Would you let your six year old have an eye test with a smear person whilst you were in different room also having an eye test?

As the title says, would you?

So, did something bad happen during the exam?

GabsAlot · 14/11/2017 19:00

whats th gender got to do with it

bingolittle · 14/11/2017 19:02

My optician won't do this, even with an older kid (11) (I tried!)

Ecureuil · 14/11/2017 19:04

Yes I would.

MammaTJ · 14/11/2017 19:05

DD2, I would not have done, as her behaviour at that age can best be described as feral. DS I would not have done as he has something quite wrong with his eyes, that has needed three operations and I have never not been in on an eye test with him. DD1, no problems with her eyes of note, behaved well, yes, I would have been happy to do this.

neveradullmoment99 · 14/11/2017 19:17

No. My dd wouldn't like it. I still go in with my dd who is 10.

Tipsytopsyturvy · 14/11/2017 19:19

I have no idea what you are talking about op.
Do you mean a nurse who does the smears doing an eye test while you are in another room?

Evelynismyspyname · 14/11/2017 19:20

There is another adult present - at the dentist there's always the assistant / dental nurse taking down the notes - that's universal for kids and adults, I've never been to a dentist where it isn't the case.

Pennywhistle · 14/11/2017 19:21

Tipsy read the thread the OP clarifies.

I would have thought that by 6 a child can happily sit and have an eye test, I mean, you don't usually go to school with your 6 yr old and sit in class with them seeing what they do.

Kids are way too smothered these days, give em some space! We all moan when our teens do nowt for themselves, but we can't let our 6 yr olds have an eye test for 5 minutes?? x :-) Let 'em do things on their own! :-)

MyKingdomForBrie · 14/11/2017 19:22

Of course. He was in the next room not a different shop!

Bowerbird5 · 14/11/2017 19:23

What were you worried about? They will have had DBS check.

megletthesecond · 14/11/2017 19:24

No.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 14/11/2017 19:27

No, because my kids get shy and don't answer questions well.

GilligansKitchenIsland · 14/11/2017 19:45

I wouldn't, but only because I had a bad experience as 12yo with an optician getting a bit pervy in the dark. Nothing illegal, just inappropriate comments about my appearance, perfume etc. He was the opposite sex from me, but it just highlighted how vulnerable you are as a child with an adult getting that close and personal in a confined, dark space.

Ttbb · 14/11/2017 19:48

No. Why can't you go one after the other?

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 14/11/2017 22:16

I'm very very surprised they did this, I work with lots of optoms and don't know anyone who would test without another adult in the room.

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 14/11/2017 22:20

It's nothing to do with that, it's all about adults being covered if anything happens.

TeenTimesTwo · 14/11/2017 22:25

No I wouldn't, because I would wish to be present to answer questions on medical history, and to generally reassure my 6yo. In the same way I would be present at the doctors, OT, or dentist check up.

Nothing to do with child protection, all to do with passing on accurate information, and child reassurance.

scrabbler3 · 14/11/2017 22:27

I'm quite lax/lenient but my 14.5 year old hasn't been to the dentist or optician alone yet. Not because I don't trust him but because I thought they had to be accompanied until they were 16? You learn something new every day on here! Next time I'll sit in Costa whilst he gets on with it.

flowery · 14/11/2017 22:32

At 6? No, not at all, although the sex of the person doing the test would be irrelevant.

If my 10 yo wanted to go in alone with me sat outside, I’d probably let him.

Canyousewcushions · 14/11/2017 22:33

My 5 year old had (most of) a test by herself becuase I couldnt keep her younger sibling quiet and still in the room. I didnt leave the premises though, and the optician gave me a run down of the results at the end. However this was just a standard pre school check and she hadn't show any issues before hand- I might feel differently if she had known eye problems and i wanted to know how thing were going. She's also not one for messing about so i could trust her to behave. Not sure I'd have sent her in while i had my own appointment though- I'd rather have been available in case she panicked and needed to know i was still around.

lou1221 · 14/11/2017 22:34

You may find that you have to accompany your child anyway. A few months ago, my 13 year old had an eye test at Specsavers, and the optition said I needed to be in the room. When you think about, they need to safeguard themselves, same sex or not.

arethereanyleftatall · 14/11/2017 22:36

I'm assuming you mean in case the optician is a peodophile? For that, I'd be fine, I don't want to live my life assuming everyone's a paeodophile. What about at school?
But, I wouldn't let my 6 yr old go in alone. Because she wants to wear glasses so might fail on purpose. So, no, to check she behaves.

pinkhorse · 14/11/2017 22:37

My ds 7 had an eye test last week with a lady without me in the room. I never had one thought about it being an issue Confused
