I know it’s outside but it could come in couldn’t it?

OP posts:
KyloRensLightsaber · 15/11/2017 10:22

I’ve got two false widows living in my bathroom window frames. I don’t mind watching them through the the window but I do have to open it because of condensation Confused

I’m hoping karma will help and because I’ve not tried to kill them they won’t come in...

KyloRensLightsaber · 15/11/2017 10:24

daily I’ve noticed that with my false widows too. Very unscuttly. One fell down when I opened the window one day and just curled into a tiny ball until I encouraged him (was quite small so assume male!) back out of the window.

Hoppinggreen · 15/11/2017 10:26

We have a " you kill it you eat it" rule in our house
Just saying

KyloRensLightsaber · 15/11/2017 10:29

Purple that is fascinatingly big! I would prefer it wasn’t near me though...

KyloRensLightsaber · 15/11/2017 10:30

Love it Hopping!

WineAndTiramisu · 15/11/2017 10:30

Seriously, people actually want a "trigger warning" on this post...?!

But in your shoes, I'd have put it through next doors letterbox, then it would be nice and comfy and not come back Grin

FretYeNot · 15/11/2017 10:38

GladAllOver how can you tell all that about the spider from a small picture? That he's male and had his last shedding? That's fascinating.

jimijack · 15/11/2017 10:40

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH
fucking jaysus fucking christ....are you still in the house???????

GladAllOver · 15/11/2017 11:06

GladAllOver how can you tell all that about the spider from a small picture? That he's male and had his last shedding? That's fascinating.
Male spiders only become sexually mature after their last shedding. Then they develop the much more prominent 'pedipalps' with the enlargement at the end that they use to transfer sperm to the female during mating.
That picture of the tegenaria is not terribly clear, but it looks to me that it has the enlarged palps. Perhaps the OP could post a closer picture?

Rebeccaslicker · 15/11/2017 11:07

Fucking hell OP. YABU if you didn't torch the place. It might have a mate and babies. Shudder!!!

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 15/11/2017 11:30

They eat those shit-stomping bastard blue bottles. They're fine by me. (my cat thinks they are yummy)

LakieLady · 15/11/2017 11:38

Omg! Which part of the country do you live in OP? If it's South East that's too close for comfort and I'm moving too

I'm in the south-east and we've had 2 like that (well, we think there were two - it could have been the same one going upstairs and coming down again). Not seen them/it for around 2 weeks now, and I quite miss them.

We actually gave them names (Dora was the upstairs one and Kevin was the downstairs one).

How do you know they are 'false widows'?

KurriKurri · 15/11/2017 12:22

That is a house spider - please don't kill it, it isn't doing any harm, it is in your garden (along with probably hundereds of ohter spiders.)

A false widow is quite a small spider, and the 'skull' pattern on it's abdomen quite distinctive. That spider is much too big and has clear house spider markings.

KyloRensLightsaber · 15/11/2017 13:15

Hi Glad I say they are false widows, I do assume Smile They are fairly small with the markings on their backs, and the orangey legs.

I watched one of them catch a wasp in their web and then take it into the hole bit in the window frame, it was fascinating. After that I had a look online to see what sort of spider they were and they look exactly like the false widows pictures. Wish I’d taken a photo now!

GladAllOver · 15/11/2017 15:47

There are many small round spiders that look like that. The theridid family which includes the steatodas is widespread and very common. The markings do vary and can be indistinct.
Just working on the probabilities, the chances are that it is one of the very much more common species.
I've studied spiders for years and most times when I think I've found a nobilis it has turned out on close examination to be one of the others.
I've not been bitten by a nobilis yet although I've handled them. I have been bitten by one of its close relatives, the steatoda bipunctata. That served me right for disturbing its web! It was just a tiny prick with no swelling or discomfort.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE PLEASE BE SOMEWHERE FAR AWAY

KyloRensLightsaber · 15/11/2017 15:53

Thanks Glad! They fascinate me. Hope they show themselves again so I can try to check what they are.

KyloRensLightsaber · 15/11/2017 15:53

Moist Grin

KyloRensLightsaber · 15/11/2017 15:55

It’s interesting Glad from that info they are in a hole under a window sill and the shape of the web described was one of the things that made me think they were false widows, it’s doesn’t look the same as the other ones, more scaffoldy.

BertrandRussell · 15/11/2017 16:04

I would be interested in people's reactions if a whole lot of men reacted like this to a picture of a spider!

GladAllOver · 15/11/2017 16:10

Bertrand I can assure you that spider phobia affects men as well as women, but they probably feel it would be 'unmanly' to admit it and get it sorted.
On the other hand I suspect there are women who might not have a phobia but just think they 'ought' to be frightened of spiders. Silly really - it doesn't make them any more feminine.

GladAllOver · 15/11/2017 16:13

Kylo Try and get a closeup picture. :)
Yes many spiders will take wasps. As well as all the genuinely harmful insects that we don't want in our houses.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 15/11/2017 16:15

Awwww.
The poor thing just wants some sexy time with a nice female spider before he dies!

Let him in, let him find a mate, then he'll die anyway.

They don't like being out in the cold poor babies.

As an aside......the ridiculous panic over a tiny creature who keeps our homes relatively bug free really pisses me off.
