Hi! So we can't agree and have decided to ask the people on mumsnet to help us out.

Two parents not a couple but good friends and co parents.

Five year old ds has a hobby exam next weekend. The problem is it clashes with his close friend's birthday party.

Parent A: he needs to learn about responsibility and commitment and letting him duck out sends a poor message so we choose the exam.

Parent B: he's five and it's not as if the exam will affect his career, let him have fun at the party.

Which would you choose?

We promise to abide by majority opinion.
Thanks!

Party! Smile

He's 5!!!

LizzieSiddal · 25/11/2017 21:10

In fact my dd did something v similar when she was 5. The ballet school owner had a hissy fit and said this could be one of the highlights of her life Hmm.

I thought fuck that, she’ll be having far more highlights that a sodding ballet exam, Grade 1. And she has! (She’s 27 now) do not sweat this stuff for a 5 year old!

Mustang27 · 25/11/2017 21:12

Party, he is 5 plenty of time for Exams. Is he aware he is missing the exam?

TeenTimesTwo · 25/11/2017 21:13

I would ask re exam:

  • when is the next taking opportunity
  • will it effect what he gets to do with the hobby (and thus his enjoyment) until he does take it

and decide based on that.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 25/11/2017 21:14

Party. Always party.
He's 5. Screw exams.

DJBaggySmalls · 25/11/2017 21:16

Party. The exam can be rescheduled but best friends cant.

Wanderwall · 25/11/2017 21:18

Party.

sirfredfredgeorge · 25/11/2017 21:19

Kids choice, with little suggestiveness from either parent.

I expect the party would normally win, and social interactions are likely more important than anything that is being examined at 5.

Ginslinger · 25/11/2017 21:19

I think he should go to the first thing that was agreed - there will always be parties

hollowtree · 25/11/2017 21:20

Party!

buckeejit · 25/11/2017 21:21

Depends how long the exam can be rescheduled to. And if he could take friend out for another birthday treat. I’d waver to exam tbh

fartyghost · 25/11/2017 21:22

When he's a bit older he's going to remember the party more than his judo grading (or whatever). He's not going to put the exam results on his CV so I say party.

Namow · 25/11/2017 21:23

Party, unless the exam is paid for or rescheduling now would inconvenience anyone else.

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 25/11/2017 21:23

He is 5. Are you seriously considering giving an exam priority?

I’m actually speechless!

AnachronisticCorpse · 25/11/2017 21:24

Definitely party at this age. Exams can be rescheduled.

Bluebell1981 · 25/11/2017 21:25

Party, party, PARTY!

bostonkremekrazy · 25/11/2017 21:25

Exam if you've already booked it, reception parties are every other weekend at age 5.....

Reppin · 25/11/2017 21:26

Party, the parent picking the exam sounds joyless.

alittlehelp · 25/11/2017 21:28

Whichever the child wants, which I would imagine would be the party.

deptfordgirl · 25/11/2017 21:31

Party if that's what he would prefer.

Party party party
And 100% party if that's what he would choose.

Ihavepatrick · 25/11/2017 21:34

Party!

ReanimatedSGB · 25/11/2017 21:34

Party. No hobby exam is important at 5 years old.

user4321 · 25/11/2017 21:34

Let him choose!
