Neighbors baby wakes me up

Hi, it is early Saturday morning and I am up again because the neighbors baby woke me up again. He is around 1.5 and still wakes up at least two times each night and gets up at 6. We are in terraced house and my bedroom is next to his nursery. He cries for them really loud, more like screams which is followed by them running to him and then some noisy shuffling. In themorning they seem to let him play in his cot for about 30mins and I can hear that, so cant go to back to sleep. He then runs around the bedrooms babling and they are talking loud and it is just very noisy. So my question is what can I do? AIBU to complain to someone? Who?

I don't really know what you want them to do? You can't tell a toddler not to wake up?! I get that it must be really annoying but I'm just thinking I doubt they appreciate getting woken up either, must be hard to have a 1.5 year old still waking up twice at night.

Heckneck · 02/12/2017 08:01

YABU. Your options: Move to a detached house. Or, buy ear plugs. He's still young. I'm assuming you've not got young children or any at all? Absolutely noone you can report it to that will take you seriously I'm afraid.

BrawneLamia · 02/12/2017 08:01

I don't think there is much you can do unfortunately - I imagine the parents are doing everything they can to stop the baby waking up. Earplugs?

NewtsSuitcase · 02/12/2017 08:01

Nothing. They have a baby, be reasonable.

Move your bedroom? If you're in a terraced house presumably you have more than one.

MrsScareface2 · 02/12/2017 08:03

Firstly you could have a quiet word with them that their dc keeps you awake/could they reposition his bed/cot?
Other than that move? Not to sound harsh but what your hearing is very normal family life noise they are not making this noise to make your life difficult. It's hardly a all night base banging rave

Chaosofcalm · 02/12/2017 08:04

You said yourself as soon as he cries and therefore as soon as he is very loud they run to get him and stop the loud noise.

Smashpumpkin · 02/12/2017 08:04

If you can I would move to the other side of the house or as another poster said get some earplugs.
He is still only a baby and I’m sure the parents would not appreciate you complaining!

NNchangedforthis · 02/12/2017 08:05

Just talk to them - I’m sure they can easily have a word with the baby and get him to stop waking and sleep a bit longer Hmm

RochelleGoyle · 02/12/2017 08:05

YABU.

ICanNeverThinkOfAGoodUsrname · 02/12/2017 08:05

Who would you complain to and how would your complaint go?...Hello, next doors baby is waking up and crying and although parents go to soothe baby it still does it each night?!

I'm sorry but I just can't see what the parents could do other than what they're already doing. The noises you're describing are normal noises.

If it's affecting your life that much then terraced or semi detached living isn't for you.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 02/12/2017 08:05

Move bedroom or your bed?
Earplugs?
Move house?
I get that it is very annoying.
The walls must be very thin.
I'm not sure that complaining to them will do any good.. they are obviously already aware as they are attending to the child. At that age he isn't going to be able to be told to be quiet and obey (if only!).

IHATEPeppaPig · 02/12/2017 08:05

Believe me they are probably equally annoyed about the noise! I know how horrid it is when you are woken up and how frustrating it is when you could actually get a good nights sleep but it does sound like they are doing everything they can. It would be classed as reasonable noise so you couldn't report to council- Ear plugs? Move bedrooms?

Spartaca · 02/12/2017 08:07

Sadly, that's what babies do. I'm not sure what your proposed solution is? Apart from moving him/the cot which might have limited effect, but might be worth an ask.

Ear plugs or move rooms?

Mammyloveswine · 02/12/2017 08:09

What a ridiculous post! Babies cry... get over it and buy some earplugs! If my neighbour complsined about my baby crying id tell them to piss off!

AfterSchoolWorry · 02/12/2017 08:11

Get the wall sound proofed and get ear plugs.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 02/12/2017 08:12

Nothing you can do except reposition your bed or move rooms.
They are attending to him straight away so there's nothing more they can do.
It is annoying for you, but he won't be this small forever. Is it really worth risking the relationship with your neighbours for years to come over a short term problem?

user1493413286 · 02/12/2017 08:13

I get that it’s annoying but you also don’t know if any of your noise effects them. My neighbour makes quite a lot of noise which disturbs my baby but i’d never say anything as my baby probably wakes him.
I’d try earplugs

Ecureuil · 02/12/2017 08:13

So the baby cries loudly and they immediately rush to soothe him?
What else do you think they could do?
When DD2 was born we lived in a semi. With a newborn and a non sleeping nearly 2 year old I felt so sorry for my poor neighbour. I was already doing everything I could to stop them waking/making noise in the night (I wasn’t a massive fan of being woken up either), but there was only so much I could do. I spoke to him about it and he just said ‘ah that’s what young children do, I miss mine being that small. Don’t worry yourself about it’.
We live in a detached house now so thankfully don’t disturb anyone!

CharlieAustinsMagicHat · 02/12/2017 08:13

I believe the favoured response is to log it with 101.

TheSunIsFar · 02/12/2017 08:14

Get earplugs! Hmm

NewtsSuitcase · 02/12/2017 08:14

Getting the wall soundproofed is actually a good idea. I have a friend who has done this with loud teenagers rooms and reports that it has made a difference (Not completely since sound still travels through doors etc but enough to have made it worthwhile)

JaneEyre70 · 02/12/2017 08:16

Leave a fan running in your bedroom or a radio on low. It distracts your hearing from other noise. It's just a phase and will get better. Until they have another..............

SingingSeuss · 02/12/2017 08:19

He's a child. This is what they do. You have to either suck it up or move I'm afraid, sorry op.

ChocolateCakeandTeaPlease · 02/12/2017 08:20

We had a similar issue and eventually moved. Not 100% because of the baby noise but that was a factor in why we didn't stay there. We rented the house and were looking to buy. The landlord offered us the opportunity to buy the house but I knew I wouldn't be able to stand the noise from next door so we didn't buy it.

It's an unfortunate part of living in a terraced house I'm afraid but I do get why you're unhappy. I found it massively stressful and annoying (although I have a real 'thing' about noise). I now have my own DC and you get totally used to the night waking and crying but preDC I found it really hard to hear.

Nanna50 · 02/12/2017 08:20

This is normal life noise, babies, toddlers, kids playing, teenagers and music etc. Who are you going to complain to and what do you want them to do?

The parents are probably already anxious enough with lack of sleep and running back and forwards without you adding to the mix.

How thin are your walls? You need good earplugs or move to another room or put furniture against the wall to help dull the noise.
