to not understand the Pandora obsession?

MycatsaPirate · 27/11/2017 20:23

Just that really!

A neighbour of ours is obsessed with it, every Christmas/birthday/mother's day she is constantly tagging her husband on fb with endless Pandora ads saying 'hint hint hubby!'. She has loads of it. And so does one of my DSD's.

Why spend so much money on stuff that so many other people are also wearing?

Each to their own but I don't get it. And surely it will be worth nothing in a few years time?

I'm not overly bothered about jewellery, I wear my engagement ring (which was made specifically for me) and a pair of pretty plain white gold earrings every day .

Would just love to know why Pandora is so popular? And why some people want the entire collection?

My Pandora bracelet holds meaning and memories!!
Oldest ds buys the Christmas ones, makes me think of each lovely Christmas day we shared!! A musical note for all the concerts dd and I have been to, the present one from my 40th.
I got the pram off dh when ds was born, I have a cat +dog charm to remind me of pets!! I chose all the charms myself, bought from loved ones though! My life is a story told through my bracelet really!! When I am in a box I hope the dc keep it to remember our lovely times together!!

AlmaSedgewick · 27/11/2017 20:48

Your thread is snobby. There's no point to it other than to encourage people to pile in and slate a brand (that is presumably causing you no distress in your life). Lots of people like it, you don't. Good for you and your refined superior taste.

I have a pair of earrings from Pandora that were given to me by a friend. They are rose gold and really pretty. You wouldn't have a clue where they were from if I didn't tell you.

Hulababy · 27/11/2017 20:48

Nothing to understand really is there? Some people like them, others prefer something else. Thats all there is to it! Nothing more.

I have a range of different types of jewellery which I wear at different times. I do have a simple silver Pandora bracelet. I have some charms on it from holidays - its the only time I buy a charm, on holiday and if I can find one I will buy a charm that is either specific to that location or which reminds me of that location. I do have a couple of others which other people have bought for specific reasons and a charity one. But the main part it just has my travel charms on. As I said, its just one type of jewellery I have. Its not something I crave and obsess over, any more than any of the other stuff I have - cheap or expensive.

Lethaldrizzle · 27/11/2017 20:51

But op you are basically saying your taste in jewellery is superior to those who like Pandora! That is a touch judgemental

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 27/11/2017 20:51

Well yes, obviously, but a tenth half of MN threads would disappear if you stop people talking about pointless stuff we like and don't like. Grin

NatMatCat · 27/11/2017 20:52

People like to collect stuff and it's priced at a level that makes it possible to get a piece for every birthday. They've managed to market fashion jewellery as a luxury product. It's attainable in a way fine jewellery isn't but it's packaged, sold and marketed in the same way.

MakeMisogynyAHateCrime · 27/11/2017 20:53

It's collectible Elizabeth Duke.

My mum bought me and my daughter a Pandora 2 years ago and since then we’ve been filling our bracelets with charms that really mean something to us - not just ‘pretty’ but straight away a memory. I wear my bracelet every single, my daughter doesn’t - each to their own. At no point did my mum or do I think of its value in a few years time - I’ve never thought like that about any piece of jewellery.

YoloSwaggins · 27/11/2017 20:58

I suppose it's like Match Attax for middle-aged women and the plain bracelet doesn't make too much sense on its own.

Hahahahaha!

I think they are really tacky and is just another lame trend, like those tops with the shoulders missing.

I hate bracelets in general though because they clunk again desks/get caught on cardigans/get in the way.

wildbhoysmama · 27/11/2017 20:58

Lots of incredibly bothered people on here about something which doesn't concern them, particularly since they don't like it. I don't like obvious make-up, short skirts, low-cut tops, shirts, tight dresses, or anything which makes me look like my mother, but i don't feel free to comment on others who like these things. If they feel good, brilliant. What happened to the sisterhood?
I like my Pandora bracelet- and to the PP who said it's when people can't be bothered to think of another gift, not true here, i asked for 3 new charms for my.birthday last week. Me and the kids look and choose together. It's not about what it's worth, it's the fact that every charm has a memory.
Each to their own. I wouldn't be rude about your choices.

MycatsaPirate · 27/11/2017 20:59

I'm not saying that at all lethal I'm saying I don't understand the obsession with wanting to buy the whole range! Surely no one needs an entire range of jewellery from one place?

But as natmatcat has just pointed out, it's affordable and some see it as collectable so at least one person has bothered to explain it to me!

I also like that tinselistacky has a bracelet that holds all her memories and actually means something to her. That's really nice and reminds me of my Auntie Jean who had a traditional charm bracelet and as a child would let me play with it and look at all the charms. Man, that thing weighed a ton! She must have been very strong :o

silvia That did make me laugh. I hope you do a gritted teeth smile at each other!

Here we go, the Pandora snobs are out in force. The beads on my bangle all mean something to me and I don’t care they are worthless second hand, they haven’t been bought for me to sell!

YoloSwaggins · 27/11/2017 21:00

Lots of incredibly bothered people on here about something which doesn't concern them,

THIS IS LITERALLY THE FUCKING POINT OF AIBU

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 27/11/2017 21:00

tagging her husband on fb with endless Pandora ads saying 'hint hint hubby!'

Yuck. SIBU for saying that Grin

endehors · 27/11/2017 21:02

It's just so bland and ubiquitous. I can't understand the appeal, personally.

SandyBeachandtheDeckchairs · 27/11/2017 21:03

I have to say how much I admire wildboysmamas dignified response on this thread. Vive la difference no?

LizzieSiddal · 27/11/2017 21:04

My two teenage neices love Pandora and I usually buy them something from there for presents.

They are 14 and 15.

I think the quality is awful but each to their own.

Izzy24 · 27/11/2017 21:05

Pandora must have the most successful marketing strategy ever.

LizzieSiddal · 27/11/2017 21:05

*nieces

AlonsosLeftPinky · 27/11/2017 21:06

It's not about the worth of them. They're crap quality mass produced tat, so only a fool would expect there to be any value in them.

I just find it bizarre that half the female population of the country seemingly have the same bracelet with the same string of memories.

MycatsaPirate · 27/11/2017 21:07

Lizzie On the plus side, at least you have something to buy them through that awkward age. It's a nightmare buying for teens. My poor nephew is getting cash from me this year, apart from gaming he doesn't really do much else.

OP posts:
Nomoretears56 · 27/11/2017 21:08

Don't care what anyone thinks, I was bought one for a significant birthday by my children, they each also bought a charm to signify something special to each of them. I'm difficult to buy presents for so at Christmas and birthdays I get a lovely charm, it's now full and I'm thinking of asking for another bracelet to split the charms up.

LetBartletBeBartlet · 27/11/2017 21:10

You know its nearly Xmas when the queue barriers appear outside Pandora.

It reminds me of the Argos jewellery counters in the '90s.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 27/11/2017 21:11

It's an absolutely genius idea. Every time I walk past a Pandora shop it's bursting with people who are utterly relieved that they can buy a present without stretching their imaginations at all.

Very, very annoyingly, my kids were given one of those bracelets that tell the Christmas story in beads, years and years ago, when they were little and because we were into making our own jewellery at the time, we started making bracelets and necklaces with beads that told the story of a holiday or event or represented our family.

Wah! It should have been me! I should be the Pandora multi millionaire!
