I know I am being unreasonable but I really do dislike it and can't quite articulate why.
Prefer to choose my charities rather than have it thrust down my throat I suppose.
Anyone else?

I like Comic Relief and and I do donate to CiN because I like the charities involved however I think the Children in Need TV show is really badly done and always has been.

Bubblebubblepop · 17/11/2017 21:53

I didn't say anything. I asked what part of what Cathy described wasn't available from the government

That local charity is more than likely CIN funded somewhere and yes it seems odd that children who might be in need but it boosts childrens esteem if they are involved in stuff.

TeachesOfPeaches · 17/11/2017 22:04

I've never watched it before but have been in tears all night. I have a 2yo and feel so sad that these children are suffering. There's so much pain in the world and it devastates me to think that children go through more than I feel I could cope with.

AlloAllloAllo · 17/11/2017 22:05

Fucking wrong the lot of you!!

CHILDREN IN NEED FFS!!

cathyclown · 17/11/2017 22:06

@Bubble I am sorry I wasn't having a go at you personally, but you need to ask that question of those with vulnerable children. Are they getting all the taxpayer funded services they need.

Are teenage kids getting help, you know from MH services etc.

Are elderly getting all they need too. I think they are largely forgotten.

All very well and good that children get extra help, but the rest of society can languish and wait, and wait ad infinitum for help. That is because big shows like CIN are not interested in anything else other than cuddly children in need. No one else need apply.

Bubblebubblepop · 17/11/2017 22:07

Oh right. Your post stuck out because it was very "in my vunderful country everything is perfect and you poor plebs have to have a big fat fundraiser yearly to provide basic care to children"

Which is frustrating, patronising, and doesn't come from a place of knowdlege, as you yourself admit

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 17/11/2017 22:19

Anne Robinson described as Edna ode... even laughing ever since. So so true. So heartbreaking stories tonight though.

TeachesOfPeaches · 17/11/2017 22:20

Fuming that Giles Coren is on the show after his vile article describing his son as fat and retarded looking.

cathyclown · 17/11/2017 22:21

@Bubble.

It is not perfect at all where I am, but it is quite good.

And I have never seen a TV Fest like CIN here ever.

We would cringe TBH.

fartyghost · 17/11/2017 22:22

Given that, the last we heard, they had raised 33 million I doubt that they will miss your contribution OP.

Bubblebubblepop · 17/11/2017 22:23

Germany?

LizzieSiddal · 17/11/2017 22:25

Teaches I expect this will have been recorded before that disgusting article was published.

southeastdweller · 17/11/2017 22:26

All these self-righteous celebs, avoiding paying what they should in taxes - maybe if they did we wouldn't need CiN to pay for necessary services that our government should be providing?

Very much agree. And, as usual, at least half of the celebs participating have new projects they're (indirectly) promoting.

Can someone provide a link about where exactly all the money goes, please? It's something that CIN don't like to publicise...

manicinsomniac · 17/11/2017 22:28

YABVU

It's not a tv programme I'd be interested in watching personally but money being raised to benefit children and young people is not a bad thing!!

I've been reading through some of the charities benefitting on the link posted upthread and the ones near me are fabulous local charities which are well known and supported here year round - but they are never going to get £71,000 (that's what the one nearest to me had last year from CIN) from a single event.

CIN gives a national and public fundraising platform to hundreds of local charities with limited renown. That's a great thing.

I agree that charity should not absolve the government from caring for the vulnerable and supplying what they need but most of the charities in the list are things that are fabulous and beneficial but not essential - theatre groups, support groups, talking therapy, day trips, sports activities etc. No government could find the funds to pay for everything that would be a good, positive thing for vulnerable children - that's a role that charities can (and should) take on.

TeachesOfPeaches · 17/11/2017 22:29

How do you know the celebrities haven't donated in private?

mirime · 17/11/2017 22:34

"Can someone provide a link about where exactly all the money goes, please? It's something that CIN don't like to publicise..."

Google it. I just did, there were downloads listing the organisations funded. They usually show clips on the programme of some of the projects funded. It's not a big secret.

CoolCarrie · 17/11/2017 22:34

Look how generous George Michael was, that was kept very quiet until after his death. I would like to think that the famous people on the show do contribute.

Bubblebubblepop · 17/11/2017 22:34

Exactly southeastdweller? You want to know exactly where £50ish million quid has gone? 🤔

Catsize · 17/11/2017 22:36

I’ve watched quite a bit of the programme this evening and have been in floods of tears.

I can only hope that the families involved do not read some of the insensitive posts on here.

I’m not sure how raising millions of £ for charity (as opposed to Simon Cowell for example) can be seen as a bad thing.

Don’t like it? Don’t watch it. Simple.

I don’t agree with loads of stuff on TV do I don’t watch it. And none of the stuff I disagree with raises much-needed funding for deserving causes.

southeastdweller · 17/11/2017 22:36

Yes, I think that's a fair question to ask, don't you?

Italiangreyhound · 17/11/2017 22:37

You don't have to wactch or give. YABVU.

LillyGrinter · 17/11/2017 22:37

Well said Catsize.
