Crossroads. Lanes A and B are on minor roads, coming onto a 40mph limit road with two lanes both ways (see Lane 1 and Lane 2). The cross roads are traffic light controlled. Both minor roads get green lights at the same time. There are no filter arrows.

You are in Lane A. You want to turn right onto the main road. There are cars in Lane B also signalling to turn down this road (left turn for B).

The lights turn green. You:

  1. Pull out into the junction, wait until there are no cars approaching in Lane B, and make your turn. You can go into Lanes 1 or 2.

  2. Turn right at the same time as cars in Lane B are turning left. Assume all cars in Lane B will turn into Lane 1, therefore you can turn into Lane 2.

Further information: there is a petrol station about 200m up the road with Lanes 1 and 2, you need to be in Lane 2 to access this. However I think this shouldn't change what I think is the correct answer Grin.

I’d be happy doing 2.

Assuming everyone is going slowly, you can tell if people are turning left from lane B. Then see if they are going to the left lane and filter next to them, or behind if they go to the right lane.

There’s plenty of space and as long as you have your eyes open I don’t see much chance of a accident.

I can see why most people would say option 1 though.

Very similar junction near where I live

I always do 1.

blueskyinmarch · 23/11/2017 18:30

If someone from lane B wants to go to the petrol station they would head for lane 2 so if you tried to turn from lane A into lane 2 then 'boom'. Not good.

StealthNinjaMum · 23/11/2017 18:32

Excellent diagram. Excellent thread title. Thank you op.

I would answer 1 too.

CatastropheKate · 23/11/2017 18:36

So who crashed, you or DH?

lazyleo · 23/11/2017 18:36
This feels like a trick - surely it's 1.... either that or I need to seriously revisit my highway code ...
museumum · 23/11/2017 18:42

Number 1.
I turn right at a junction like this. Often the oncoming left turning cars are not that tight to the kerb or they go into lane 2 to turn right at the next opportunity or sometimes there are packed cars in lane 1.
I’ve actually never seen anyone do 2 in front of me either.

museumum · 23/11/2017 18:43

Also lame B people surely very likely to go straight on as the other lane would mean getting stuck behind their right turners.

RagingFemininist · 23/11/2017 18:45

1 or 2 depending on what cars are doing!

So start with 1, assess what cars are doing (straight in, turning right or left).
If cars are turning left, I would go with 2 if said road is very busy and there are plenty of cars behind me and/or coming the other way.

nocake · 23/11/2017 18:46

2 is incorrect for two reasons. You can't assume all cars from B will go into lane 1. If one of them wants to use lane 2 you will have taken their right of way. Also, a car from B could choose to go straight, in which case they could hit you which would be your fault.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/11/2017 18:50

B has priority.

  1. It never hurts to be extra careful but it can hurt it you are reckless.

thy hav th right of way

Lenl · 23/11/2017 20:26

Thank you Mumsnet! I believe option 1 is correct. However I drive via this junction everyday, usually using Lane B to turn left and I'd say 80% of the time people do option 2 coming from Lane A.

It drives me crazy. I often want to be in Lane 2 and I can't because people swing in from Lane A at the same time as I turn so I'm forced to turn sharply. I try and make it obvious but it's ignored. It seems an accident waiting to happen. I can't work out why people think the normal rules don't apply at this junction. Plus Lane A goes onto an industrial estate so it's a lot of larger vehicles doing it.
