Aibu to keep supermarket refund ?

NewbieT · 25/11/2017 09:27

I was delivered shopping by one ofthe huge chains the other night, half an hour late at 10.30pm, last on his round. His handheld machine thingy that usually you use to sign was broken, so I signed a hard copy of the receipt , which he kept.

Today Ive been emailed by the supermarket to confirm my refund for he whole shop, it's clearly gone down as not been delivered. I know it's robably wrong to keep the refund but my main thought is he delivery driver - would he, or staff back at the depot , get into trouble if I keep it?
Or would they be more likely to get into trouble if I notify the supermarket?
I honestly have no trouble returning the refund, an geneally honest, I have always told the cashier if given too much on change, for example!

maybe there's a 'if not delivered on time' clause type refund thing Flowers

Whinesalot · 25/11/2017 17:25

I think I'd feel too guilty to keep it under the circumstances.

Raraolala · 25/11/2017 17:33

It’s illegal to deduct from wages for things like this. No reasonable supermarket would do that.

FeelingAggrieved · 25/11/2017 18:16

Why would you consider keeping it?

thegrinchreaper · 25/11/2017 18:28

I wouldn't keep quiet but if it's Tesco, I wouldn't bat an eyelid if someone happened to get some freebies after the corrupt stunts they've pulled in recent years.

Mumgetsfitin15 · 25/11/2017 18:37

Keep it, are you sure it wasn’t refunded due to being late? I had this before with Asda the guy said you’ll get a full refund but might as well take all the shopping as well as would only be put down as waste on return i.e not back on sale.

JonSnowsWife · 25/11/2017 18:52

Doubtful. I had to fight for my refund when they hadn't even bothered to deliver my bloody shopping once. They had already taken the money. My Bank had to call it back as a fraudulent transaction in the end.

OurMiracle1106 · 25/11/2017 19:01

I would be emailing/phoning them to let them know their mistake and making payment for the shop but I would be asking the delivery charge to be waived as it was late.

RoomOfRequirement · 25/11/2017 19:04

I agree she should inform the supermarket but cannot believe some of you acting as if she walked right in to Asda and stole a whole trolley of food. Be serious now. It's not the fault of the consumer if the retailer makes a mistake. OP did nothing wrong, and I only check the email I use for this kind of thing every couple weeks so this could definitely happen to me without my even noticing. That doesn't make her a terrible person or a thief!! Honestly I have enough to be doing day to day that doesn't include chasing up the mistakes of others. So Yes, morally, let them know (I see you already did), but if you didn't thats on them.

DragonBone · 25/11/2017 19:06

If you tell them - they will likely grant you a voucher or similar for being an honest customer !

Jayfee · 25/11/2017 19:08

You won't feel happy about yourself. I just had a similar dilemma and felt better when I returned the double delivered item.

My mother works on the internet shopping at Adsa so I asked her.
She said the driver would get in to trouble

FeelingAggrieved · 26/11/2017 06:49

@RoomOfRequirement You may not check your emails regularly however the OP has and is aware of the refund, so...

Dreams16 · 26/11/2017 07:48

I would let them know only because I believe in Karma and I'd be worried I'd end up having some bad luck happen to me for not being honest in first place

Always reverse it too how would you feel if they had charged you twice and were hoping you wouldn't notice but yet you'd feel hard hit if you were missing more money than you thought also what if that driver gets into trouble or accused of stealing the goods I would just phone them and explain what's happened chances are they will be grateful for your honesty and offer you a little something as a thank you

Slartybartfast · 26/11/2017 08:36

I would definitely leave it and assume it will be taken anyway.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 26/11/2017 08:45

I had to make five different phone calls to get a refund for my shopping after it wasn't delivered3 times in a row! Five days later they issued the refund then the next day refunded again. I decided that as I had to ask for my money back then they could do the same, they never have.

SilverySurfer · 26/11/2017 10:06

If you're dishonest and a thief, go right ahead and keep it. If not, I don't understand why you even need to ask Hmm

Jaxhog · 26/11/2017 11:56

I am surprised you even asked! Of course YABU, it's dishonest.

IlikemyTeahot · 30/11/2017 02:40

undelivered shop would get binned anyway

CiderwithBuda · 30/11/2017 03:19

A few years ago we did a big online shop with Sainsbury's- £300 worth. There was a lot of flooding locally and a lot of deliveries were cancelled or late. Ours was fine though. Came on time as we weren't in the flooded area.

Got an email to say they were refunding due to the delivery issues. I called them and explained our shopping had arrived but was told to just accept th refund as they were refunding everyone from that day as a good will gesture. The person on the phone said just enjoy it as it doesn't happen often!

IlikemyTeahot · 30/11/2017 03:20

Oops totally misread original post!! Silly me for skimming. So I see OP has the shopping and the refund. First of all OP no one at the depot will be in trouble for this. My DP is in quite a high up position in a depot that caters to both an online service and a known supermarket chain...he's snoozing now but I'm going with stuff he's told me previously. Did the driver contact you at all to say he would be delayed? In some cases a person may receive a discount but I've not heard of a full refund because of a late driver. Also you would not receive a refund had the delivery not been made. Say you were not home or had to pop out during delivery slot, even though driver was late, you are still responsible for notifying them that you were unavailable. Any thing chilled/frozen would have to be chucked and you will be charged regardless of circumstance. I dont think the driver would be in any trouble especially with the machine being broken..hopefully he would have relayed this back to his depot and followed their instructions. If he didn't inform them, then that's what he would get in trouble for, same goes if he failed to inform you he would be late. But don't feel bad that would not be your fault. They are trained to respond to certain situations and to contact depot if anything changes, they would only get a slap on the wrist for it anyhow not fired. Depending on what store this is I dont think the drivers are able to refund more than a few quid so this decision would have come from management but I'm still not sure why you would get a full refund, unless your stuff was defrosted.
Your best bet is to contact them in the morning and find out. Also make note of who you speak to and what time/date. Check your receipt and find out your drivers name and remember to tell them time due vs arrival time. Hopefully It wasn't a mistake and you'll get to keep It. But strongly suggest you do not ignore as they would notice eventually and it would be awful to have money disappear from your account when you least expect it.
