To never buy broccoli again after reading Ocado reviews?

SabineDeux · 15/11/2017 15:35

I feel sick. Was just looking for best broccoli on Ocado and wondered why they are all low rated in the reviews. Most of the comments say the broccoli is full of worms and slugs!!!!!!! 🤢Can this be true? Have I been merrily eating worms all this time? I don't think I'll ever buy broccoli again. Grossed out.

Anyone is BU for eating broccoli. Awful stuff.

FutureFairyCrayon · 15/11/2017 15:40

YABU. You do know that broccoli grows in the ground, yes? It's just a bit of extra protein, but if it bothers you that much then make sure you wash it carefully.

winefortea · 15/11/2017 15:41

Bit of extra protein never hurt anyone! Grin

MohoBoho · 15/11/2017 15:43

I grow broccoli on my allotment and it always comes with added protein! Wash well ...

SpottedGingham · 15/11/2017 15:43

Never found half a maggot in an apple? Wink

The thousands of people who didn’t get extras just didn’t leave a review.

peaceloveandbiscuits · 15/11/2017 15:45

I have literally never found beasts in broccoli. Where would they hide?!

queenofcheese5 · 15/11/2017 15:46

Only annoyed people write reviews. It’s probably fine

Exokey · 15/11/2017 15:50

Best to avoid all vegetables and fruit if you want to avoid the chance of bugs/slugs occasionally being in them! It's why we wash and prep veg, to make sure nothing has been left behind.

Clandestino · 15/11/2017 15:53

Must be some really posh slugs. Call them Tarquin and Althea and offer some organic salad with chia seeds. I am sure they will obligingly move and set your broccoli free.

PickAChew · 15/11/2017 15:54

It takes a lot of pesticides to keep brassicas free of creepy crawlies.

DiegoMadonna · 15/11/2017 15:55

Welcome to the modern world, where people really have no idea where their food comes from.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 15/11/2017 16:00

A possibility of slugs in your Ocado broccoli is surely worth the trade-off for (potentially) meeting the legendary Jesus In The Cabbage Van, OP. Grin

Isn’t it only to be expected?
Kind of hacked off —deprived— that I’ve never had one now.

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 15/11/2017 16:05

I buy broccoli from ocado every week and I've never had a hitchhiker. Feel like I'm missing out

whiskyowl · 15/11/2017 16:05

I grow broccoli. It actually grows quite a way above the ground. I've never had worms in any of the heads. Slugs do occasionally get in there, but even they mostly prefer the leaves. The florets are quite tightly packed, and you'd notice slugs.

You should wash all veg thoroughly before using it, and that should get rid of any beasties lingering. Good, organic veg will be grown in loads of poo and while you want all the flavour that makes in the plant, you don't want to eat it directly!!

MoosicalDaisy · 15/11/2017 16:06

If bugs are eating it, it means it's good, just wash it.

Seeline · 15/11/2017 16:07

Certain time of year broccoli is home to green caterpillars. They are the exact same green as the broccoli. Wash very carefully !!

ObscuredbyFog · 15/11/2017 16:09

Chop the broc and soak it in salty water or white vinegar water for 10 minutes, rinse well. That should loosen and kill most pests.

CountFosco · 15/11/2017 16:10

I grew up on a farm, our veg really was fresh from the field. We would put cauliflower in salty water to steep for a bit to encourage the slugs to reveal themselves. When I went to Uni and did the same thing my flatmates all thought I was crazy.

AlternativeTentacle · 15/11/2017 16:10

you do know that broccoli grows in the ground, yes?

No. Broccoli is the unopened flower of a plant and it grows about 2 feet off the ground. There will be no worms in it, although there are likely to be caterpillars and woodlice, and often there will be aphids, and fleabeetles, and any number of little chompy and sucky beasts.

Butteredparsn1ps · 15/11/2017 16:11

How little must some people have going on in their lives that they feel a need to write a review of Brocolli?

How does that stuff get to the top of anyones to do list?

squishysquirmy · 15/11/2017 16:11

tbh, the very occasional beasty is probably much better for you than the pesticides used to keep veg unnaturally bug free. Just wash well before eating.
