Paddington and ebay

Feeling fed up of people's greed.
Just tried to unsuccessfully buy a Paddington bear in M&S. Sold out.
Looked on ebay for other Paddingtons and discovered a hefty price war bidding for the same bear!
Why are people so greedy! They have obviously not bought the bear as a present and are using it to generate money.
I know this often happens at Christmas but it seriously pisses me off!

Sorry can't take seriously someone who spells their user name incorrectly.(Hilarious?)
Hmm

kali110 · 16/11/2017 13:22

You should have got there sooner.
People will make money anyway they can.
It's not their faiult they were quicker.

worlybear · 16/11/2017 13:26

Again- thank you for the Paddington bear links.
I stand by my original statement that there are a lot of selfish and self-serving people around.
I don't need to chill thanks- I just reserve the right to hold an opinion- sorry if that offends anyone .

As long as you are talking about non-essential items, there's nothing greedy or selfish. I find people selling over-priced medicine or sold out formula horrible, because the buyer have no choice, and someone has stocked up on purpose.

When you are talking about a toy.. a handbag or a pair of shoes, you are unreasonable. You don't need them, there are plenty of alternatives. It would be silly for people not to make money when someone is prepared to pay over the top. If M&S receive a big stock, the ebay-seller will make a loss.

expatinscotland · 16/11/2017 13:57

Aldi only allows 2 Kevin the Carrots per customer because of people doing this.

Sallystyle · 16/11/2017 14:09

It is horrible. However, i'm a hypocrite because I bought one this morning on Ebay.

It happens every year without fail. One of my girls wanted something else that is sold out but is selling on Ebay for £20 extra. I wasn't happy to spend £30 on a slime science thingy but I didn't mind paying extra for Paddington.

Someoneasdumbasthis · 16/11/2017 14:30

It’s called supply and demand.

SendintheArdwolves · 16/11/2017 14:39

Ah, the traditional MN wig-out about capitalism Grin It's as reliable as the "why are men allowed to take their tops off" on the first sunny day of summer, and "Sorry to mention Christmas but..." in mid-August.

Is it unreasonable? Well, it is the logic product of an economic system that prioritises profit and relies on creating useless items which people strongly desire. People get their knickers in a twist because WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE POOR SAD CHILDRENZ but since this is the world we've created for them, they might as well learn its rules early.

Ask yourself this, OP: let's say you inherited an antique, that had no intrinsic value, but was worth a vast amount to collectors because of its rarity. Your great-great-grandfather bought it in 1908 for five shillings, but now similar items go for thousands of pounds. Would you accept twenty-five pence for it "because that's what it cost to buy new" or would you accept that changing conditions had changed the value of the object?

CountessofGrantham · 16/11/2017 14:52

There are loads in John Lewis, you couldn’t move for them yesterday. What’s so special about the M&S ones?

pinkmagic1 · 16/11/2017 15:06

It is called being entrepreneurial.

Splinterz · 16/11/2017 15:08

Aww did the OP throw her dollies out of the pram?

LesDennishair · 16/11/2017 15:20

There's a thread about this in the Christmas topic, OP. Had no idea M & S Paddington was one of the 'most wanted' toys,

Hillarious · 16/11/2017 15:44

Had no idea M & S Paddington was one of the 'most wanted' toys

If it wasn't, it probably is now. Is the OP is possibly an eBayer wanting to get rid of stock?

LifeLaundry · 16/11/2017 16:05

The John Lewis one is by far the nicest. He's wearing wellies! I don't understand why anyone would prefer the M&S one.

I wanted a welly wearing Paddington so much when so was a little girl.

worlybear · 16/11/2017 17:53

Just looked back on the thread. Christ there's some unpleasant people about!
Peace and love to all

Unless there's a massive backstory, it never hurts any child to discover that they cannot have every single toy they want. If they miss out on Paddington, they can get it for their birthday if they are that keen. So not a big deal.

Splinterz · 16/11/2017 18:02

Christ there's some unpleasant people about!

All I have to say to that is pot-kettle-black

Why are people so greedy! They have obviously not bought the bear as a present and are using it to generate money.

worlybear · 16/11/2017 18:08

Again-look at ebay. Merry Christmas!

OP posts:
yumscrumfatbum · 16/11/2017 18:11

I was behind a woman in M & S earlier in the week who bought 200 Paddington Christmas tree decorations! 200! Either she is selling them on or she buys for a gift for a whole workforce!

Really? I can't see any horrible comments just telling you that yabu.Confused
If there are, report.

Kevin the carrot is a thing???

StripySocksAndDocs · 16/11/2017 19:30

Why is sarcasm considered to be the lowest form of wit?

It takes a good bit of imagination really. Plus if it was that low surely everyone would get it.

Wonder if you can get Paddington marmalade. Off to check eBay ...

Scholes34 · 16/11/2017 22:51

Can't see anything exciting on the marmalade front on eBay. Perhaps there's an opportunity there for someone to make lots of money. Does Paddington like any particular brand?

MamaPhoneHome · 16/11/2017 22:54

I have to agree.

My kids have asked for 1 thing each.
D's a sloth fingerling and D'd a unicorn one.

Both exclusive to separate toy shops and I've actually been laughed at by a TRU employee when asking if they have any.

But eBay is full of them being sold at double the price. Which I can't afford and I can't use my Love TO shop vouchers on eBay :(

MamaPhoneHome · 16/11/2017 22:56

It just seems incredibly mean to buy up children's toys and double the price for them, making them inaccessible to some children that might have gotten them from the toy shop shelf otherwise.

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 16/11/2017 23:01

Hamleys had masses at the weekend. They do online I think x
