Just think how many homeless would be housed in Buck palace.
I’d rather see at least one of these big houses turned into social housing, than under occupied

I wouldn't, I'd rather it was burnt to the fucking ground to be honest!! Sad

At least be realistic & try to make some cash out of it, don't turn it into a shithole with rubbish & graffiti everywhere to appease your conscience....

I'm proud of our country & our heritage/history, I don't understand this desire to turn it into a blank, characterless place....

Nah we should pimp it out for tourist cash like Versailles. But pump the money we're saving on royal family upkeep into helping the poorest.

Also yes, the whole point of a monarchy is that we get no choice in terms of who comes next. Skipping Charles just isn't an option.

How come when I post a serious thread disliking the monarchy and the poor value they offer I get flamed?

Then I post an irronic thread about how much value they give I also get flammed?Confused

I'm actually pro-Royal overall.

Not in a simpering way, but I much prefer having them as head of state than the kind of people who would likely be a President.

William and harry always going on about how people should seek help for mental health issues like they did as teenagers/young adults really annoys me

Oh god this fucks me off too. I know teenagers who have waited months and months for referrals. Kids with EDs and severe depression. It's all fine and dandy to be seen to be saying the right things, isn't it. Shame the millions wasted a year on keeping William, Kate and Harry in their pampered cocoons couldn't be siphoned off to help those who do as they preach - ie funding critically overstretched NHS MH services. And let's not forget that one major cause of depression in all age groups is poverty.

Fucking clueless hypocrites.

I don't know why people assume president elects are destined to be arseholes.

Ireland has done a great job electing its presidents of late. Fine people whose achievements would stand up anywhere. Highly respected in the country and abroad.

And that's not necessarily the case with Irish politicians.

@wheresmymojo aye, but a shitty president can be voted out. The monarchy is hereditary, we don't get a choice. Would you be so pleased with them if King William turns out to be a womanising, drinking, gambling, idle monarch as so many of his ancestors were? Would you be chuffed to be picking up his bar tabs and paying his gambling debts for half a century? Because you'd be stuck with him for a very long time. These royals live to a healthy, ripe old age - no surprise, when they've never encountered an NHS waiting list, or had to choose whether to heat or eat like so many millions of pensioners do, or had the threat of redundancy or homelessness looming over them. It's easy to live to 100+ when you're pampered and cossetted.

Another thing I don’t understand about this is
Take away the title and they are nothing better than the Work shy claimant. I am not saying all claimants are workshy, just the ones like the royals who do the minimum they can get away with.

One group are told to get a fucking job and stop expecting us to pay for your life style and pay for your repairs. They cost us loads
The other group are fabulous. The bit of money we spend on the is so worth it.

And in the same sections of the media, too. Very often in the same editions.

So stop going out with him & getting the rounds in!!! Grin That's the only way your scenario even pretends to be relevant.

Honestly? It wouldn't bother me a jot - there is a return on investment no matter how much you think there isn't.

I can think of a lot worse places that a quid of my taxes is going right now than paying the tab for the queen... I've lost more money down the back of the sofa this week than paying for the Royals will cost me all year.

The Palace of Versailles is still much visited without a royal family Buck House will be the same. The monarchy will die with the Queen I can't see the country respecting Charles and his children in the same way.

Lucky you.

Some people can't afford a loaf of bread this morning.

And wouldn't you rather your pennies be spent on fitting sprinklers in tower blocks, or eradicating the need for food banks, or making sure the most vulnerable people in society aren't left cold and hungry this winter?

Saving the lives of thousands, rather than pampering one already fabulously wealthy family who would still be rich beyond your wildest dreams if we stopped doing so tomorrow?

Are you just as happy to foot the bill for those at the other end of the social scale?

You do know the figures for how much they cost are actually much higher than what they say as they exclude lots of stuff like security.

And why on earth do you think that any money saved on paying for the Royals would go into local councils pockets? A certain naivete there.

Even if if it could get "used for good" I think most people would rather it went on NHS, Roads or Railways though. Sorting those out would maximise peoples time in work & bring in more taxes too....

It's more likely to get funnelled into HS3 or a Trident Replacement or Heathrows 12th runway anyway - the poor would never see a penny.

Given your brilliant idea of using Buck House and all the other palaces & Royal properties to house people, I reckon the cost would be going up anyway by the time they'd been made fit for purpose!!

It may well be, but I've got a fecking huge sofa & it sucks cash out of my pockets! Grin

I clicked on the link several times to make up for idiots who somehow distinguish between links that are worthy of being followed and those that aren't.

Besides the basic financial benefits, I think that lots of people struggle with the comprehension of the important part the monarch plays in our politics.
