Hairdresser should part pay for dye spilt over trousers?

Hairdresser splodged a lot of dye on my trousers (trainee but not actively watched iyswim) & salon offered to clean it but still shows a patch. Would you ask them to contribute to new pair? For context, cost around £50 2 years ago, but I loved them & cannot get same style now)

I would expect salon to pay full replacement cost.

No I wouldn't, as long as appropriate gown etc had been put on. I always wear clothes that don't matter if they get spoilt when I go to hairdressers, I think it's a bit of a risk you take.

I think you should wear old clothes that you're not too bothered about when you get your hair dyed.

If they were 50 and youve had them 2 years i would ask them for 25 voucher if you intend to keep going there.

Thank you. Interesting one as I've been a customer for a long time but as its a trainee I pay a reduced rate (£65) also the decades that i have been a customer have seen the salon go through many hands.

I've had similar happen to me. Had a makeover on the Estée Lauder counter in boots. Assistant used liquid eyeliner which splattered on my really nice cardi. It didn't come out, it was like a plastic had set on it, couldn't scrape it off either, very odd substance. Assistant wouldn't agree to pay for to try dry cleaning, or contribute to a replacement, and had her manager's backing. Haven't bought anything from there since.

I would expect them to pay yes! Of course, they ruined your trousers! If I ruined someone's clothes in the job I work in I would offer some kind of voucher for a new pair.

Worked in plenty of salons and they should offer a percentage off your treatment plus a free treatment in the future (trim or deep condition usually) and 100000% should be paying for your pants - trainee or not.

Not at two years old no, even if I loved them. I wear unloved clothes for the hairdressers, if the chemicals can take colour out of your hair then your clothes don't stand a chance. Also I wouldn't have a trainee put a colour on my hair unless I were paying a reduced fee, in which case, the risk is higher.

finally, if she dropped some colour on your pants why didn't you say "hang on a minute" and go and wash it off?

Hmm, years ago a salon I worked in was contacted by a regular client whose silk Hermes blouse was bleached where it had come in contact with her skin after she had her hair bleached. The bleach itself didn't touch the blouse, she had removed it and worn a gown during the process, but her skin must have retained traces of bleach and ruined the collar of the blouse.

If I remember correctly she was compensated (can't remember if it was a percentage or full price) but she had more money than god was a very good client and they would have lost a lot of business if she'd walked.

The consensus in the salon was that she should not have worn a nice item of clothing to have her hair done.

Trainee or not I would expect them to have covered me up properly so that any spills wouldn't go on my clothes. Personally I don't have any clothes that I'd be happy for someone to ruin apart from stuff that's so crap I wouldn't be seen in public wearing.

I think they should pay to replace the trousers with an equivalent priced pair, so if they were £50 2 years ago but would cost £70 to replace, they pay £70. It would also be a nice gesture to give you a reduction on the price of the treatment too.

I went in to collect the clothing as they had offered to get it cleaned, but warned me that they couldn't get it all out. When I arrived, I was offered a free haircut & blow dry - by another trainee who needed to do it to qualify - and I accepted. And he qualified! So happy with that.

I do agree with the PP that I couldn't really wear clothes out of the house that were so crap that I'd be ok with them being ruined!

Who has a wardrobe full of stuff they don't mind getting ruined?! I would be annoyed if any of my clothes were ruined at the hairdressers unless I wore my decorating jeans and t.shirt.

I’m really shocked people consciously wear old clothes to get hair dyed, it’s never occurred to me before! Will probs pay more attention now next time I goto the hairdressers!
