Vaseline makes lips worse

AIBU?

So I have been using vaseline for a couple of weeks just because mine and DDs lips seemed a little dry. Well every time I try to stop using it, my lips go really sore and red, which makes me want to put more vaseline on. It feels like a vicious circle! I need to go cold turkey I think so my lips can get back to normal. Has anyone else found this?

It's the petroleum. It just coats the lips, doesn't actually moisturize/repair. Dries them out so you keep using. Burts bees ones work brilliantly imo.

Zambuk! There's a blast from the past.
Things that work for me -Carmex, Korres lip balm, burts bees, blistex in the little metal tube, snowfire, palmers. Vaseline I think I once read, actually takes the moisture from your lips. You can spot the kids at school that use it-they all have the red ring around their lips.

tealandteal · 17/11/2017 16:40

I find vaseline does the same, burts bees is a definite recommendation from me!

Flah if your lips are super flakey then a good exfoliant before moisturiser works well. I find the Lush ones ok, but the best is some kind of acid based exfoliant (Pixi Glow Tonic/pads, First Aid Beauty daily radiance pads, The Ordinary acids) a few times a week/every day, then a good lip butter/balm

Yellow soft paraffin, in tubes you can get from pharmacies or online. I was given a tube when in hospital once and it lasted years.
It’s like Vaseline but actually moisturises and is super cheap. I never use anything else now!

The Nuxe lip balm in a jar is amazing. 20% off it in M&S just now too if you have a Sparks card.

On the cheaper end of the scale I just bought the Primark overnight lipbalm to try - think it was £2, contains lanolin and different butters and is pretty good for the price.

My ds suffers from really sore lips if he does not drink enough

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 17/11/2017 17:05

YANBU, I’ve found this with most lip products.

Agree that Blistex is best or Burts Bees

ChickenVindaloo2 · 17/11/2017 18:02

Like a previous poster, I was on Roaccutane.
The no1 recommended lipbalm for those of us on this drug is:

"Yellow soft paraffin"

Paraffin is derived from petroleum though isn't it? So will have the same effect. Like aqueous cream.

I have had success with beeswax, used at night.

I gave up all lip balm about 5 years ago as I was addicted to Vasaline. Really sore for a week or so then cleared up. Now I just use a bit of face moisturiser if my lips get dry. If I use any lip balm it makes my lips worse.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 17/11/2017 18:15

Molton Brown lip saver Is the best and a tube lasts forever. Vaseline makes no difference at all

FinallyHere · 17/11/2017 18:24

Dry lips is an earl sign of dehydration, as taught in recent first aid classes. Drink more.

Anything you put in your lips helps only to slow the rate at which water is evaporating, fixing the problem at our e by drinking more water is the way forward.

ProseccoMamam · 17/11/2017 18:26

Vaseline acts as a barrier not a moisturiser. You need a lip balmSmile

StepAwayFromGoogle · 17/11/2017 18:29

Another vote for Nivea cream in the little blue pot. Really moisturises and keeps lips lovely and soft. Don't need to apply it very often at all.

efeslight · 17/11/2017 18:37

I love Elizabeth arden 8 hour cream for dry skin and lips. Its expensive, but lasts for years...

kmc1111 · 17/11/2017 18:38

Vaseline will lock in moisture by creating a barrier. It's great for that. Not so great if you have no moisture to lock in.

Use a proper moisturising lip balm, and put Vaseline over that.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 17/11/2017 18:40

Vaseline is awful for drying lips out more. Try the Body Shop's Hemp lip balm to break the Vaseline cycle!

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 17/11/2017 18:41

Anything petroleum based is the same as Vaseline. You need something wax or seed oil based.

Nutellalovesme · 17/11/2017 18:57

As someone else mentioned Palmers coco butter lip balm is moisturising and leaves lips feeling soft and smooth also the blue nivea one is just as good it looks like a lipstick

caffeinequick · 17/11/2017 19:03

I get exactly this with Vaseline so stopped using it on my lips. Burts beeswax wins for me :)

kali110 · 17/11/2017 19:12

any product with petroleum in will do this.

kali110 · 17/11/2017 19:13

So carmax, nivea etc will do the same.

Titsywoo · 17/11/2017 19:16

Surely it's like using moisturiser - if you use it every day eventually your skin won't produce as much of it's own natural oils so you end up in a vicious cycle?

scrabble1 · 17/11/2017 19:16

Blistex is fab
