Aibu to keep supermarket refund ?

NewbieT · 25/11/2017 09:27

I was delivered shopping by one ofthe huge chains the other night, half an hour late at 10.30pm, last on his round. His handheld machine thingy that usually you use to sign was broken, so I signed a hard copy of the receipt , which he kept.

Today Ive been emailed by the supermarket to confirm my refund for he whole shop, it's clearly gone down as not been delivered. I know it's robably wrong to keep the refund but my main thought is he delivery driver - would he, or staff back at the depot , get into trouble if I keep it?
Or would they be more likely to get into trouble if I notify the supermarket?
I honestly have no trouble returning the refund, an geneally honest, I have always told the cashier if given too much on change, for example!

I wouldn’t in this case. I did once though when Sainsbury’s messed me around so badly I ended up getting my shopping over two days and even then half of it was wrong.

Enjoy your good karma everyone!

You seem pissed off that you've notified them; you probably think MN guilt tripped you into it.

No, if you felt guilt, it's because you knew it was wrong.

For god's sake spare a thought for the poor driver. Theres a good chance his machine hadnt been working for the last few deliveries. Of everyone is as dishinest as it seems you are planning to be he will almost certainly lose his job which will be lovely for his family just before Christmas?

Hopefully at least one if them will write to explain what actually happened and they will realise that some of their customers that night were dishonest thieving turds.... you know what to do OP

You should tell them but they may well let you keep the refund.
Once I had a delivery minus steaks I needed for a dinner party that night. I had to go into the store to pick them up - they also gave me a bottle of wine and said that they would refund me for the steaks as a gesture of goodwill. I later had an email to say they had refunded the whole lot. I rang and told them and they said not to worry I could keep it.

When I worked in a supermarket things that were broken on the shop floor (customers/staff dropping bottles etc) or any shoplifted items went down as “shrinkage”

No one will probably notice missing items i.e your shopping but theres a chance they might and come back to you for the money.

I should add that in my case I signed for the shopping when it finally arrived but had been on the phone numerous times complaining. In OP’s case I’d be worried about the driver getting into trouble.

started typing ds spilt glass of milk then came back to finish off my scathing reply. Glad you did that hopefully you saved the poor driver a potentially nasty situation

Have people really been refunded whole shopping bills as a gesture of goodwill for missing a couple of items or even because, like the op, refunded in error and then told to keep everything?

Chances are the paper with your signature showing that you had the shopping would've turned up and you would have had to pay out for it again anyways.

Munch yes, happens quite often. Not only to as a 'good will' gesture but sometimes it's more administrative havoc to chase you for a £10 bottle of wine or a few wayward bread rolls.

So if you keep the money it will look like the delivery driver not only didn't do his job by delivering to you but also kept your entire shopping for himself because it will be recorded as being put on his van but not returned to the shop undelivered.

Makes me quite sad to realise that there are such dishonest people that think this would be acceptable although heartening to realise most aren't.

I work in retail tho nothing to do with home deliveries.
The (ginormous) company I work for has laughable "systems" and I could easily believe they'd have no idea if the shopping was delivered or not.

OP has emailed to inform the store so that's fine.

Don’t return it. They probably refunded you due to broken machine and are going to take it another way, as driver took a receipt. I’d give it some time first or you’d be paying twice. The refund will be for the online transaction failing and the transaction by driver will go through.

That's helpful thanks Fluffy, I'll keep an eye out for that.

@Mxyzptlk it's not illegal as long as their wages aren't reduced below minium wage and as long as they have signed in their contract to say that they understand any drive offs and shorts will be deduced. My husband looked it up for her.

So sorry I missed another reply - @cleanandtidy it's a local shop but it is allowed, my husband checked it out for her. As long as her wage isn't taken under minium wages and its part of her conditions in her contract then it is allowed its legal.

Even if you did keep if they have up to 6 years to recall the money so just tell them.

Haven’t RTFT

Employers cannot take more than 10% of your gross pay in any one pay period, as well as the other things you mentioned.

@nokidshere I didn't know that Smile thank you. It's still legal for them to take the money off the staff wages though isn't it?

As long as it's in the contract, doesn't take earnings below nmw and the member of staff is informed yes sadly.

They have to give it back though if they reclaim their money!

Are you v hard up?

Why would this make it okay? Confused I've been very hard up many a time. I've never resorted to theft, and yes it can be classed as it.

YABU OP.
