Aibu to ask you where you would live with my £20 million budget?

So I've got 20 million in (imaginary) pounds. Where would you live for this and in what? I'm only after one home as I find having a home in each continent discombobulating.

I'd be saviour Barbie. I'd go to Barbuda or another place that's had a hard time, and spend most of the money on reconstruction and a million or two on a nice place for me. That way I get a lovely house, somewhere gorgeous, but I don't have to agonise about colonialism (much).

Kursk · 28/11/2017 14:38

I would buy 600 acres in northern Canada/Alaska. Build a log cabin and off grid small holding miles from the nearest human.

SilverySurfer · 28/11/2017 14:40

I would move back to London, £20m is just enough to buy a bijou penthouse in Chelsea.

Why don't you think about solving some real problems in the world instead of fantasizing about your imaginary lottery win?

So worthy - I bet the sackcloth and ashes you are wearing are terribly scratchy and you must get bored with your daily ration of gruel and a stale crust Grin

House in Edinburgh. Flat in Paris. Cottage on Orkney or Shetland.

I have modest tastes and love in the Midlands. However would use some of the change to buy a pool ace by the coast in Wales and an old French Boise in the South of France and a holiday cottage in Lanzarote

Who shat on chrys' face? Hmm

Pigflewpast · 28/11/2017 15:10

alpha traffic is a nightmare round there, you'd better get a helicopter too

EmilyChambers79 · 28/11/2017 15:12

I'd buy one of the houses at the top of my road, knock it down and rebuild the exact house we want with the exact rooms require.

A holiday home somewhere warm and a bit trashy, maybe Benidorm or Tenerife.

I'd also like a small place in the States so we could visit more than twice a year. Maybe in Boston. Or New Jersey.

(Sometimes I like sitting and drawing my fantasy home floor plans)

Strokethefurrywall · 28/11/2017 15:17

Come join me in the Cayman Islands!

Home on the beach for a couple of million;
Apartment in Manhattan;
Ski cabin in Breckenridge

Done and done Grin

BlueButTrue · 28/11/2017 16:03

You see, I'd love to say I'd purchase a very spacious cottage type property in the countryside but these places never have good takeaway options for delivery Envy

Someone help me solve the dilemma.

As for the holiday home, somewhere like Tenerife as a previous poster suggested. I love relaxed trashy/relaxed, I do Grin

bogofeternalstench · 28/11/2017 16:15

I couldn't immediately find a seaside property I like so I'll settle for this. www.knightfrank.co.uk/properties/residential/for-sale/chagford-newton-abbot-devon-tq13/exe140374
I'll live off the rest. :)

TheWhyteRoseShallRiseAgain · 28/11/2017 16:15

First thought was a tropical island but on reflection try to convince English heritage to sell Middleham castle for very little money and spend the rest doing it back up, thus creating more income but reserving part to live in.

Chrys ever heard of having a bit of fun and not trolling every single post on MN?

Goldenhandshake · 28/11/2017 16:19

I'd stay in the UK, but have a large converted barn in the country side, designed to my exact specifications. then I would holiday three or 4 times in year all over the world.

FlouncyDoves · 28/11/2017 16:24

I’m not telling you - it might happen, and then you’d be there too.

LakieLady · 28/11/2017 16:26

I'd have a country estate in Cornwall, ideally on the Lizard or West Penwith, and a holiday place in SW France, probably Gascony. I've always fancied having enough land to take the dogs for a decent walk without ever leaving my own property.

We'd buy MIL's council house for her, so she never has to leave her beloved garden (utterly beautiful and the results of a 56 year labour of love) and extend the house so she can have live-in help if she needs it as she gets older.

mustbemad17 · 28/11/2017 16:26

Nice little cottage up north somewhere with shit loads of land. As long as the cottage is cosy the focus would be on the land; luxury boarding kennels with heating etc, plus 10 kennels for rescue EB. And stables, and some space for pigs & goats & horses. Easy with £20m

munkynutts · 28/11/2017 16:27

Loft in Manhattan, Georgian townhouse in London, villa in Provence, small pied à terre in Paris and then rambling mansion in Yorkshire would do me

Bonelessbanquet · 28/11/2017 16:29

I’d live about 20 mins away from my house, in a beautiful house that I can’t stop looking at Blush isn’t that much bigger inside than my current house, 2&3 bedroom slightly bigger but the outdoor space and views are amazing! On the market for 450k.

LakieLady · 28/11/2017 16:29

Oooh, the Chagford house is lovely Bogof. I do love a stone mullion or 10.

Mind, my dad was born in this house. Smile

Emily7708 · 28/11/2017 17:57

I would buy a huge villa in Barbados - it’s a longstanding dream of mine to retire there. Mind you the dream is fast becoming to be able to retire at all!

Beerwench · 28/11/2017 17:59

Well, I'd like an estate with main house and then a few cottages on the property and lots and lots of land.
I'd start a free riding school for anyone who was horse mad but couldn't have lessons for whatever reason. It'd be work for rides, so they learn how to look after a horse properly too. I'd also take older horses that I so sadly see for sale because they've outlived their usefulness. I'd have a livery business too.
But most of all I want a dishwasher, an aga and a big scrubbed farmhouse kitchen table in my kitchen and an open fire in my lounge. And a boot room, where the dogs have plush beds and heating and can go when they're covered in mud to dry off.
My 20mil isn't going to last long is it?! Grin
