Aibu to keep supermarket refund ?

I was delivered shopping by one ofthe huge chains the other night, half an hour late at 10.30pm, last on his round. His handheld machine thingy that usually you use to sign was broken, so I signed a hard copy of the receipt , which he kept.

Today Ive been emailed by the supermarket to confirm my refund for he whole shop, it's clearly gone down as not been delivered. I know it's robably wrong to keep the refund but my main thought is he delivery driver - would he, or staff back at the depot , get into trouble if I keep it?
Or would they be more likely to get into trouble if I notify the supermarket?
I honestly have no trouble returning the refund, an geneally honest, I have always told the cashier if given too much on change, for example!

No. It would be stealing.

Serialweightwatcher · 25/11/2017 10:01

As far as I know from someone who works at a big supermarket, the driver would probably get into a lot of trouble and that's not fair - they are obviously going to want to know from him/her where the order went, so pay for the stuff you've had

whoareyoukidding · 25/11/2017 10:02

YABU - it's theft.

NewbieT · 25/11/2017 10:02

Interesting - genuinely surprised at the consensus! I guess I shouldn't consider myself that honest after all! Though I think it's crazy to say it's the same as wheeling a trolley of shopping out of a shop - this would be a sin of omission not commission, and I'm hardly responsible for correcting a supermarket's mistakes! And no not on the breadline, would it make a difference if I was? If so, why?! Either it's wrong or not to keep schtum.

Thanks for replies anyway, food for thought (no pun intended)

Ahh so you expected everyone to agree you should steal from the supermarket....

So you still need to think about whether you're okay with becoming a thief, then?

Slartybartfast · 25/11/2017 10:06

you should get a goodwill voucher for the lateness of delivery.

DotDashBeep · 25/11/2017 10:06

You need to ask? Some people have a twisted idea of honesty.

Myheartbelongsto · 25/11/2017 10:08

A month before Christmas you could potentially cost someone their job for the price of a few groceries.

Terrible to even consider keeping it.

Bumbumtaloo · 25/11/2017 10:10

I had something similar with a well known toyshop. I had pre-ordered two items for dd’s Christmas present. DH collected on my behalf but the machine was broken and he was just given the package. Never thought any more of it. I then began getting bombarded with emails saying I needed to collect the items, I spent god knows on the phone/live chat and email saying I had collected the items. This went on for weeks and eventually they listened!

Not once did I think of keeping the money or not telling them I had collected.

So, I do think YABU.

TookyClothespin · 25/11/2017 10:10

This is definitely one where YWBU to keep the refund. It's an entire weekly food shop! Not just one item. Ring customer services now, inform them what happened and let them decide. How would you feel if you found out the driver lost his job so you could get a weeks free shopping?

Bumbumtaloo · 25/11/2017 10:10

*how long

WaitingforGalGadot · 25/11/2017 10:10

Just wait for them to ask for it, they surely will. Their mistake let them rectify it.

Leviticus · 25/11/2017 10:10

OP be honest.

asmuch how on earth can your DD's employer hold her responsible for drive offs?

AnaWinter · 25/11/2017 10:10

Op tell the company. You have to. How could you even consider otherwise? Of course someone is going to get the blame.

Littlepond · 25/11/2017 10:12

Of course you shouldn't keep it!

user1471548375 · 25/11/2017 10:12

I'd ring them, but not because I felt bad about stealing groceries, but because I'd worry the driver would get in trouble.

This has happened before, and they didn't seem bothered about retaking the payment.

Heckneck · 25/11/2017 10:15

What makes you think that the paperwork you've signed isn't going to be looked at?

VladmirsPoutine · 25/11/2017 10:17

I thought this might be something like they gave you a box of 6 bottles of wine vs just the one you actually ordered.

Of course you should notify them.

Blahblahblahzeeblah · 25/11/2017 10:18

Call them. You'd likely still get it for free. Debenhams once refunded a whole order instead of one item and when I contacted them they said they couldn't retake payment and to take it as a good will gesture. Its best to be honest.

Mxyzptlk · 25/11/2017 10:21

My DD works in a local supermarket and any till shortages or drive offs from the petrol station are deducted from her wages until they are paid for.

That's disgusting. Drive offs aren't the staff's fault.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to make deductions from wages for till shorts or drive offs.

You can't be expected to second guess whether notifying the store, or not, is more likely to result in trouble for the driver.
The honest thing is to notify them, so just do that.

cleanandtidy · 25/11/2017 10:25

asmuchConfused
You sure?
I doubt they do that. Especially not one if the big ones.
Does she work for a small, local supermarket?

NewbieT · 25/11/2017 10:26

Good point Mxyzptlk
