I know I am being unreasonable but I really do dislike it and can't quite articulate why.
Prefer to choose my charities rather than have it thrust down my throat I suppose.
Anyone else?

Well, that's a political question, @cathyclown

Children In Need
NSPCC
Save the Children UK

You could list dozens of large charities that deal with vulnerable people in the UK, one of the richest countries in the world. Children who are living in poverty, or are abused, at risk, not accessing their healthcare needs. It is an abject failure of this state that any of these charities are required... but they are. They're desperately needed. it should be an embarrassment to every MP, every day. Make them hear it.

RozDeek · 17/11/2017 19:56

You will not see a TV program for Adults or Elderly in need, even though cutbacks mean they need help too, precisely because there is no pull factor there, they are not cute needy children. It is a scam.

FGS it's not a "scam". That's what charities DO. They pull on heartstrings precisely so people will donate.

I'm not saying it's right but take that one up with society!

RozDeek · 17/11/2017 19:57

And of course we shouldn't need it, but it's hardly CIN's fault the government doesn't give a shiny shit about the vulnerable.

Bubblebubblepop · 17/11/2017 19:57

"Today 18:43 cathyclown

Where does the money donated go? All I see every day are reports of abused, injured and often murdered children. And no resources for SS and child mental health services and counselling stretched to the limit and all the rest of it.

Sorry folks. I know the intentions are good. But millions are raised every year. I know that amount will not solve the problems of our health services, but I still get a spidey feeling somewhere in my gut."

Do you really think the need to help vulnerable people will ever go away? The most vulnerable people in our society are much better off than vulnerable people (or most people) in the Congo. Should we just stop trying? No, got raise standards constantly.

Bubblebubblepop · 17/11/2017 19:58

No we should raise standards constantly that should say

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 17/11/2017 19:58

It’s NOT a scam.

Sadly children ha e always had the pull that adults don’t.

As a nurse I worked a lot with elderly patients and they really are the Cinderella of charity support but just as needy.

I am so happy that there is support for next Children at a time of so many cuts though.

Agustarella · 17/11/2017 19:59

YANBU. It's the way it's become quasi-compulsory at schools etc that sucks.

NecklessMumster · 17/11/2017 19:59

My family think I'm hard cos I dont cry at the sad stories, i just feel manipulated and it's crude. But I work in adult social services and see sad stuff everyday so I think I'm cross that people need to be told.

Yarboosucks · 17/11/2017 19:59

What a nasty thread! CIN a scam??? FFS, what a poisonous comment!

mirime · 17/11/2017 20:01

I work in the voluntary sector and know of some charities that have received funding for projects from CIN and they've done a lot of good work with that money.

I'm not interested watching it but I usually donate something, if nothing else it gives less media friendly or high profile charities a chance at getting some funding while at the same time it should be putting some safeguards in place that the money will be spent as it should be - putting in funding bids and providing all the evaluation and stats to prove you're doing the work makes you really think about about what you want a achieve and how you're going to achieve it.

cathyclown · 17/11/2017 20:02

This kind of hoo haa on the TV should not be required at all. The cost of the production alone is massive, but I hope the BBC are covering that and not deducting it from the donations.

But it seems that this kind of mass donation IS required, as some of you have intimated, well then it should encompass ALL those in need, on a rotational basis, one year kids, one year adults, one year elderly.

Hmm.

RozDeek · 17/11/2017 20:03

cathy your quarrel is with society. People don't want to donate to the elderly. They want, by and large, to donate to children and the elderly.

RozDeek · 17/11/2017 20:03

And animals that should say.

Bubblebubblepop · 17/11/2017 20:05

Exactly. They're just getting the money they can. If people were willing to pay much higher taxes and eradicate charity work, or were naturally charitable, they wouldn't have things like this.

Fairenuff · 17/11/2017 20:07

Posting under the title 'Am I Being Unreasonable' with the OP 'I know I am being unreasonable' is just stupid.

Post in 'Chat' you numpty.

cathyclown · 17/11/2017 20:07

Roz,

I know, that is why I think such shows are very manipulative. Society as a whole needs a lot more pumped into it.

But as someone upthread said, my comments are societal/political. Yes they are, there should be no need for anything as manipulative as this in a First World Country.

We should be totally ashamed of ourselves really.

londonrach · 17/11/2017 20:07

Agree op. Ive ignored it for years now. Didnt realise it was on today until you mention it. Not been advertised much.

mrsBeverleyGoldberg · 17/11/2017 20:09

Millionaires telling me to hand over my money. They should hand over their money!

cathyclown · 17/11/2017 20:09

Roz,

That was you saying about society and politics, sorry!

TheFirstMrsDV · 17/11/2017 20:11

Children's Hospices benefit from CIN.
Yes they should be funded by the government but they are not.
So until they are (and feel free to write to your MP) we need charities like CIN to pay for palliative care for children.

RozDeek · 17/11/2017 20:11

Many of those millionaires DO hand over their £££.

The rich asking the poor to donate as usual. Disgusting

BuzzKillington · 17/11/2017 20:12

We watched 5 minutes and switched off once some precocious stage school kids started screeching a song from Annie. Excruciating.

Dh did donate though.

Marriedwithchildren5 · 17/11/2017 20:14

Agree. Rich people self servicing themselves. Most of whom do not pay tax. Makes me pissed off 2!
