To never buy broccoli again after reading Ocado reviews?

SabineDeux · 15/11/2017 15:35

I feel sick. Was just looking for best broccoli on Ocado and wondered why they are all low rated in the reviews. Most of the comments say the broccoli is full of worms and slugs!!!!!!! 🤢Can this be true? Have I been merrily eating worms all this time? I don't think I'll ever buy broccoli again. Grossed out.

Could try frozen broccoli - I've never found anything exciting in that.

JustHope · 16/11/2017 20:33

I’ve found a creepy caterpillar 🐛 in Broccoli but can’t remember whether it was Ocado or not. It survived being cooked which freaked me out and I haven’t eaten it since.

Reminds me off an old friend who wouldn’t grow veg in her garden in case animals went to the toilet in the area. She was horrified when I pointed out the cats using the farmers potato field next to her house as a giant litter tray Grin

I think broccoli used to be non-kosher in the Netherlands, exactly because of the insects, which of course are not allowed in the Jewish diet. I think there’s a different chief rabbi now though, who might permit broccoli consumption.

About the salt bath. I assume this actually gets rid of them? Otherwise aren’t you just pre-annihilating them before consuming?

I know exactly what you're going through! ugh! I found little white worms in an organic broccolli (I know it's natural and all but I don't want to dine out on beasties) - I loved broccolli and it put me off for a while...I buy frozen now, not as nice as fresh but it is 100% plant Grin

simonisnotme · 16/11/2017 20:47

buy frozen veg, keeps for ages ,no bugs no waste

Lovemusic33 · 16/11/2017 20:47

Who reads reviews for broccoli ? Hmm

OldWitch00 · 16/11/2017 20:55

I remember broccoli caterpillars from my youth...fat and broccoli green in color...
On a good note surely it means the veg isn’t totally saturated in pesticides

mellicauli · 16/11/2017 20:59

There's an old German saying: better a slug in the cabbage than no meat at all..

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 16/11/2017 21:01

Wash it Hmm

TheWhyteRoseShallRiseAgain · 16/11/2017 21:01

It's the invasion of the diamond back moth. Hasn't been around these shores for years then decides to come back with a vengeance. Particularly likes broccoli and sprouts. Also been a sluggy couple of years, hopefully they will all bug- ger off again

We grewbroccoli when I was a child, and it always had to be very thoroughly washed to get the creepy crawlies out. A slug was fine, it would be dead from the boiling, and of course, most of those sort of things would float to the top and be esily removed.

What you didn’t want, and occasionally happened, was to find half a caterpillar in your lunch Grin

PumpkinSquash · 16/11/2017 21:11

Oh, meh. Who cares?! So what if it's got any insects or whatever in?! That's what the washing of vegetables is for! Have we seriously got that used to chemicals/plastic wrapping etc that we're losing sight of where food originally comes from?

limitedperiodonly · 16/11/2017 21:12

The last time I found wildlife on my fruit and veg was more than 20 years ago when something had glued itself in a cocoon between two basil leaves. It was dead. I was more fascinated than revolted. The basil was from Israel - I like to imagine some exotic butterfly from the Holy Land Smile.

Things are really clean now. I don't mean the pre-prepared stuff, I mean the regular stuff. I was used to buying potatoes where a good part of the price was mud and leeks were full of grit. No more. I wonder what they do at the farm.

CakeNinja · 16/11/2017 21:14

You read a broccoli review?!
People LEAVE reviews for broccoli??
I’ve been having broccoli delivered by ocado every week for years, never once have I found a creepy critter.
Mil often drops us off produce from her allotment, that’s a different story - bugs galore! Did once find a curled up caterpillar in the bottom of the cooked broccoli 😂

limitedperiodonly · 16/11/2017 21:22

Salt bath, yes. We'd go blackberrying and my mum would always do that and we'd see the tiny little maggots rise. My dad had a fearsome machete that someone who'd served with the Chindits in the Burma campaign in WWII brought back as a souvenir. He'd hack a path in the brambles and we'd go into the heart of the bush where the choicest, dog piss-free berries were Smile

PumpkinSquash · 16/11/2017 21:26

We're hardcore here. We give them a good rinse when we get home but that's your lot. Bit of protein, live dangerously and all that Grin
10 year old may or may not eat one or two straight off the bushes too

MiddlingMum · 16/11/2017 21:27

I find it odd that people will eat cows and pigs, but get their knickers in a twist about a caterpillar.

MsHarry · 16/11/2017 21:38

As with lettuce or any other ground grown veg, you need to wash and prepare it. You would have noticed a worm.

MsHarry · 16/11/2017 21:38

cakeninja I was just thinking that!

Sadmum987 · 16/11/2017 21:40

Ah now actually I once was chopping broccoli for dinner and something made me look closer. It was crawling with little grub things, like alive with them.
I don't handle that kind of insect well at all and was horrified!

underneaththeash · 16/11/2017 21:43

I've bought broccoli at least weekly for the last 10 years on Ocado and I have never, ever had a caterpillar or a slug on it.

underneaththeash · 16/11/2017 21:45

I'm now thinking how much broccoli I have bought from ocado and it's really annoying DH.....probably 500 bits of broccoli.

Skittlesandbeer · 16/11/2017 21:45

OMG I wish I had the kind of week that I could get het up about broccoli!

That said, I could maybe manage a quick 15 minutes around 4am for getting riled about how much chemical spray is used on veggies...
