"Armpit fat" isn't normal over bra?

Pigflewpast · 18/11/2017 16:54

Just been to Bravissimo for a long overdue bra fitting and buying session. They don't measure you, just bring out bras to try based on whatever you went in wearing ( in my case a long past its best 36B from Debenhams). She decided I was a 34dd.
Every bra brought to me gave me varying degrees of fat, including double fat with its own cleavage, above the sides, in front of my arm pits. The fitter just said "yeah, some people get that, you just have to choose the best".
So I left with nothing, except embarrassment, and annoyance that I'll have to find somewhere else to put myself through it again.
I'm a size 10-12, and whilst not skinny not so large that I should be accepting armpit boobs above my bra surely??
Any advice anybody? Please? Dreading going anywhere else now.

No there's not purple. Both Edinburgh and Glasgow have a Bravissimo which are generally pretty solid in my experience (I've tried both), the John Lewis in Edinburgh is also OK for bra fitting although their range seems a bit limited at the moment because of the building work.

R&P are actually no good for me, they don't do my size!

MsHarry · 19/11/2017 20:29

Yes , sorry I forgot about DD! A 32F or 34E.

thegamblersmrs · 19/11/2017 20:35

We did a challenge in Edinburgh of going into as many stores and being ‘fitted’ think JL and bravissimo were the only decent ones. Bhs, la senza and marks were terrible. They’d fit you to what they had in stock.

StatisticallyChallenged · 19/11/2017 20:45

I did the same thegamblersmrs; House of Fraser were also terrible, the little lingerie boutique (Odyssey?) tried to convince me to try a 32F when I'd asked for a 28GG because it was the closest they had, Marks put me in a 36F when I was a 30HH (my size has changed a bit!)

PurpleNurple69 · 19/11/2017 20:59

There’s a little specialist lingerie shop in my local town that I might visit. Apparently she’s really good but i don’t know if she measures the old way. Someone I know gets all her undies from there and comes a fair way to get there when they could drive into the city centre in less time.

thegamblersmrs · 19/11/2017 21:03

Ha ha stats! It’s laughable, anything for a sale.
It might just have been my boss that was so forgiving about the lack of sale but we used to have people come in for a bra for their wedding and when we’d fit them and say we don’t have your size go to JL or bravissimo they’d think we were at it. What would we have to achieve doing ourselves out of a sale! Didn’t want anyone to be fanny four boobs in the wedding pics!

lovelysunnydaysss · 19/11/2017 21:30

Also try a bra that has a thicker band at side / under armpit area.

RedastheRose · 19/11/2017 23:59

If you have a small independent shop nearby they are the best to go to. Specialists in their field, often can judge approximately what size you are from looking at you and are happy to help you find the rights size and style that works best for you.

sueelleker · 20/11/2017 06:36

I bought a couple of bikinis in Italy, and the woman knew what size I needed just by looking at me.

Lethaldrizzle · 20/11/2017 06:52

I get this and I am size 12 and fit. I assumed it was a regretful sign of aging!

Pigflewpast · 21/11/2017 16:48

Been to Debenhams today. Lovely helpful fitter who spent ages with me, brought loads of bras and then gave in!
She's put me at a 30E or 32DD or 32E, but nothing was quite right. Some were horrendous fit. Think I'm a 31 DDD.
They were really limited in those sizes. A Triumph 32DD was an almost but they didn't have it in E.
She pulled the tape a lot harder than I had when I got nearly 34.
I didn't have time to go anywhere else but she's suggested online shopping for delivery to the store where I can try them on before buying, so I'll look at that tonight.

Have a look at brastop online. Big size range there.

TammySwansonTwo · 21/11/2017 16:58

Have you looked up the boob or bust method of measuring? I need to try this. I seem to have a crazily large band size for my overall size and have always thought I'm just broad but wondering if I have it totally wrong.

RavingRoo · 21/11/2017 17:03

Sounds like you’re a Monsoon size 10/12 rather than a H&M one. She was probably being polite and didn’t want to tell you to get a bigger band size and a smaller cup. You’re right it’s not normal to have so much armpit fat that it spills over the sides.

TammySwansonTwo · 21/11/2017 17:31

Also, sorry to hijack but seems some ladies here really know their stuff!

I have a sort of concave breastbone and really struggle to find bras that fit as the middle bit never sits flat against my chest. No idea what style of bra might work for me. Any ideas?!

Pigflewpast · 21/11/2017 17:56

Thanks MsHarry.
Raving, why would someone who I've asked to fit me be too polite to tell me I need a bigger size? And why would I have today been fitted in a much smaller band? I done care what size band I need as long as it fits!

Pigflewpast · 21/11/2017 17:56

*dont care

Even supermodels will have this overhang, it’s not always fat and normally just skin.

Tammy do you need the support of the wire? If you don’t I’d try bob underwire.

HappenstanceMarmite · 22/11/2017 00:39

bob underware?

thegamblersmrs · 22/11/2017 06:51

Yes bob underwire, it’s a new brand 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

Oops! I meant non underwire. Not sure what bob would do!!

Lweji · 22/11/2017 07:51

Pigflewpast

You could return to Bravissimo and try some 32Es or even Fs, or 30F and larger.
If you're confident you know what to look for, you don't need an actual fitting, although you can always ask their opinion on how it fits.
I don't go for proper fittings these days.

MsHarry · 22/11/2017 11:25

Not sure how old you are pigflewwest but I'm 46, very slim on top half and still have a bit of skin/flab there. I'm just getting a little slacker I guess and it does get bigger if i put on weight.

berliozwooler · 22/11/2017 11:36

Sorry to hijack - when would the bra experts say you need to go down a back size - when you can put the bra on the tightest notch and it still rides up at the back?

MsHarry · 22/11/2017 11:40

Riding up sounds like a band that's too tight. Measure firmly under the bust and round up or down to nearest bra size. e.g I'm 31.5 so wear a 32.
