to be annoyed by being paid for work via a pocketmoney card?

Just want to see if I am being unreasonable here.

I've picked up a job as a Christmas Temp at Tesco this Winter, gave in my bank details as requested for being paid as per the letter contract.

However, in the post today, I've received a Tuxedo prepay card. Yes kids, the same thing you'd give your teenager. I will be paid through this pre-loaded card to save Tesco on their administrative fees.

Infantilising at best I know, however I could suck it up were it not for the fact that it will cost me money to use for bills, direct debits etc. etc. I know I can use it in the shops, but I feel like it's an extra burden on those of us who are picking up extra hours working in a shop. You know, just to pay bills.

What do you think? Has anyone else had this experience?

And for the record, no, the pocketmoney card was not mentioned at all in any of the recruitment gumpf, contract or anywhere outside a Google search which has yielded that Tesco are using it for their temp staff.

I've sent a tweet to Tesco - I may get a reply (but can guess what it'll be).
Has anyone had a reply from Moneybox (apart from the general tweet for information) or Martin Lewis or other organisations?
My daughter was at college all day yesterday so hasn't asked her HR why she's received a card - will keep this thread updated (and Nat at Organise).

hamptonhangingpork · 18/11/2017 10:29

Hi everyone,

I took the advice of a pp and called Tuxedo to cancel my card as it was received within the 14 days cooling off period as per Tuxedo' terms and conditions.

They said they couldn't cancel it, only Tesco could.

Exactly I predicted. Their contract is with Tesco. Tesco own that card and account and you are only permitted to use it.

Shocking and totally unacceptable.

hamptonhangingpork · 18/11/2017 10:49

One a couple of things in honour of this bureaucratic nightmare:

  1. Yay! I checked and was paid into my main bank account yesterday. After being told "no" by the payroll department, this is a pleasant surprise.

Even if I can't cancel the stupid card.

  1. I got my first junkmail for payday / high interest lenders. I wonder if my information has now been sold to companies such as lendable.co.uk who offer loans with the attractive interest rates of 45%.

  2. I've had a quick look at the contract or "information sheet" I was given. It doesn't say private and confidential so I assume that considering the extensive legal thought Tesco put into the crafting of the same, it is neither.

So in the spirit of bureaucracy and wanting information to be free to all. Please see attached.

I know my last day hasn't passed as yet, but Tesco shouldn't have anything contained therein that they wouldn't be happy for someone to show others. Particularly if they themselves or their children are joining.

All the best, Star

If Tuxedo's contract is with Tesco then they will be responsible for the monthly charge and cancellation fee then. I've had no response to my e mail from Tuxedo Customer Services about this.
I'll get my daughter to check her bank account to see how she was paid yesterday.

PerkingFaintly · 18/11/2017 15:16

Really pleased to hear you've now been paid properly, hampton!

THE COBDEN CENTRE ORGANISES FIRST DIGITAL CURRENCIES CONFERENCE IN ANY PARLIAMENT WORLDWIDE
www.cobdencentre.org/2016/04/the-cobden-centre-organises-first-digital-currencies-conference-in-any-parliament-worldwide/

Cobden Centre co-founder Steve Baker MP commented “At a time when the destructive effects of worldwide, sustained, extraordinary if not emergency monetary policy are becoming evident, this conference on virtual currencies and the blockchain could not be more timely. Market societies need free-market money and at last, as Hayek foresaw in the 1970s, technology is enabling that essential development.”

This was in 2016. I can't quite unpack all the meanings in that. But I have a feeling the (fairly new) Cobden Centre may be something to keep a beady eye on.

PerkingFaintly · 18/11/2017 16:41

(By meanings, I don't mean grammar. I mean, who exactly are these folks, who are their friends, what's the big picture of what they're after, and who's paying for it.)

HelenaDove · 18/11/2017 17:03

You cant cancel it? Fucking outrageous!!!

AllHailTheSunDog · 18/11/2017 17:48

Is it possible to check the balance on the card? I remember being warned off prepaid cards for holiday use as it's not possible to transfer any small residual amounts back off the card without charge, so that money is "lost".

HelenaDove · 18/11/2017 20:58

bump.

nannynick · 18/11/2017 22:08

Great to hear you have now been paid direct to bank. Odd that you can’t cancel the card - maybe your store manager will ask for it back, after all it does not belong to.

HelenaDove · 19/11/2017 20:38

.

Butterymuffin · 19/11/2017 23:47

How interesting that after you made a fuss, they found they were able to make payment using your given bank details after all!

safariboot · 20/11/2017 00:14

Something that I don't think has been mentioned yet and is potentially a major problem. From the grey-on-grey small print on Tuxedo's website,

The Prepaid Card is an electronic money product regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, it is not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme

In other words, If Tuxedo goes bankrupt you lose your money.

In my view, unacceptable that Tesco are using this system that puts employees at risk, just to save a few pennies themselves.

thinkfast · 20/11/2017 10:13

If it were me, I would be emailing both Tesco and tuxedo requiring cancellation of the card and confirmation that your personal data hasn’t been transferred elsewhere. I would include in the letter confirmation that you did not consent to the card or to your data being given to tuxedo in the first place. I’d cc the FCA and the DPO

GerrytheBerry · 20/11/2017 10:15

To be honest it doesn't surprise me coming from Tesco!
Absolutely rubbish

Auspiciouspanda · 20/11/2017 10:23

This is the tweet I got back, absolute liars.

Maybe remind them of the upcoming 25/5/2018 GDPR requirements ?

The title of this thread is the most understated AIBU I have ever read. Unbelievable. Glad you’ve had useful advice from MN, OP.

Iwantacampervan · 20/11/2017 12:15

No reply here from Tesco or Tuxedo - will retweet !

PerkingFaintly · 20/11/2017 12:31

Yeah, safariboot, I noticed that about Tuxedo not being covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme too...

hamptonhangingpork · 20/11/2017 12:59

Tuxedo's set up reminds me of that Christmas savings club. Was it Park?

What's the betting the funds contained within the eaccounts are not ringfenced either so if a company were to swoop in, would they be able to access / drain the funds or use them as leverage for their own debts?

I honestly think the answers to these questions and those of pp should be made available. I love the question about would the card incur a charge for paying a Mastercard bill (I bet it does).

I'm officially out of Tesco's tyranny now, quite happy about that. I've gotten a few missed calls from a withheld number this weekend which is probably them. They can leave a message / send a letter if they wish. It isn't entirely me being passive aggressive, just now that I'm getting payday loans junkmail I don't fancy dealing with coldcallers either.
