to be annoyed by being paid for work via a pocketmoney card?

Just want to see if I am being unreasonable here.

I've picked up a job as a Christmas Temp at Tesco this Winter, gave in my bank details as requested for being paid as per the letter contract.

However, in the post today, I've received a Tuxedo prepay card. Yes kids, the same thing you'd give your teenager. I will be paid through this pre-loaded card to save Tesco on their administrative fees.

Infantilising at best I know, however I could suck it up were it not for the fact that it will cost me money to use for bills, direct debits etc. etc. I know I can use it in the shops, but I feel like it's an extra burden on those of us who are picking up extra hours working in a shop. You know, just to pay bills.

What do you think? Has anyone else had this experience?

And for the record, no, the pocketmoney card was not mentioned at all in any of the recruitment gumpf, contract or anywhere outside a Google search which has yielded that Tesco are using it for their temp staff.

Well done to everyone involved - my daughter will wait for her letter and see what it says. I am amazed (or maybe not) by the lazy reporting displayed by the Metro and The Mirror - I know journalists use sites like Mumsnet for stories but was surprised that they lift from The Telegraph (and leave out vital information).
I'm still on a 'one woman' boycott of Tesco though - it makes me feel better even if it's very unlikely to affect their profits!

Fascinating thread.

I am not shocked at Tesco and their flaky practices.

What I can see, apologies if someone has covered this upthread, is the issues Tesco has as a data controller on personAl information. They have opened accounts without permission of account holders. Given addresses, date of birth etc.

Handy piece of legislation that is very service-user friendly. Data Protection Act. Sounds like a huge data leak to me thus breaching one of the 7 principles of the DPA.

And does one of these pre-paid cards end up on a credit file?

It is endless.

Ds2 actually starts tomorrow, so be sure I shall be all over this like a rash if there is the slightest suggestion of a card instead of BACS!

Thanks all!

Great result, OP. Big companies try very hard to ignore the little people but they're clearly riled.

great thread

A letter has arrived from Tesco today - won't find out what it's about until this evening.

hamptonhangingpork · 01/12/2017 14:24

I got one the other day - it was pension scheme information. It was just on a side of A4. And unnecessary as I haven't been back for a while.

Hopefully it will be the same letter and nothing to worry about.

At induction they were all asked if they had bank account and had given their details because other methods of wages payment were available

No one asked what they were, and every one had given their bank details so looks like it could still be an option, but our store would not appear to be pushing it.

Just thought to update the thread. I am a seasonal worker and was paid into my bank account which I am very grateful for but I can honestly say hand on heart once my contract expires I will be running through the doors and never return. They have been the worst company I have had the displeasure of working for.

I have also discovered what a bunch of utter wankers the general public can be Grin
