Vaseline makes lips worse

AIBU?

So I have been using vaseline for a couple of weeks just because mine and DDs lips seemed a little dry. Well every time I try to stop using it, my lips go really sore and red, which makes me want to put more vaseline on. It feels like a vicious circle! I need to go cold turkey I think so my lips can get back to normal. Has anyone else found this?

Yes Vaseline makes my lips worse. I'm allergic to lanolin and sensitive to petroleum based products.

My lip balm on choice is Jack Black intense therapy lip balm - expensive but so blimmin good!

RhiannonOHara · 17/11/2017 19:34

Please tell me that's Jack Black as in High Fidelity/School of Rock. Grin

RhiannonOHara · 17/11/2017 19:34

Oh, weird italic/triangle things...

ChickenVindaloo2 · 17/11/2017 20:25

Surely it's like using moisturiser - if you use it every day eventually your skin won't produce as much of it's own natural oils so you end up in a vicious cycle?

Nope. Lips don't have oil glands so never produce any oils anyway.

Militant old blue lypsyl fan here, it is the ultimate chapped lip lifesaver. Not the Apple or the strawberry, they don’t work. It’s so hard to get hold of now. Vaseline works for dry lips and making them smooth, but can’t cure chapped lips.

peppykoala · 17/11/2017 20:37

Totally agree with the PP who said dry lips were a symptom of overall dehydration - I used to use lip balm all the time (never Vaseline, I never really 'got' it) but realised recently that since starting to be really aware of not letting myself get dehydrated in general I've hardly used any.

When I do use some (usually just if I'm running in the cold!) then it's always Blistex Intensive Moisturiser (the cherry one) which is super moisturising.

londonrach · 17/11/2017 20:42

Vaseline is the only thing that works...fact. After spending a fortune on lip solves etc i was advised vaseline was the best. 12 years later and use every day i totally agree. Prior to vaseline i had cracks side of my mouth, dry peeling lips etc. Now they perfect.

MsJudgemental · 17/11/2017 20:44

I use Blistex (used to be Blisteze)

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/11/2017 20:46

I swear by Burt's bees in the yellow tube.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/11/2017 20:47

Or Astral moisturister in the big blue tub, just slap it on everywhere.

OhOurBilly · 17/11/2017 20:49

Lansinoh, the cracked nipple cream. It was good enough for my boobs, it had worked wonders on my dry, chapped lips. I've had a stinking cold this week and I put it on my nose where it had gone sore through blowing it.

ginteresting · 17/11/2017 20:53

Agree lansinoh is wonder stuff! But I’m too tight to pay that price on lips unless it’s lipstick. Nipples on the other hand...

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 17/11/2017 20:54

So carmax, nivea etc will do the same.

Actually, the blue Nivea Original Care isn't petroleum based which is the reason I use it. It's also very cheap at about £1.50! Best budget non-petroleum lip balm I've found

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 17/11/2017 20:54

In fact, the only budget non-petroleum lip balm I've found!

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 17/11/2017 20:58

Ok - so I've just realised it does have a paraffin derivative in Blushbut it actually works!

OhOurBilly · 17/11/2017 21:02

In fairness, I got the tube this time last year, I used it for the first week of breastfeeding, didn't like it on my nips so bought a different nipple cream, and have been using it as as lip balm since.

It's still got at least six months left on it. Breastfeeding baby is one next week, I've offset the initial being annoyed that it just made my perfect, tiny baby's entire face sticky against a year of constant use as value in my mind Grin

elephantoverthehill · 17/11/2017 21:06

For me, Hc 45 cream, I know hydrocortisone is not recommended on faces but my GP told me to go and buy it as it cheaper than a script and I do suffer from eczema in cold or hot temperatures. The dry lips are a sympton of this.

GinisLife · 17/11/2017 21:45

Vaseline is one step removed from petrol - petroleum jelly. It's addictive so the more you use the more you need it. You need to go cold turkey and find something more natural, moisturising and better for you. No idea what though as I never need it.

NashvilleQueen · 17/11/2017 21:50

I’ve used Vaseline for years and love it.

I’m quite tempted by Lansinoh. It was so amazing when BF’g

spankhurst · 17/11/2017 21:51

Yy re hydration. My life changed when I realised this. I almost never have chapped lips now.

HelenaDove · 17/11/2017 21:57

I sometimes use Nivea Original Care.

Am currently using Boots new one Your Good Skin soothing lip balm. £5 (i got it for £3.22 on its introductory offer. Its lovely.

HelenaDove · 17/11/2017 21:58

my bottom lip gets a bit dry sometimes but not chapped. Its my hands that tend to suffer in the winter.

Starlighter · 17/11/2017 22:02

Hate Vaseline! It’s just a barrier, not a moisturiser.

I swear by blistex daily conditioner.

derenstar · 17/11/2017 22:06

It’s all about burts bees. Used to use carmex but burts bees really is the bees knees

mellowout · 17/11/2017 22:11

Burt’s Bees lip balm is really good. Aveeno lotion if really chapped it’s brilliant for any dry/chapped skin.
