Who would you rather have as head of state - Tony Blair - Corbyn ?

How about no one, Switzerland manages quite well without.

Creambun2 · 20/11/2017 08:50

Yeah I'm so grateful that my taxpayers money is used to allow William, kate, Beatrice etc to piss around doing mostly fuck all and living a luxury life. They endlessly complain about wanting normality and moaning about intrusion and want a normal life - well give up all the titles money and property then.

NamasteNiki · 20/11/2017 08:53

The Queen doesnt even have a basic high school certificate.

She is totally uneducated.

Great head of state.

Battleax · 20/11/2017 08:55

She is totally uneducated.

I don't think you can quite say that. Unqualified, but not uneducated.

MarmaIadeTwatkins · 20/11/2017 08:57

Given we live in a democracy in the 21st century, an elected head of state would surely be more appropriate. And if they did a shit job, we could vote them out. Not be stuck with idle wastes of space as we are now.

NamasteNiki · 20/11/2017 08:57

She didnt go to school. She wasnt tutored.

She had a governess and no formale education.

Princess Margaret was apparently very angry in later years at her total lack of education.

They have no qualifications at all. They learned how to be ladies with a governess.

ghostyslovesheets · 20/11/2017 08:59

odd choice since we have a Tory Gov Hmm

Look I have nothing against the Queen - she seems dedicated and hard working so maybe we pay her a nice wage and give her a free house - but all the endless hangers on we do not need

People would come and look at the palaces anyway - they do in France

as Marmalade said - at least if a head of state was doing a shit job we get to vote them out

shutitandtidyupgitface · 20/11/2017 08:59

No, she is pretty much uneducated. She was taught French and Governance, and that was about it.

NamasteNiki · 20/11/2017 09:01

She knows loads about dogs and horses. Queen would make a perfect farmers wife.

HellonHeels · 20/11/2017 09:01

WTF? The Express?!! Ha ha ha!

Creambun2 · 20/11/2017 09:02

I hate the deference of some people to the royal family. Typified by express readers really.

Battleax · 20/11/2017 09:03

She was tutored in various things and by very illustrious teachers but it was very heavy on foreign languages, history and constitutional law.

I don't doubt Margaret mainly got the languages and the strolls round the royal art collections with her gran. I don't blame either of them for feeling it was limited and scattergun. But it was education, especially for the Queen.

I'd love to see the monarchy gone, but I don't think you can just make this stuff up.

Dahlietta · 20/11/2017 09:05

Oh, I thought you were being ironic, OP. Were you being serious?!

Zampa · 20/11/2017 09:06

I'm a Republican, I think, but have no real objection to there being a King/Queen of the UK. I do object to the Civil List, considering how much cash they have privately.

I don't believe tourism would fall if we abolished the handouts to the monarch and their family and turned the state owned buildings into museums.

Notreallyarsed · 20/11/2017 09:08

I think the pp who mentioned Grenfell has it spot on. And the paradise papers proved that even the Queen has money in offshore accounts thus depriving HMRC (oh the irony) of tax. I have no personal issues with the royal family, I just don’t see the point of them. They aren’t needed, in fact they are a drain on much needed resources that could be channelled into the NHS, education, the emergency services and many other departments which are buckling under the strain.
How must the residents of Grenfell felt meeting these people who have such luxury when they had just lost everything?

Lightheart · 20/11/2017 09:13

Just to add that although I don't necessarily agree with the royal family we can't sell off Buckingham palace etc because they belong to the Windsor family no matter if they keep their royal status or not

Woodfordhound · 20/11/2017 09:14

And by Thursday the Express will somehow have Diana back on the cover again as statistically, she has featured on Thursday front covers more since her death than when she was alive.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/11/2017 09:18

I like the Queen, I won't lie, but after she dies that should be the end of it imo.

Theresnonamesleft · 20/11/2017 09:20

They aren’t needed. They don’t need all these houses dotted all over the country. Just think how many homeless would be housed in Buck palace.
I’d rather see at least one of these big houses turned into social housing, than under occupied

astoundedgoat · 20/11/2017 09:22

When the monarchy is dissolved the royal palaces won't be sold to Russian oligarchs, it will revert to the state and be managed by the National Trust etc., and the huge amounts of revenue generated will do a vast amount to improve arts and heritage funding in this country, all without the risk of finding out what Prince Andrew has really got up to.

Anybody who things that the Queen HERSELF is responsible for the tourism clearly hasn't been in a queue at Versailles.

Battleax · 20/11/2017 09:23

I think Sandringham (and maybe Balmoral?) is the only (real estate) property they own privately.

coddiwomple · 20/11/2017 09:40

I cannot believe some people are still naive enough to believe that the royal family is a financial benefit to our country.

And what do people really think her political role is, in real life? How much impact does she really have?

I do have a lot of respect for the Queen (and Princess Ann too), but I really hope that we have a referendum when she goes, and we have at the very least a say on what happens next. Let's just be clear things changing would not mean for William and Kate to have exactly the same privileges without the bother of a couple of official engagements a month.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 20/11/2017 09:43

Is this a serious thread? Hmm

KizzyBear · 20/11/2017 09:46

@MarmaIadeTwatkins hit the nail on the head 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Creambun2 · 20/11/2017 09:48

What is all the clamour from some for william and kate to take over when the queen dies? As we all love two lazy air heads funded by the civil list who cry about there lIves not being normally. William and harry always going on about how people should seek help for mental health issues like they did as teenagers/young adults really annoys me. Methinks thst they haven't had to enjoy the nhs mental health waiting lists.
