To be surprised that M&S has a section on their website for Modest Clothing?

here

What's that all about then? Why does it warrant its own category?

Many religious women describe their dress as "modest". Why shout them down?

stealthemoon · 29/11/2017 21:32

All I see is M&S giving Muslim women to experiment different styles and latest trends

MsHarry · 29/11/2017 21:33

Call it Muslim then! Modest is the wrong word to use in Britain.

JanetStWalker · 29/11/2017 21:35

YouTube keeps suggesting I watch this American woman, she has an entire series based on her modest outfits. She's grimly fascinating but seems happy enough.

YoloSwaggins · 29/11/2017 21:36

Call it Muslim then!

I can just imagine the bigoted Daily Mail articles that would ensue from that....

MsHarry · 29/11/2017 21:36

Who cares what The DFail think?

YoloSwaggins · 29/11/2017 21:37

Too many people in this country, unfortunately

YoloSwaggins · 29/11/2017 21:38

I remember the Islamophobia that kicked off when Nike started selling a hijab

MsHarry · 29/11/2017 21:39

So let’s offend 50% of the population instead!

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 29/11/2017 21:40

Yes there is modest clothing for men as well
Not on the M&S site there isn't. Which begs the question, why is there a need for a specific section for women but not for men? Are women so thick they're unable to find long skirts, high necked jumpers and loose blouses unless they're in a special "modest" section?

I have no issues with the term modest but I LOVE the floral skirt Grin

noeffingidea · 29/11/2017 22:02

MsHarry doubt very much it's offending 50% of the population. The vast majority most likely won't care.
Just like the mumsnet campaigns about 'padded bras' for 8 year olds and all the rest of it. Most people just aren't bothered about it.

YoloSwaggins · 29/11/2017 22:08

@noeffingidea, yep, more like 5%.

I just can't bring myself to be offended no matter how hard I try.

crunchermuncher · 29/11/2017 22:14

MsHarry plenty of regions require modest dress. It's not only Muslims .

FreckledFrog · 29/11/2017 22:17

It seems good that they put the outfits together and you can pick and choose what you go for. I for one like it and have no problem with so I would say YABU

Eltonjohnssyrup · 29/11/2017 22:26

It's not just Muslims. My son goes to school with a lot of Christian refugees from the ME. They also dress like this and are often mistaken for Muslims. Also a fairly large number of Orthodox Jewish women.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 29/11/2017 22:27

Many religious women describe their dress as "modest". Why shout them down?

Because they have alternative ways of expressing themselves which don't carry an implied judgement of other women.

DJBaggySmalls · 29/11/2017 22:29

Romany women also have to dress modestly in female clothing, and that includes no trousers or leggings.

Its the term 'modest' thats the problem, not the style of dress or who its for.

Flowerfae · 29/11/2017 23:13

They need to get someone who knows about fashion to sort those 'outfits' out . Just because someone wants to dress modestly, doesn't mean they want to dress like someones granny.

Fekko · 29/11/2017 23:18

My grandma was rather - errrr, 'individual' in her dress sense.

The cut may have been modest (well she was born pre ww1) but the fabric, colours, patterns and accessories were definitely 'statement' 😁.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 29/11/2017 23:20

Modest absolutely is a fashion term, like grunge, vintage, boho, luxe. It is also increasingly mainstream; lots of celebs pictured on the red carpet in covered up dowdy dresses. Look at any upmarket brand's latest collection; plenty of modest stuff.

Fekko · 29/11/2017 23:20

Granny-chic?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 29/11/2017 23:29

No it's not. Because all of those labels are neutral and pass no value judgement on those who wear it or those who do.

To put it a different way; we could label non-modest clothing as 'progressive' women's clothing. But if we did half the people on here saying 'Oh it's just a fashion name' would be screaming in offence that implied that modest clothing was somehow backwards or regressive and whinging about how racist and prejudiced it was. But when the judgement and snide implications go the other way apparently that's fine.
