I organised our works secret santa. All names dished out except one lonely piece of paper in the jar. The person it is to be given to has been off ill for 2 weeks. In my act of being nice, I was thinking if colleague isn't around for when we exchange, should i buy an extra gift so that no-one goes without.

I sneaked a look at the paper and it's only bloody me!

So I organise the works do, the secret santa and get no sodding gift....

NB. Last year someone else organised the secret santa and someone got 2 gifts and I got none... so I might be being a bit sensitive over a £5 gift lol

Well presumably someone has picked out the name of the person who is off sick. So the person off sick is going to receive a gift without buying. one. Is this person likely to return to work? If not then your name should be substituted for theirs.

Workplace Secret Santas are notorious for this! The last one I was involved in organising, I opted out for this very reason. It was horrible to see someone going without a gift so I gave her something myself. Another time, I went all out to get a lovely gift for someone and got the crappiest, cheapest, fridge magnet back! You just have to take it on the chin. Maybe see it like a raffle.

Of course you can get yourself a gift! Put the name you picked into the jar for the ill person to pick if they get back in time, otherwise put in a token present for their recipient, knowing that you are guaranteed something lovely from Secret Santa for once!

In future have an organiser who knows who is getting for who, so they can sort out probs like people going off. If you knew who had the sick colleague you could ask them to get for you instead. Alternatively ring sick colleague and ask ìf they still want to participate?

Buy something amazing for yourself and ooh and ahh with surprise.
