To think these YouTube videos are creepy and children shouldn't be watching them?

I read that the "Toyfreaks" YouTube channel has recently been banned, and honestly I'm surprised it has taken this long

www.independent.co.uk/news/youtube-toy-freaks-greg-chism-videos-daughter-bad-baby-father-children-crying-throwing-up-a8068686.html

I took DD to a friend's house last year, and the children were watching this on friend's DC tablet. Honestly, I thought at the time that it was creepy and "off" and I stopped DD watching it. The dad gives me the shivers, he's very odd and has basically used his daughters as trained monkies, invading their privacy horribly in the process.

As well as this, you have the weird pregnant Elsa videos - if you like your conspiracy theories, Google Elsagate. Some people think that these cartoons are basically a way to brainwash kids, or a form of product placement. I wouldn't go that far, but some of them are really disturbing, featuring cartoon characters being murdered etc. All against a backdrop of nursery music.

I know children tend to like strange/gross humour, but these videos are all a bit weird, and frankly I prefer Bagpuss Grin

I know a lot of babies/toddlers who use tablets, and parents aren't always sitting right beside them to check what they're watching, and I suppose they see Elsa or Spiderman and think it's alright. Even kid's YouTube doesn't do a great job of filtering things out.

I'd link a few videos as an example, but my phone won't let me.

Hmmm another one?

Insomnibrat · 22/11/2017 23:09

My DN uses an ipad and was VERY upset by the Peppa Pig video nasties which were doing the rounds a while ago.

I'm starting to get very concerned about how subtle, yet effective a medium youtube is at targeting youngsters. I'm mostly referring to the likes of the Zoella marketing machine etc but literally ANYONE or ANYTHING can be streamed into your home.

liverbird10 · 22/11/2017 23:09

I googled Elsasgate. WTAF did I just read? Grin

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 22/11/2017 23:11

There's another post about this in Active.

Weird coincidence

Imstickingwiththisone · 22/11/2017 23:11

I've seen one where Elsa essentially walks in to a severed head on top of closedyoilet seat, runs out screaming and Spiderman is there trying to grab her. It wasn't gory like a horror, it was cartoonish. But obviously very wrong. This came up on recommended videos on DNieces tablet when she was watching someone build a Lego set.

pinkmagic1 · 22/11/2017 23:15

I remember when my Ds was about 4, turning my back for a moment whilst he was watching cartoons on you tube. I turned back and there was Postman Pat having a wank!

Raisedbyguineapigs · 22/11/2017 23:16

I agree. I don't like it. I put parental settings on my kids tablets and they seem to get through them, presumably because they are linked to children's cartoons and toys.

RefuseTheLies · 22/11/2017 23:19

I turned back and there was Postman Pat having a wank!

Shock Shock Shock

How can I get that mental image out my head now?

liverbird10 · 22/11/2017 23:21

KidsTube helps avoid some but not all of this. Many of these are produced by bots.

Worriedobsessive · 22/11/2017 23:24

Excellent article

LostInTheTunnelOfGoats · 22/11/2017 23:27

I haven't seen the post on Active Confused
Sorry about that SheRaagh Hmm

Postman Pat having a wank Grin Elsagate is totally mad, lots of stuff about YT algorithms being used by Russian trolls to brainwash kids....I think?

The videos are bloody dreadful though, and I agree, it's the insidious marketing to kids which is the worrying thing. All those unboxing videos. It's like watching Channel 4 just for the adverts.

Pawpainting · 22/11/2017 23:28

I used to let dd use the kids YouTube app to watch the toy unboxing videos that were popular a while ago. Then I saw the weird shit that was coming up (pregnant Elsa, weird Spiderman, poo stuff) and I deleted the app. This was about a year ago. I only let her watch the occasional video now with my supervision. It's really weird and disturbing some of the stuff and I wonder what the purpose is

ReanimatedSGB · 22/11/2017 23:46

Some of it is basically mischeif and parody, and simply not meant for kids at all. (There is a long and entertaining history of rude parodies of kids shows, a lot of which is very funny). I read that article about the thoroughly wierd bot stuff as well - part of the problem does seem to be algorhythms...
