To hide everyone on my FB who does Elf on the Shelf?

《Disclaimer: It doesnt bother me one jot that people participate in the Elf on the Shelf bandwaggon》

But why share it every single fucking day on facebook? And everyone who does it, shares it. They are like vegans: Enthusiastic, vocal and absoloutley overbearing about it.

Do it
Dont do it
But honestly, no one outside your home cares what the elf got up to last night. Or how bloody marvellous a parent you are. Or how ingenious your arrangements are.

Someone just mentioned something on FB about "upping their elf game this year" and it all came FLOODING BACK.

Im just going to have to hide everyone til Jan. Like a sort of elf hibernation.

ooooh, you've just reminded me that FB, IG, AND Twitter are all going to be awash in the next few weeks.
I'm all for Christmas, I celebrate early with songs and general Christmas, but the elves just no. More tat and expense to get sucked into, loads of Christmas stuff without elves too!

mathanxiety · 22/11/2017 01:08

This is so much funnier, so much more creative, so much less earnest and there is no creepy side to it unless that is what you are shooting for:

Dinovember!

YANBU Hide the posters who post daily updates about a bloody stuffed Elf!!

Nauseating at best....

Lovestonap · 22/11/2017 06:05

Yep, Facebook elf on a shelf is beyond tedious, but marginally more interesting than '7 day, 7 black and white pictures, no explanation, no people blah blah blah'

I literally HATE that!

The only reason I have Facebook is to keep up with what my friends/family/children's school are doing. Not to see an 'arty' photo of their boot and an old apple core!

Grrr. New years resolutions, reduce Facebook and mumsnet time. I'm sure these things aren't good for my mental health.

LaurieMarlow · 22/11/2017 07:24

I don't even 'get' the black and white picture thing. What are you supposed to do with them?

LaurieMarlow · 22/11/2017 07:28

math that's exactly same thing as EOTS but with dinosurs. It's very cute, but I don't get what makes it funnier and more creative.

ShowOfHands · 22/11/2017 07:34

We have Sylvanian turtles here who wake up on December 1st and move round the house each day. I was doing this looong before that elf schlepped up. Never posted it on social media though.

People do all sorts of stuff on FB that I don't. I just scroll past.

CiderwithBuda · 22/11/2017 07:38

So glad EOTS wasn't around when DS was little. I would not have been doing it. Th spying and reporting to Santa is (1) creepy and (2) unnecessary as he knows anyway!

And thankfully nobody on my FB feed does it. Or at least if they do they don't broadcast it.

I'm quite liking some of the b&w photos I'm seeing - I have friends all over the world and some of them have put up really nice photos. I. Careful not to comment or like in case I get tagged to do it though! My life is much less interesting! It might well end up with a photo of an apple core!

Rebeccaslicker · 22/11/2017 07:52

The only thing about elf that is remotely amusing are some of the adult versions people have made with little lines of icing sugar or barbie in a jacuzzi etc. And even that was only mildly amusing. And it was about 2 years ago.

We will be doing it this year as someone bought DD an elf. Not one single pic will be taken or shared, nobody would give a shit!

NoMudNoLotus · 22/11/2017 07:53

Its not about reporting back to santa at allHmm

Its about making laughter in our house ... nothing more nothing less.

Do you really need to be so vitriolic ?

Conniedescending · 22/11/2017 07:57

Agree I hate it....it's just not very classy

LaurieMarlow · 22/11/2017 07:58

I don't know a single person who does EOTS that does reporting back to santa.

Mrstumbletap · 22/11/2017 08:05

YABU for not pointing out all the other things people do to boast about on facebook such as:
Christmas craft
Halloween treats/costumes
Easter bonnets
Large stuffing/beef Wellington Xmas dinner
Valentines roses
Went for a run/to the gym- here are my photos

It's like people think if don't post this stuff it didn't happen. It's so narcissistic.

Elf can buggar off Grin

DressedCrab · 22/11/2017 08:06

YANBU. I have very classy friends so don't see any.

Rebeccaslicker · 22/11/2017 08:06

Ha, narcissistic is the word my 75 year old DF uses for fb. He cannot see the point of it at all Grin

CiderwithBuda · 22/11/2017 11:21

I thought part of it was that the elf appeared and was hanging around in the run up to Xmas to report back to Santa if the children had been well behaved or not? If not apologies if I have misunderstood. I don't think I was vitriolic though?

LaurieMarlow · 22/11/2017 11:27

Well that is part of the 'official' version, I guess.

But people adapt things to their own preferences the whole time. No one I know likes the reporting bit, so they leave it out. The elf is just there to cause mischief til Christmas time.

Just like santa supposedly gives coal to children who haven't been good, but I've never seen this pan out in real life. Wink

Nicpem1982 · 22/11/2017 15:52

Laurie- my dh got coal in his stocking from me as he was being a miserable grinch..... I hid all of his presents until after dinner on Xmas day and just left the coal, he's very festive these days Grin

OwlKiss · 22/11/2017 16:08

I quite wish I had some FB friends who did this, I would be quite interested to see the pictures.

We move the 3 kings around the house throughout advent and Christmas, until they eventually reach the crib on 6th Jan. Have never thought of making them get up to pranks or photographing them though.

LaurieMarlow · 22/11/2017 19:22

nic so it happens. I'm shocked you went through with it. Grin

How did he react?

Nicpem1982 · 22/11/2017 19:33

He was grumpy and mil tried to make him feel better and get me to give up the goods I just shrugged and said 'santas choice'
