To wish there was some sort of regulation to prevent idiots like this having pets?

At the end of August a woman posted in a local group I am in on FB asking for advice. She wanted a dog but her husband didn’t. She had got one a year ago but her DH rehomed it 3 months later. She was advised not to risk it happening again, consider fostering, borrow my dog etc. 3 weeks later she got a puppy. That was 8 weeks ago. I’ve just seen an ad on local FB selling page. She is selling the pup for £300 because it licks her daughter and jumps up. Hmm

This boils my piss. The woman is thick as champ. There was no getting through to her on her post asking for advice. I have no doubt in my mind she will have another pup in less than a year and have it for sale not long after.

There should be some sort of regulation to prevent people being able to buy dogs willy nilly and shunt them from pillar to post because they haven’t the foggiest idea what raising a dog involves.

aaaahhh those lovely few weeks where its a lovely bundle of joy and its all new and the kids love it.... then the novelty wears off, its not taken out enough so poos and wees all over the house which is all the dogs fault for not toilet training itself, the children are bored of it licking their faces and chewing their toys, after weeks of the children shouting it and laughing at it jumping up, its that bit bigger and hurts when it jumps up.

There should be more thought goes into buying an animal.... our puppy has been a nightmare but we've stood firm with rules and training and at a year we're seeing a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. I don't know what or how regulations an be policed... nut YANBU to be annoyed at this.

Bambamber · 15/11/2017 19:56

I know someone that is allergic to the fur of most aninals. So most people of reasonable intellect would not get anything furry, or if really can't live without one, would just take anti allergy meds and put up with it. But no. She buys an animal then months later rehones it as her symptoms are too bad. Then within weeks, gets bored, so buys another furry animal that she is equally allergic too. And so the cycle goes on. I'm not sure if she really is as stupid as makes herself seem, or if she plays on the whole airhead thing.

But yes, people like that should never be allowed pets.

LakieLady · 15/11/2017 19:56

Can you kidnap her and tattoo the words "Do not sell me a puppy because I am as thick as as mince" on her forehead?

mustbemad17 · 15/11/2017 19:56

This is why so many people get pups for christmas...conveniently forgetting that they grow up & are shits unless you, you know, make the effort.

Detest people like that & unfortunately for them I am very vocal when I see it. I've seen what happens to FTGH/sold to anyone with the money pets; i could skin morons alive

Grin yes!! This should be compulsory for people like her!

The same is sadly often true of kittens. They don’t stay cute little things for all that long and children are prone to lose interest. My DDs used to love our now 3 year old Tom cat. But he was a cute kitten then, now he’s a big bruiser of a cat. (A gentle giant though! Smile)

Ttbb · 15/11/2017 20:11

Yes, or at the very least holding pet owners accountable for their pets?

paddypants13 · 15/11/2017 20:14

A relative of mine has just got a puppy. There were pics of the poor little sod all over FB. I really, really wanted to comment and ask what happened to her last dog... (I genuinely don't know what happened to the other dog. I imagine she was badly trained and not exercised so became badly behaved and was rehomed.) Why the fuck get another puppy when you couldn't cope with the last one you fuckwit? Angry

ThePinkOcelot · 16/11/2017 17:38

This annoys me too! It’s the same with birds. People just expect parrots to all speak and be funny and when they find out they don’t all talk and can be extremely noisy and messy, they give them up!

Rebeccaslicker · 16/11/2017 17:39

People should need licences for pets! Stories like this make me see red.

Tedster77 · 16/11/2017 17:47

I work with very chaotic families etc and it's VERY hard seeing the animal situation is some houses. I'm not there for the animals but it can break your heart.

I went to one today where they've gone through 5 or 6 cats in the last year, frequently have no money for electric, really struggle to feed themselves and VOILA I'm greeted by a puppy.

Fb selling sites seem to make it so easy to 'pick up a pet' on a whim.

I had a domestic incident where the woman had battered her husband because he'd gone out to get a takeaway and come back with a snake in a viv.....

Namechangetempissue · 16/11/2017 17:52

I'm with you OP.
A family at our primary school regularly turn up with a new puppy, or the mum posts on FB/insta with a pic of their "new baby" kitten/hamster/chick etc etc etc. They invariably get rid of EVERY one within 6 months and I am not exaggerating. It makes me rage.

I know I shouldn't have, but this made me lol!

Gingernaut · 16/11/2017 18:16

This boils my piss and it's one of my soapbox 'ishoos'. I'm afraid I'm in the draconian camp.

No one should be able to buy kittens, puppies or other cute baby animals.

Anyone looking to adopt an animal should only be able to buy adult animals.

Anyone caught selling baby animals needs crucifixtion imprisonment.

A two tier licensing system; Pet Owners and Breeders.

Funding for the system comes from income from licences.

All breeders' licences, like an MOT, should be renewed yearly, depending on inspection of premises and DBS checking of the breeder.

All pets sold to prospective owners should be neutered.

All pet owners should also have a licence.

Prospective breeders and pet owners should face a publican style, court appearance before magistrates/court officials issue the pet/breeding licences.

The licence should specify what animal/s the owner is licenced for and names/name.

No licence should be issued without proof of pet insurance after the first 28 days of ownership.

Every pet, should be checked over by a vet once a year. The licence and ownership of the animal depends on the state of the animal at time of examination.

Anyone selling an unsterilised pet should have to prove they knew the customer was a licensed breeder. Or face the loss of their business/punitive fines/inprisonment.

All bred animals should have a traceable microchip which is updated by the vendor every time it's sold on.

Failure to update the microchip should be prosecutable.

Police spot checks on dog owners should include a chip scan and a check of walkers' ID.

If the microchip doesn't match the walkers' story, the dog should be removed until the registered owner of the pet shows up to explain what's going on.

Professional pet sitters, aviary, cattery and kennels proprietors, dog walkers and other animal keepers should be able to show written proof they have legal possession of the animals in their care.

All animal imports for the pet trade should be banned.

Endangered species imported to zoo breeding programmes already face restrictions but could always do with tighter scrutiny especially after the lynx debacle.

I'll get off my soapbox now. 😶😳😶😳

Gingernaut · 16/11/2017 18:44

Yup. As I thought.

As soon as I unleash the inner tyrant, people shuffle away awkwardly.

Another thread killed. Blush

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 16/11/2017 18:50

Grin gingernaut I agree with every single one of your licence conditions. Yes yes yes!! They should be the bare minimum requirements for owning a live animal.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 16/11/2017 18:54

Haha Ginger, it's usually me.

I know a family which is like this with animals, drives me crazy. The children have grown up seeing pets as disposable toys. Disgusting.

I see them eyeballing our troublesome, aggressive, semi-disabled old dog, no doubt wondering why we don't just "get rid of it".

I reckon they've been through 7 dogs, 3 cats and a few bunnies in the last 19 years. Not one of them died of old age, everything was rehomed when it became inconvenient.

Gingernaut · 16/11/2017 19:00

It's horrible, isn't it?

Round here, staffies are the chav status symbols and I hate it!

MatildaTheCat · 16/11/2017 19:13

Slightly different but today I was in the very busy local town centre with my friend when we saw an absolutely beautiful pup of about 6 months tied to a lamppost. She was some kind of a hound, soft velvety grey coat. She was also displaying signs of extreme anxiety.

We live in an area where dogs are stolen regularly from gardens and parks, never mind being left on the pavement practically given away. So I stayed with her and got her trust and my friend went to look for the owner. After about 15 minutes in total she found him trying on shoes in a charity shop. even then he didn’t come hurrying out.

When he finally pitched up I gave him a stern word on the terrible danger he’d left her in and he made some utterly twattish remark about how she’d have gone with anyone.

Poor dog. I almost wish I’d taken her myself. Angry

katmarie · 16/11/2017 19:18

I agree, there should be a licencing system. Good owners should be able to get a licence with ease, as the conditions you've outlined @Ginger are the very minimum of what a good owner should be doing anyway. I'd go so far as to say owners should also be able to present evidence that they will be able to care properly for the animal, including adequate exercise, nutrition and mental stimulation. That would stop so many people buying dogs and leaving them alone for 9-10 hours a day.

Gingernaut · 16/11/2017 19:19
Sad

Same thing happens round here.

Dogs are stolen for breeding, left outside to howl and bark because they're not housebroken and left tied to lamp posts, bike racks and benches with the owners nowhere to be seen.

It's maddening. Angry

Gingernaut · 16/11/2017 19:21

katmarie, yup. Absolutely.

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 16/11/2017 19:24

My neighbours got a pup a year ago. A tiny white thing. It’s been outside crying every since. All winter. Appalling. I’ve reported it to the council but it has shelter and water so they do nothing.
