The biggest ticket items were in a well known department store where I was undercharged for a total of over £300 on two items on two separate occasions. I genuinely did not realise until I got home and checked my receipts.

On another occasion I was undercharged about £30 for one item on a spend of over £500 at a chain garden centre. The cashier failed to ring it up. Again I failed to return.

There have been many smaller undercharges that I've also not gone back for but I took pity on a teenager in his dad's shop who gave me too much change because it was clearly his first day and he couldn't add up.

I always check my receipts and have had no compunction about going back when over charged. That's just me.

Well let's hope the OP never gets caught hey.

I'm out.

Brandbrandbrandy · 04/12/2017 20:16

limited your examples are different though. They were the mistakes of the shop and cashier.

The OP walked out without paying. But she walks around in a daze half the time so that’s ok apparently.

limitedperiodonly · 04/12/2017 20:25

Not really. I could and should go back to repay if I was being honest. I would if they'd overcharged me and if it cost too much to return in person I'd take it up with a call to customer services or on twitter if I didn't get what I wanted.

This happened to me once. A branch of a multiple where I had never been before and was not likely to go again.I put some money, a bit more than the amount concerned, in a collection box for a charity I like and felt that honour was satisfied.

I still have terrible guilt from 45 years ago when I sat in my classroom and realised that the packet of extra strong mints in my hand hadn't been paid for. I'd paid for my copy of Jackie but not the mints. A whole 3p and I still the police will come one day 😂😂😂😂

Stanislas · 04/12/2017 20:44

I think £4 is a lot.

VileyRose · 04/12/2017 21:00

I wouldn't go back over £4 this time but I would check harder in future.

Sedation affects your memory. It's the reason I didn't have it for a procedure a couple of years ago (had young DS to look after) so it's probably just that. IIRC the effects last around 24 hours.

I went through a spell of saying the wrong word a while ago. I knew what I wanted to say in my head but the wrong word popped out my mouth! I put it down to stress and it did go away. Embarrassing to call my boss the wrong name though!
