...there's just so many and I don't see how it saves any time or really what the point is? It's so confusing lol!
Dsis for example - why not just write sister?? Confused

OP posts:
MinervaSaidThar · 23/11/2017 11:12

I don't mind most abbreviations, but it's annoying when people use DS to mean sister and DF to mean friend.

They can mean son and father/fiancé too so you have to look at the context of the post, which sometimes takes a while to get.

Sister, friend, dad, fiancé would be sooo much easier to read.

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2017 11:15

'GP' sometimes takes a read or two. Grandparent/doctor/small furry animal? Grin

TheStoic · 23/11/2017 11:29

I think adding ‘D’ to everything is very twee and a bit embarrassing.

Persemillion · 23/11/2017 12:00

Asthenia

Find it bizarre when someone is talking about how utterly terrible their family member is but still refers to them as “dear”. ‘DM killed my cat and DSis helped her”

Exactly. The dreadful D thing makes no sense at all.

Tinkerbec · 23/11/2017 19:13

Agree! I love reading proper words.

Tastesjustlikecherrycola85 · 23/11/2017 23:00

Never understood what BOAK means

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2017 23:03

It means vomit.

ChinkChink · 23/11/2017 23:28

Boak isn't an initialism though. It's a proper word - variant spelling of 'boke', to vomit.

EvilDoctorBallerinaRoastDuck · 23/11/2017 23:44

Which is Scottish, I lived in Glasgow for 12 years, joined MN in 2014 and absolutely love that people use "boak". It doesn't look right spelt "boke". Hmm

BackforGood · 23/11/2017 23:54

I like the ability to shorten commonly used words / phrases.
Indeed, it annoys me now when I'm writing up reports at work that I have to type out the whole work for 'children', when 'dc' would be sooo much quicker Grin

ChinkChink · 23/11/2017 23:59

back for good

CazzieCatsRock · 24/11/2017 00:00

When I first joined, I thought the name 'Tia' was very popular - until the penny dropped! Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 24/11/2017 00:08

dilligaf?

BackforGood · 24/11/2017 00:11

ChinkChink

Grin Indeed, but (in my defence), I feel that adds intonation Wink

BlackeyedSusan · 24/11/2017 00:12

if you don't like it post somewhere else that does not use acronyms. yanbu to not like them, but complaining when they are well established part of the forum... Hmm

there are many of the hate swearing hate acronym type threads.

ChinkChink · 24/11/2017 00:15

These are not acronyms.

Ilovetolurk · 24/11/2017 05:50

Ah chinkchink

Was just going to say the same thing. It’s one of my pet peeves

My other peeve on here is hard to follow stepparenting threads about bedroom arrangements with dsd13 dd12 dss11 ds10 etc

Far too confusing

Sparklingbrook · 24/11/2017 05:59

That all makes complete sense to me.

TrojanWhore · 24/11/2017 06:31

Agree BlackEyedSusan - I think it takes a particular kind of self-centred arrogance to come into a large and well-established group and tell them they're doing it wrong.

We're just fine.

Not everyone fits in to every group (either on the Internet or in RL), and it's up to the individual to find one they like. Not expect the groups to change to suit them.

Sparklingbrook · 24/11/2017 06:36

Very often people new to the site complain about the acronyms and the 'D' stuff, then promptly suggest a 'like' button too.

Trying to make MN like all other sites, when the fact that it isn't makes it more appealing.

YOLO

Vitalogy · 24/11/2017 06:43

I just use OP and MN I think. I don't mind lol.

BlueThesaurusRex · 24/11/2017 06:48

TAAT

eh?

Elledouble · 24/11/2017 07:05

I don’t particularly like them, so I don’t really use them. You might be happier if you do the same, OP.
