To wish there was some sort of regulation to prevent idiots like this having pets?

At the end of August a woman posted in a local group I am in on FB asking for advice. She wanted a dog but her husband didn’t. She had got one a year ago but her DH rehomed it 3 months later. She was advised not to risk it happening again, consider fostering, borrow my dog etc. 3 weeks later she got a puppy. That was 8 weeks ago. I’ve just seen an ad on local FB selling page. She is selling the pup for £300 because it licks her daughter and jumps up. Hmm

This boils my piss. The woman is thick as champ. There was no getting through to her on her post asking for advice. I have no doubt in my mind she will have another pup in less than a year and have it for sale not long after.

There should be some sort of regulation to prevent people being able to buy dogs willy nilly and shunt them from pillar to post because they haven’t the foggiest idea what raising a dog involves.

@Battered why haven't you taken it in I would.

Gingernaut · 16/11/2017 19:33

Same thing happened to me.

Terraced house, overwhelmed mother of toddler twins one side and me the other, kitchen doors face each other through a wooden fence.

Tiny Staffie puppy, possibly taken from her mother too early, thrown out to the yard and left to whine and bark in it's own filth until it's old enough to breed.

The stench was atrocious. Envy

The bitch was so stressed and poorly trained, she chewed the pups and ended up severing the leg off one.

Every time I complained about the flies, stench, noise or the distubing way the dog tried tunnelling through the fence to get to me as I opened my kitchen door, the council would warn the tenant before sending me diaries to fill in.

Of course, she was able to palm the dog off onto someone for the duration of the monitoring period and I would have nothing to report.

The RSPCA could do nothing as the dog had an outdoor cupboard, was fed and had access to water old external toilet

I was so relieved when it went, although there was a brief moment of panic when I saw the three legged dog as it was the spitting image of mum. But Tripod went as well. Eventually. Angry

Oh don't get me started! I'm a vet so I see these fuckwits all the time. It absolutely gives me the rage. When they bring in a Japanese Akita puppy in a pink fluffy jacket and say "she won't get very big, will she" I sometimes have to make an excuse to leave the room and bash my head off the wall. They are brought in for their first vaccine then never seen again. It is the single most depressing part of the job (not euthanasing an elderly pet, as people think!)

I really really think the internet has been the worst thing to ever happen to animals. As long as some idiot can click on a cute picture then rush out to hand over hundreds of pounds to another idiot that same day, with no thought, no research, no vetting process, no contract or comeback, animals will suffer.

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 16/11/2017 19:35

Battered why haven't you taken it in I would.

Grin you really wouldn’t if you had met my neighbours. I’ve had to call the police on them for threatening behaviour. As much as I feel for the dog I am going nowhere near it. They’re scary bastards.

Swizzlesticks23 · 16/11/2017 19:39

I would honestly just take it whilst they are out and rehome. My next door had a dog outside for months before I got fed up climbed the fence and gave it to my brother. He loved her ❤️

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 16/11/2017 19:52

There are neighbours all round who could see me and this is a small town. They would know in no time that it was me. My life wouldn’t be worth living. I would get a criminal record for theft. I have no-one I know who wants a dog. I wouldn’t be qualified to do the right checks for rehoming a pet I have no history on. It could have medical issues or anything.

Sorry Ginger but some of your proposals wouldn't work. I bought a puppy. From a breeder. I wanted a wolfhound and it would be stupid to take on an adult into my child and cat infested house.
She isn't spayed. And can't be until she's 2 at the earliest.
I did however wait over two years. Because I would rather have no dog than one from a puppy farmer.
And YYYYYY to licenses. I think a course on basic dog/puppy husbandry would be really useful. Things like "puppies pee and chew" or "you can't leave a baby puppy at home all day alone."

Swizzlesticks23 · 16/11/2017 19:58

I know I know sorry didn't mean to sound like I was judging you

Gingernaut · 16/11/2017 20:07

So what happens when it grows up?

StealthPolarBear · 16/11/2017 20:15

Isn't it different when it grows with the children and cats?
I know very little about keeping animals other th an they're a huge commitment. So I don't. I feel guilty when I neglect plants!

Wolfiefan · 16/11/2017 20:15

Taking on a puppy and training and setting boundaries and never letting it chase the cats is different to taking on an adult hound that may have a high prey drive, may have had a bad start and could well be terrified of children.

Wolfiefan · 16/11/2017 20:17

All my other animals have been rescues.
I take them on from cradle to grave. They are a commitment I take very seriously. They are loved but are also a huge responsibility.
And giving them up? Not whilst I'm breathing! Trust me I won't change my mind when my beloved hound is grown.

Gingernaut · 16/11/2017 20:21

I didn't say my system was perfect. Blush

Exceptions would have to be made in certain circumstances.

Wolfiefan · 16/11/2017 20:27

The trouble is making a system that allows for certain things but restricts puppy farmers etc.
As a first time dog owner I would be happy to attend training. I would also be glad to sign a contract eg not shutting my dog outside to bark all day and committing to training etc.
Some people should NOT have pets. You're absolutely right.

MycatsaPirate · 16/11/2017 20:38

YANBU, this drives me fucking insane.

I know a woman got a boxer puppy, living in a flat. Didn't do any research into the breed and anyone who knows even a tiny bit about boxers is that they are full of energy. They didn't bother training it, it got bigger and bigger and more destructive because it was bored, It got two 10 minute walks around the block a day on the path. No chance to burn off it's energy. Then because it was chewing stuff they crated it all the time. So then it would chew the blanket, piss and shit in the crate, throw up etc.

They couldn't make the connection with the lack of training/exercise/interaction and the behaviours it was displaying.

She wanted to put it up for free on gumtree but I organised for Boxer Welfare to collect him so that they made sure he went to a home who where they understood boxer behaviour.

A month later they bought another puppy.....

StumpyScot92 · 16/11/2017 20:42

I volunteer in animal rescue as a transporter/home checker and fosterer (although I'm now a double "failed foster" mother because I adopted them haha) and some of the excuses I get when I have to go collect animals being handed over is painful... Miraculously I have managed to smile and nod each time to get the animal safe and not whack any idiots. One woman got a call, didn't get a litter tray and complained that 'the dirty wee fucker keeps doing the toilet on my carpet'. Yes. Because you haven't given him a toilet you moron! She just assumed he would go outside.
Collected so so so many dogs because they cast fur. Yep. Get a hoover and get off your backside.
Collected six cats from a family because 'the kids are more into reptiles now'. Like they're trading Pokémon.
Been threatened from saying no to passing homechecks when I went to visit and they claimed to have no animals yet there was animal shit all over the house and by others because before I even visit them I've found posts of them rehoming animals every few months on Facebook like they're getting new curtains.
People can be cunts when it comes to pets and I totally agree with ginger about the licensing ideas.
(The only one that wouldn't work for me is the walking the dog address clause, a lot of my family and friends 'borrow' my dog if they have a big walk planned etc because they love her and can't have their own for various reasons 😂)

AccidentlyRunToWindsor · 16/11/2017 20:55

Yes yes yes to the licences @Gingernaut makes me so angry on Facebook people flogging their latest pet because ‘they don’t have time’ well you knew that when you got the animal.

My cats are stuck with me for life, poor sods. Mind you, DCat2 is currently sat next to me biting her toenails and if she keeps it up I may reconsider...

Maelstrop · 16/11/2017 21:07

Blimey, gingernaut, you feeling better now?!

I don't agree that only adult dogs should be available for adoption. Who's going to fund a litter of potentially 15 pups til they're adults? And much like in the equine world, law abiding people have passported their horses, others have not, so the system is very flawed. Also, I want a pup to train up, it's far easier to have the way I want.

monkeywithacowface · 16/11/2017 21:11

My neighbour had a dog that was several years old and when she fell pregnant the dog was re-homed. Now her dd is at school apparently it would be nice to have a dog around again and voila a fashionable crossbreed from an obvious backyard breeder has appeared.

MycatsaPirate · 16/11/2017 22:39

We had 2 cats when we moved into our house two years ago. We now have five. Two were direct rehoming from people that could no longer care bother with the cats. One from a couple that had a baby - they said the baby is allergic but having since seen photos of said child with various animals I suspect it's a case of cat no longer wanted now baby is here. The other one came from a few doors up because they threw it out. The reason given was 'he keeps shitting and pissing all over the place'. Given that she was barely home to let him out and he didn't have a litter tray I'm not surprised. He's been with us since August and is a gorgeous cat who is quite capable of using a litter tray because there are three in the house. He is 13 and we are his 5th owners. Makes me so sad.

We also have a foster cat. She's a little stray, not chipped or spayed who was living under a shed. We are keeping her here until after Christmas and then will be rehomed directly through CPL from us. We are making sure she isn't pregnant and getting her neutered.

CrochetBelle · 16/11/2017 22:51

As long as there are idiots like that, situations like this are only going to get worse Sad

Angry Angry Angry

Responsible breeders are those that mate dogs for their temperament and general characteristics and have acquired a vetted waiting list of possible clients.

Once it's known how many pups are there, some way of the clients buying/funding the puppies before their handed over at a safe age can be worked out.

Once they're old enough to be spayed and neutered, the puppies can be sent to their (hopefully) forever homes.

If the clients live close enough, they might be able to help look after them and start to train them.

Obviously, this can't happen if they live miles away, but the breeder and clients must meet, vetting the clients should be the responsibility of the breeder.

Wolfiefan · 16/11/2017 23:34

But my pup can't be spayed until at least two! And her breeder lives over 3 hours away. I need to have her here. Train her and bond with her and settle her into the house. I can't (don't want to anyway) breed from her as she's endorsed so any pups wouldn't be KC reg.
And many people who show dogs don't spay anyway.

Gingernaut · 16/11/2017 23:37

Obviously, in my draconian world, there's room for a little common sense and compassion. Grin

Special breeds can be exempt, but licensing and vet checks will be carefully monitored with a view to removing both dog and licence should the checks throw up anything wrong.
