To feed my evening guests chips and cake...

We’re getting married on a tight budget next summer...

Reception is a mega chilled informal affair... we’re having a late afternoon wedding and not having a formal sit down dinner but having big pans of Paella/street food type stuff, then Eaton mess for dessert...

The trouble is, we have quite a few extras coming in the evening (small ceremony venue & met at work so loads of colleagues!) and I’m really stuck for what to feed people later in the evening!

I was thinking of fish and chip shop chips wrapped in paper cones... wedding cake, maybe some bread and cheese? It’s a seaside wedding so thought this could be fun! BUT it’s then a lot of shitty food!

Any other ideas very welcome... whole wedding budget is 4K so trying to keep costs down but I obviously don’t want hungry guests!

We had a fancy buffet for ours which went down a treat. Been to weddings that have had hot roasts before which is normally received well (providing there are proper alternatives for those with different dietary requirements), And husband has been to an evening do with fish and chips that he thoroughly enjoyed

*hog

Mooey89 · 15/11/2017 23:27

Trouble with hog roast is I’m a vegetarian!
Fish and chips I can cope with as I’ll just have an alternative but have told DP I can’t have a rotating animal carcass at my wedding Grin

Bacon/sausage baps/barms/rolls or whatever you call them where you live, and bowls of chips.

Floellabumbags · 15/11/2017 23:28

I'd do the bread, cheese, pickles etc etc thing and cake. It's an evening do, not a dinner party.

ScipioAfricanus · 15/11/2017 23:29

I think fish and chips would be great for evening guests. We only had one set of guests but I was a bit paranoid about feeding them enough because I have been to many weddings without enough food. We did mini hamburgers in the evening and wedding cake and a lot didn’t get eaten so maybe not everyone gets as hungry as me! However if they’d been just evening guests I think they’d have eaten more as wouldn’t have had three course wedding breakfast in the afternoon.

Insomnibrat · 15/11/2017 23:29

People won't care, I went to a farm style wedding which had a hotdog and fish & chip van out in the courtyard for evening guests. People loved it, and it was ideal for little ones.

GabsAlot · 15/11/2017 23:30

fish and chips is great my dsis done it for evening guests

Hotheadwheresthecoldbath · 15/11/2017 23:31

Ask everyone to bring a dish, you supply baguettes, butter ,cheese.Or BBQ.

ColonelJackONeil · 15/11/2017 23:31

I think they will love that. Yes to an alternative for other vegetarians and special diets.

NamasteNiki · 15/11/2017 23:32

Shit op can i come?

Sounds fab Grin

Lily2007 · 15/11/2017 23:34

I think fish and chips is fine esp by the sea. Maybe do fruit instead of bread and cheese or do mushy peas, baked beans, bread and butter as sides for fish and chips and skip the cheese to make it a bit healthier.

Atticusss · 15/11/2017 23:35

Fish and chips would be great! last wedding I went to had a very posh sit down meal, lots of courses, each table had their own person to refill drinks, then later in the evening handed bacon butties round on silver platters. That was a good shout! Fish and chips is perfect.

Izzy24 · 15/11/2017 23:36

I think fish and chips would be great, but won’t it still be quite expensive?

tracymars · 15/11/2017 23:38

I went to a wedding recently that had hot dogs and fries in the evening. I was still too stuffed from the tapas style dinner to have any. But they seemed to go down really well with the newly arrived evening guests. And with that you can have veggie hot dog option

Bambamber · 15/11/2017 23:39

If go with fish and chips then, lots of people love fish and chips by the seaside. How about also offering things like jacket potatoes with some salad bits

ILoveDolly · 15/11/2017 23:40

At my wedding we had cheese board, fruit and cake. It was very nice with lovely bread and pickle etc. All the older men went nuts over it. I think it was my dad's favourite bit of the whole reception. Confused

Feliciaxxx · 15/11/2017 23:50

We had a burger van type affair at my DD's 21st - he sold all manner of stuff including crepes! Was very well received.

calzone · 15/11/2017 23:52

Having been to 3 utterly shite weddings this year, I would have gladly welcomed fish and chips and cake.

Your guests will love it!

Efnisien · 15/11/2017 23:52

Fish 'n' chips sounds fab!Ice cream van for pud Wink

fairislecable · 15/11/2017 23:54

I went to a wedding which had a fish and chip van it seemed like a good idea but it took ages to serve everyone and the quality of the food was very poor.

I also went to one which had Cornish pasties delivered all hot and ready to eat that went down very well. There were also vegetarian ones.

DancingOnParsnips · 15/11/2017 23:59

I think OP meant just chips, not fish too. I hope no guests are low carbing. Maybe stick a salad in there somewhere.

southboundagain · 16/11/2017 00:01

As long as there's something like chip forks rather than treating it like canapes (else I'd be wiping greasy hands on nice wedding clothes), sounds lovely! I've also seen a lot of cheese boards in the evening which also work well.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 16/11/2017 00:04

I think it’s a great idea. Just make sure you do your research on their ability to serve good F&C to a large number. It’s worth paying that bit more for a van with a good reputation.

They might offer something like fish bites & chips instead of a full fish & chip meal. Proper fish, just smaller pieces as it’s easier to handle standing up & cheaper.

HermionesRightHook · 16/11/2017 00:05

We had fish and chips in little cones for the evening for everyone, it was lovely. Go for it. People just want a snack at that point, especially if the main meal was earlyish.
